It’s that time of year again... long lines on campus, heavier traffic, lost freshmen asking for directions up and down University Avenue. e Summer B semester has begun at the University of Florida, and that means that the Catholic Gators are back in action. e Newman Club and Catholic Student Fellowship meet weekly during Summer B, and Nueva Alianza and the Catholic Gator Small Groups will resume in full in the Fall. Newman Club president Lauren Flanagan (UF ‘15) is ready to serve new and returning students alike. “I’m excited for this upcoming year because it’s a chance to welcome new faces into the loving community of St. A’s, and for everyone to grow closer together,” she said. “Newman provides a time for fellowship in a laid- back, welcoming environment. It’s a chance to enjoy a home-cooked meal with the people you love!” In addition to weekly ministries, our fourth annual Summer Party is July 13 at Lake Wauburg. Students and friends will gather at the lake for a barbecue, games, and other outdoor activities, and then head back to St. A’s for the Vigil Mass. Cam- pus Minister Ms. Debby Cherwak explained that she started this tradition three years ago in order to give students who are away for the summer a chance to gather together on the same weekend, and meet new friends. “We chose Summer B so that the incoming freshmen can mix with the new students,” she said. Ms. Debby looks for- ward to the summer party every year. “I love silly things like the bal- loon toss,” she said. “It’s great to embrace the moments of simple fun.” Any alumni in town during Summer B are welcome to stop by! Welcome Home, Catholic Gators!Summer B Activities Kick Off a New School Year at St. A’s
Catholic Gator students and alumni at the 2012 Summer Party.
The Soil and Water Science Department (SWSD) faculty and students use a wide range of analytical and field instrumentation in their research programs. To maximize the use of these analytical instruments, the SWSD established several core laboratories not only to support faculty and students but also to provide analytical services and expertise to our clientele in the State of Florida and elsewhere. This group of Soil and Water Diagnostic Laboratories (located both in Gainesville and select UF-IFAS Research and Education Centers) house state-of-the-art instrumentation for analysis of soil, water, plant, and other environmental samples for plant nutrients and a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. These services are available at a nominal cost to our clientele. Details of costs associated with the services provided by these laboratories can be obtained from the coordinator of each laboratory. A brief description of the core laboratories is presented in this newsletter.

The 14th Annual Soil and Water Science Research Forum is scheduled to be held on September 06 2013, in Gainesville, Florida. The forum is designed to bring together representatives from state and federal agencies as well as private industry, faculty, graduate students, and prospective students interested in soil and water science. The forum will provide an opportunity for all those interested in soil and water science to interact with our students, faculty, and administrators on campus. This year’s theme for the forum is on “Sustainability of Land and Water Resources”. Dr. Linda Lee, Professor and Associate Director, Discovery Park Center for the Environment, Department of Agronomy, Purdue University, is the featured keynote speaker at this year’s forum.
