    Tom Billings and beyondveg.com

Tom Billings is a principal author of beyondveg.com, a website that purports to provide "Reports fr

terans of vegetarian and raw-food diets, veganism, fruitarianism, and instinctive eating, plus new

ence from paleolithic diet research and clinical nutrition.", in addition to exposing dangerous and fa

iefs and practices in the raw-food and/or vegetarian/vegan community.

f only that were true! the site is an excellent study of the dangerous, false, misology of thenscientist who, having no significant understanding of biochemistry or general science, uses scientif

unding words and misinterpretations of scientific data to support false conceptual paradigms.

ince nutrition can be investigated only by the scientific tool called biochemistry, discussions of d

at totally ignore chemistry and focus on other irrelevant information, such as cultural belief or

adition, is clearly meaningless. That is nutribabble, and this page will lead to analyses of the

    tribabble presented on beyondveg.com.

    #n a set of pages titled $ietary %roblems in the Real &orld , "Bios of vegetarians, ex-vegetarians,

hers in search of health, not dogma..." , Billings and others candidly discuss their personal dietary

lures! so let's ta(e a loo( at these revelations.

    Tom Billings: dietary failures

Tom Billings, )TB* a principle author of beyondveg.com, who by-the-way stole that title from one o

ticles without permission several years ago, has a rather interesting cyclic history of personal

    ailures".

He failed at fruitarianism, so he concludes that fruitarianism can not wor(.

He failed at a raw diet, so he concludes that raw diets can not wor(.He conveniently ignores the inescapable fact that our species, as did every one of countless hundr

millions of species of +ife on this planet, evolved on a totally raw diet.

He failed at a vegan diet, so he concludes that vegan diets can not wor(.

The beyondveg website also advocates the human consumption of raw flesh by presenting a long

position of pseudoscience about the "%aleo $iet".

TB also uniformly fails to consider the quality issue -- that modern produce is highly deficient in

nerals and essential nutrients as a result of contemporary, chemical/petrochemical-based,

tant-monoculture, mega-agriculture.  e ignores the fact that our closest genetic relative, the

mp, in addition to eating fruit as the preferred food, also includes leaves and nuts/seeds in its diet

d the strong possibility that these may supply some nutrients missing or limited in fruits. e ignore

e fact that commercial fruits and vegetables simply do not exist in ature, and that they have bee

netically-manipulated for hundreds, to thousands mango, of years to support economic, certainly n

tritional goals. e ignores the obvious fact that humans are Tropical apes and should not be living i

mperatures less than the mid 01's2 and the thermal stress that this creates.

e conveniently redefines common words3 "2ruitarianism" being "456 or more by weight raw frui

e presents several web pages titled $ietary %roblems in the Real &orld   which purport to be "Bio

vegetarians, ex-vegetarians, and others in search of health, not dogma..."

n summary, these biographies provide excellent insight on how not to approach any raw diet,

pecially fruitarianism, the common causes of these "failures" being3

ignorance of chemistry/biochemistry, thus totally ignoring the chemistry involved in proper diet,

ignoring the 7uantity of nutrients eaten,

ignoring the 7uality of nutrients eaten,

    ignoring serious signs of malnutrition,

ignorance of the dynamics of dietary change,

not understanding that ego reduction is necessary to support any ma8or change in diet,

not trying to determine the causes! of specific symptoms of malnutrition and thenremoving the cause by intelligently ad8usting the diet to correct nutritional deficiencies,

and, in direct contradiction to the alleged "search of health, not dogma...", ta(ing a rigid,

gmatic, misologic approach to diet based on mindless faith and copying some incompetent's advice o

etary system, as contrasted to an intelligent approach to diet in an experimental/experiential mode

e method of which being to dynamically tune the diet for optimum health.

The following criti7ue follows the structure of the web pages, starting with Tom Billings, principal

lure. ote3 text in default font are direct 7uotes from the referenced web page.

    troduction

TB: I am a long-time raw-food vegetarian, and have (at different times) followed many of the common raw vegeta

ts: fruitarian, natural hygiene-style, living foods. My current diet is lacto-vegetarian (includes some raw dairy), !-w.

TB: My a%%roach to raw foods is one of realism, moderation, common sense, sanity, honesty, and staying o%en to n

TB: &nce you actively thin' for yourself on these issues, you will egin to realie that the extremists want to sell y

m%listic, logically invalid %hiloso%hy, a %hiloso%hy that is ased on a false model of nature.

;uriously, TB fre7uently manifests a pro8ection of his own failures on others! his own overly simpli

gical, and false concepts regarding ature and human diet will be revealed and analy9ed in this

    ti7ue.

TB: My other interests include ... *yurveda, the traditional medical+wellness system of India.

ere is the first insight into TB's conspicuously illogical, anti-scientific belief system.

TB: I included lentil s%routs in my diet for some months--until the end of 8" (or so). 1ven when eating s%routs, t was still !@$ raw fruit over the longer-term. My weight returned to what was 5normal5 during the %eriod: around

This weight would be about average for a healthy raw-fooder, certainly more healthy than when h

    s E4 pounds lighter.

TB: %routs seemed to hel% me, ut they cannot com%are in taste to fresh, never-shi%%ed mangos (the mangos inermar'ets are a %oor imitation of fresh mangos).

?gain the 7uality issue. prouted seeds are certainly not a natural food item for our species! the

n be a useful tric(, perhaps, but the reason they do not taste good is that there are toxins and ant

trients in seeds that prevent animals from eating or digesting them, or they have other chemical

otection from the animal world. imilarly, most leaves are repulsive, and fruit is generally the only

asant-tasting food. The body of the plant, including roots, stal(s leaves and the important

productive seeds, generally have toxic chemical protection that supports the survival of the plant

ecies. 2ruit is the only plant part that is 'intentionally' put our there for animal food, this in exchar the propagation of the seeds, and thus the species, by animals.

?fter claiming lentil sprouts "literally saved my life"...TB: *fter my ody weight normalied, I slowly reduced the amount of s%routs in my diet, and they were eaten onlely during the remaining years of this %eriod (i.e., 8";-8"> o, he had recovered from this "crash" and next he dives bac( into the obviously failed

#nce again, referring to diet with theatrical concepts li(e "honeymoon", "holy grail", "goal", and

chieve" emphasi9e TB's approach to diet is that of rigidly following totally irrational dogma, based o

oundless emotions and mythical 7uests, and now even yielding his health to a dogma that he had

rsonally experienced to be impossible to "achieve" and life-threatening under his circumstances of ality fruit: There is clearly no intellect involved, here.

TB: I was on 8##$ raw fruit for around 9 years. I was freuently wea'--followed y %eriods of hy%eractivity--durs %eriod. This is the classic %attern of excess sugar consum%tion: sugar highs, followed y sugar lues--which is wh

ince avocados are essentially fiber-free, they do not stimulate peristalsis and thus tend to move

    e Perils of Physical Purity

TB: &n the fruitarian diet, your sense of smell is shar%ened consideraly. This is true, as any positive changes in the diet will result in some sharpening of the senses as the

ernal "noise" generated by a toxic body is reduced. =ver TB-li(e, he then goes on to denigrate the

vious positive effect of such enhanced awareness. The sense of smell is a protective and survival

chanism both to attract one to proper food, and repulse one from toxic chemicals and people.

TB: Ehen you ste% on a us or train, you gag ecause of the smell of the %eo%le on oard. Fou meet an attractive

son who also seems attracted to you, ut you cannot get near them ecause of the smell.

    ndamental level.

    TB: ravings and hunger increased.

?re these not signals that the same deficiency exists that he had previously created on a poor-7u

    TB: I was a%athetic aout eing 5%ure.5

?gain, TB's approach to diet was #T scientific or rational, but as a mythical 7uest.

TB: I literally urned out from the %owerful osession with food that is reuired to e a 8##$ raw fruitarian.

ere, TB admits that he has turned a simple, natural biological function, eating, into a "powerful

session with food", thus indicating the psychopathology he has personally created surrounding this

mple bodily function! a simple bodily function with which all the other millions of animal species have

solutely no problem. e, again, pro8ects his own personal failures onto others. %eople can also turn

her natural functions, such as sex, into obsessions too.

#ne wonders if this "powerful obsession" would be manifest on a quality fruit diet> ;ertainly, one

t obsessed with food if one is eating so as to be healthy.

    tural "y#iene-$tyle %iet: 1980-1989

    Transition Period &end of 1980 to 198'(

ext, his dietary shifts to ...TB: *fter ending the fruitarian diet, I returned to a conventional coo'ed vegetarian diet. It was lacto-vegetarian, ..e foods that I ate %assed through me and came out the other end loo'ing 6ust li'e they did when I ate them.

This is incomprehensible, as are a lot of his vague musings! does this mean that he did not chew

ything>> #n the other hand, was he so deluded as to thin( that 'normal' digestion on a raw diet wo

oduce the toxic, putrid, homogeneous, odoriferous, constipating fecal mass as experienced by the

at-eater> ?s this putrefaction of excessive, animal protein is not possible on a raw plant-based diee identify of mono-meals will be preserved in the fecal mass! that is3 mangos will produce mango fec

ples will produce apple feces, etc.

TB: This indicated a wea' digestive fire

nteresting -- there is no such thing, digestion is carried out at body temperature by en9ymes, the

no "fire" involved. is repeated attempt at reducing complex biochemical systems to nonsensical

thological fol(lore is another insight in to his total lac( of intellectual functioning or application of

ence! there is no logic in his writing, 8ust flights of imagination and mythology. These nonsensical

ncepts, this one from ?yurveda, are readily accepted as fact by his nonfunctioning intellect.

TB: Ehen one eats mostly fruit, it %asses through the ody uic'ly (without causing gas or readily a%%arent digestet), with, however, little change when it comes out as feces. owever, the lac( of "gas or readily apparent digestive upset" should be understood as a healthy

ocess -- as it should be -- the nutrients are within the cells of the plant material and when food is

operly digested it should leave the remaining cellulose/fiber intact and identifiable as to source.

The only time feces will be significantly different from the "food" is when that "food" is #T

ested properly and then the residues support the proliferation of putrefactive bacteria which

nificantly affect the chemistry/appearance of the feces. 2or example, the toxic amines, foul odor

d hardened, constipating masses of feces in the meat-eater are evidence of putrefaction and

erein, TB exhibits a profound lac( of understanding of digestion.

    turn to )a* &198'-1989(

TB: *fter eing on coo'ed food for a while, I returned to eating raw foods. I still considered myself a fruitarian thnowadays I consider my diet in the %eriod as eing closer to natural hygiene in style.

?gain, the problem of obfuscated terminology3 fruitarianism is fruitarianism! atural ygiene, wit

uit, vegs, and nuts/seeds is very different, chemically. TB &0 mentions the chemistry of "foa 7uantitative way, and never mentions any specific nutrient, so he conveys no meaningful informati

is emphasi9es the fact that popular nutribabble, which also ignores both specific nutrients and

antities of them, is totally meaningless.

TB: I would alternate--months on raw, then months on coo'ed, then ac' to raw, and so on.

Thus, no meaningful information can be drawn from such yo-yo dieting, as the body never gets clos

e7uilibrium state on any one diet.

TB: ... one could say that idealism had a strong gri% on me, s%ecifically the sim%listic, yet seductive (and false) idet fruit is the %erfect food, and will guarantee %erfect health.

This emphasi9es a continuing obsession with dogma and false concepts, rather than an ability to lea

om personal experience! this is a prevalent theme throughout TB's writings. There is a difference

tween "idealism" and delusion, apparently lost on TB. ?gain, there is no indication of a functioning

    ellect.

TB: I would go on raw to enhance my health, then go off it when cravings ecame a %rolem. (My %rimary %rolem

en raw in this %eriod, was cravings.)

ow he is saying that raw food enhanced his health, and coo(ed food reduced cravings but the he
