After our lovely summer (!) what better way to spend those autumnal nights than with some truly great music - and we have a splendid mix for your delectation, along with our programme of classes and workshops.

Our new season has a strong focus on some of the finest women performers from the trad world, with the legend that is Peggy Seeger, a warm return to both Kathryn Tickell and Karine Polwart, and the only Scottish date by Eliza Carthy and her Mum Norma Waterson.

We are so thrilled that we have re-scheduled this performance which had to be cancelled a few years back due to Norma's illness.

A rare foray into theatre, as we welcome two one-man shows from Arches Theatre featuring emerging stars of Scottish theatre, Kieran Hurley and Gary McNair who both received considerable plaudits at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. And we have a talk on Bob Dylan, along with loud music and rare footage from Michael Gray, who is exploring Dylan's influences from the Blues.

ReLoaded Fest is back in October, with a packed line up including headliners Errors and Broken Records.

Interweaving songs, tunes and spoken-word narrative, it leads the audience on a magical, moving, humbling and often hilarious journey through the culture and lore of Kathryn's native North Tyne Valley: the very heartland of her world-renowned prowess on the Northumbrian pipes, and as a fiddler and singer.

The performance includes interviews and recordings with family members and the shepherd musicians from whom she learnt. It marks the latest homecoming in her increasingly illustrious globe-trotting career.

SONG OF RETURNSong of Return join the lineup for the first day of the festival, returning to the Tolbooth after one of their first ever gigs here in 2010. Somewhat of a Scottish supergroup the band is fronted by Craig Grant (formerly of Union of Knives) and Louis Abbot (Admiral Fallow).

ERRORSOur favourite post-electro band from Glasgow are back taking on the mantle of this year's Saturday night headliners at Reloaded Fest. They need no introduction to the Tolbooth, their shows here have always had the crowd dancing and the release of "Have Some Faith In Magic" has gone down just as well, described by Drowned In Sound as "Brilliant".

FATHERSONThis three-piece (sometimes six-piece) band started out life in Kilmarnock and have come a long way since. Reloaded Fest will be their first Tolbooth show but we're looking forward to it with the band fresh off the festival circuit including dates at T in the Park and support slots with Idlewild, Panic! At The Disco, The Automatic and Twin Atlantic.

Take a journey across Europe with Kieran Hurley (winner: Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for BEATS) as he hitches a lift from Glasgow to L'Aquila, Italy in heartfelt theatre show Hitch.

L'Aquila was where the leaders of eight of the world's most powerful countries met on 8th July that year to make decisions on the future of the world at the G-8 summit.

Join Kieran for this warm autobiographical performance about global leaders, compassionate strangers, a young man and his thumb which asks questions about the personal power, and the genuine possibility of change.

What timing! As Dylan's latest release, Tempest, gets rave reviews, we bring you a talk on Dylan by writer Michael Gray aided by loud music and rare footage.

With wit and style, the author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song and Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan uses records and rare film footage to show how hugely Dylan has been inspired by the blues and how much of its poetry has been smuggled inside his own, highly influential writing.

"Michael Gray, the world's foremost Bob Dylanologist, is telling people how it really is... Entertaining with wit and insight, Gray is clearly enjoying himself."

The Consulate General of Japan presents a special concert by four talented young Japanese musicians: Tatsuya Yamauchi and Japan New Romantics.

Playing the violin, cello, shakuhachi (Japanese flute) and piano, the group performs beautiful melodies that conjure images of Japanese landscapes, but they also play ‘Annie Laurie’ and other traditional Scottish songs.

They have a repertoire ranging from world to pop to classical music, appreciated by audiences at many concerts in Japan. In April 2011 they also performed to great acclaim in Edinburgh and Inverness, and we are fortunate they are coming to Scotland again in October.

During this performance, Tatsuya Yamauchi will also play part of the concert on a violin made from a pine tree uprooted in the Tsunami last year - to remember the victims and encourage the survivors.

Where to start...

A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Peggy is considered one of North America's finest folk singers. More than 50 years of concerts,20 solo albums, 100 joint recordings and 200 original songs amongst which are the classic Ballad of Springhill and Gonna be an Engineer.

Daughter of composer Ruth Crawford Seeger, sister of Pete and Mike, partner to Ewan MacColl, who wrote the timeless First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for her.

The MacColl-Seeger work during her 35 years in Britain was prodigious in its scope. They encouraged and set the standard for the burgeoning UK folk revival.

Now resident back in the US, she is still touring, though not quite as extensively. Her performances are full of warmth and humour, laced with a sharpness of perception.

A rare opportunity to see one of themost authoritative voices in American and British Folk.

This melodically and rhythmically exciting collaboration by three of the world’s leading folk musicians was rapturously received on its first British tour in 2010.

Sharing their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures are Aly Bain, Scotland’s supreme traditional style fiddler, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller, and American old time fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player Bruce Molsky.

All three have for many years explored traditional music from a wide range of cultures.

As The Scotsman put it, they 'are not only masters of their respective Shetland, Swedish and old-time US traditions, they're also longtime pals, who have worked together over many years' and as a result their performance shows 'in addition to its exhilarating virtuosity,

and dynamic yet seamless diversity, the extra warmth and zest of patent mutual ease, enjoyment and admiration'.

This is the first time that they have found a space in their crowded schedules to tour here together since their first British tour played to packed audiences.

Don’t miss this musical feast.

Red Note (A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle and Noisy Nights) return to the Tolbooth with The Intoxicating Rose Garden, a new hybrid work which takes Sally Beamish's settings of poems by Hafez, the 14th century Persian mystic, as its starting-point.

Combining music, song, dance and animated image, it explores the longing and separation, as well as the sense of belonging and completeness that are so present in Hafez's poems: elements that somehow conflict with and complement one another in the same moment. Red Note Ensemble will be joined by the multi-faceted dancer/choreographer, Michael Popper, and the outstanding young Iranian setar player Anoosh Jahanshahi, who will perform his own Songs from Hafez in traditional Persian classical style.

Chris Helme served his dues as front man of ‘The Seahorses’ in the late 90’s. The York based singer-songwriter, blessed with one of the remarkable voices of his generation and a sublime song writing talent, is now forging a successful and respected career as a solo musician.

Writing and recording for new release, The Rookery, has seen him delve back to some of his early influences; "I’ve been digging out my old blues records again, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie McGhee, Bukka White and also Billie Holliday and Ray Charles. It sparked a feeling in me and I began to remember what hooked me into playing and singing in the beginning."

Drawing influences from Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even Led Zeppelin, the boys have sold out venues across Scotland with their wild stage presence, transfixing harmonies and captivating performance.

The band released mini-album Sound of the Storm on Communion Records in March 2011 to critical acclaim. Some partnerships just work, even if it takes time. Eight years in the making, the debut album by Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat, Everything's Getting Older, is a special thing, full of gorgeous, jazz-inflected love songs fleshed out with a mixture of spoken word pieces and vocals delivered in Aidan's distinctive rhotic singing voice.

Wells is the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer, leader of the Bill Wells Octet and collaborator with The Pastels, Isobel Campbell, Future Pilot AKA and many more.

Moffat is a man of many projects, whether his solo material released under his full name Aidan John Moffat, his band Aidan Moffat & the Best-Ofs or, in a former life, his experimental work as L Pierre, Lucky Pierre and his long history as one half of iconic Scots duo Arab Strap.

The pair first met back in Moffat’s Arab Strap days in – predictably – a pub, when Aidan and bandmate Malcolm Middleton invited Bill to play piano on their Monday At The Hug & Pint album.

Their album, Everything’s Getting Older, released in 2011 to critical acclaim, won the inaugural Scottish Album of the year award earlier this year.

KARINE POLWARTFri 23 Nov, 8pm£15

With the release of her newest acclaimed album 'Traces' we are so excited to welcome award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart back to the Tolbooth with her two regular touring collaborators, brother Steven Polwart (guitars & vocals) and Fair Islander Inge Thomson (accordion, percussion and vocals). Karine draws from folk music’s long tradition while keeping pace with the ceaselessly changing times. Her talent for crafting unique, enduring melodies, her gift for saying just enough without overstating her case, the range and dynamism of her arrangements, all come together in songs of powerful contemporary relevance.

She also has the purest and most approachable of singing voices, drawing the listener towards her in the same way one might lean towards a late night tale by the fireside.

Her songs deal with humanity in all its many guises: there is tenderness, triumph and sorrow, raised flags of rebellion and independence, flashes of anger at power abused and misused. Perhaps most frequently she deals in spare, unsentimental empathy, often with those who have been dealt the least playable hands in the game of life.

A cracking double bill to celebrate St Andrew's Day.

Halton Quartet comprises the collective talents of two of Scotland’s most adventurous and accomplished duos: Angus Lyon and Ruaridh Campbell along with Wingin’ It: Adam Bulley and Chas Mackenzie.

The four met on board the mv Halton during the 2007 Orkney Folk Festival and have since gone on to make music which is both rich in tradition and boldly forward-looking, with arrangements that expand and develop melodic ideas with imagination, subtlety and brio.

'...this is joyful, sometimes beautifully

melancholic and frequently glorious

melody-making'. The Herald

South Uist's Kathleen MacInnes is one of Scotland's finest Gaelic singers with a unique voice and an ability to breathe dramatic life into her songs. She is joined for this performance of songs from her new CD, Cille Bhride, by singer and multi-instrumentalist Griogair Labhruidh.

Kathleen started as an actress, with a background in Gaelic TV, film and theatre, but since the stunning success of her first album 'Og Mhadainn Shamhraidh' including winning best album at the Scottish trad awards she is now better known for her singing. In 2010 Kathleen's vocals featured in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, with Scott commenting 'a natural, powerful voice... beautiful'.

Griogair was brought up near the village of Gartocharn in a region once steeped in Gaelic traditions. A traditional Gaelic singer who sings in the seann-nòs style of the southern Hebrides and Argyll he is also an accomplished guitarist, piper and composer of both bagpipe music and Gaelic song.

ONLY SCOTTISH DATE!

Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy are simply two of the country's finest exponents of traditional song.

With their rich, distinctive and authentic voices, Norma and Eliza have effortlessly engaged new audiences and admirers across two generations. Between them, mother and daughter have 3 Mercury Prize nominations and have both been presented with BBC Folk Singer of the Year awards (Norma in 2001 and Eliza in 2003), as well as innumerable other accolades.

Touring as a six piece band including Martin Carthy they make an exclusive stop in Scotland at the Tolbooth, a date we are so pleased to re-schedule, as the last sold out gig had to be cancelled when Norma became very ill.

Performing traditional classics as well as some unexpected gems, they bring all these songs to life with their wonderfully versatile and compassionate voices.

The future of jazz in Scotland - and potentially much further afield – lies in the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra. Under the direction of Scotland's most distinguished jazz saxophonist, Tommy Smith, these young musicians play a repertoire ranging from Ellington, Basie, Mingus and Gillespie classics to present day big band tunes.

This year the TSYJO celebrates its tenth anniversary. Bring your family and friends and watch as they bring jazz music alive with an entertaining combination of well-known jazz standards and new pieces. They pay tribute to the true legends of jazz and make their compositions sing with style, personality and expression.

Showcasing endless talent, improvisational skills, exuberance and verve, the TSYJO musicians play with a collective maturity well beyond their years and feature soloists of startling ambition and creativity.

Our ever-popular Christmas Ceilidhs are back! Be sure to book early if you want to take part in this year’s seasonal knees up.

What better way to spend the lead up to Christmas than celebrating the festive season with friends and family in traditional Scottish style?

Even if you have never been to a ceilidh before, our ace band will talk you through the dances and ensure a fun time for all.

Both ceilidhs are open to all, though the afternoon ceilidh is particularly popular with families of all ages.

Expect the usual pre Christmas fun with the ever wonderful Brian McAlpine and his International Ceilidh Collective.

After last year's sold out success, we've got them back to help you keep up the festive fun!

2012 has been busy for the lads, with touring and festivals, building on the achievements of 2011 when they won Best Live Act at the Scottish Trad Awards.

Formed in 2005 on the Isle of Tiree in

Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, the band has developed both in size and sound to create a unique fusion of their traditional music and songs with the urban sounds of rock and funk. With their powerful musicianship and the distinctive voice of singer Alec Dalglish, Skerryvore has gripped audiences across the world from Chicago to Beijing and have been the highlight of many big festivals, home and abroad.

27 October – 15 December Preview Sat 27 October, 7 – 9pmAll welcome.

Artlink Central in collaboration with UZ Arts.

Abrupt Encounters is a new inclusive arts programme developed by a collective of creatively engaged participants with learning disabilities, involving first in a lifetime opportunities and live arts events in public spaces across Central Scotland as part of the Year of Creative Scotland 2012.

The first public manifestation of this work will evolve in The Changing Room in October 2012 as the space becomes an operative base for exploring public spaces at the top of the town in Stirling.

Investigating space, orientation, architecture, material, people and place, The Changing Room will become a site of meetings, encounters and

installations as it becomes inhabited by the participants and the facilitating artists.

Acting as an observatory, the space will continue evolving over the course of the tenancy, documenting the programme, connecting it to other Abrupt Encounters
