Sequence of Events
• Fall 2006 - Sault Area Hospital encounters serious C. difficile outbreak
• Hospital spends several million dollars on enhanced cleaning efforts with little improvement
• Investigation of 26 patient cases revealed that C. diff caused or contributed to the death of 18 patients
• January 2007 – Algoma Public Health (APH) asks CGC for assistance in mapping
• Jan – Feb 2007 – CGC captures 3D digital GIS layout of General and part of Plummer Hospitals
• CGC develops C. difficile database tracking application
• Feb-April 2007 – APH enters hospital form data into the C. difficile database application
• March 2007 – CGC begins analysis of spatial relationships and queries

– Were there “hot” rooms?
– Were patients leaving the hospital with C. diff?
– Were patients admitted to the hospital with C. diff?
– Was practice following policy? For example, were patients being moved with their beds?
– What were the patterns of patient movement and was this a factor?
– Was there excessive patient movement?
– Was patient movement and isolation efficient and effective?
