Ljfndhurst, a township of nearly 20,060 God-fearing, hard-working residents, is ideally located for resident or business development. Thirty minutes from Times Square, tt, has all the advantages of the rural community. In Lyndhurst land is cheap, rents are lots, people are friendly and potentialities are infinite.

TOW ARD A F U L L E R EDUCATION.. .Just as we teach children to avoid being destroyed by

motorcars if they can, so we should teach them to avoid being destroyed by cruel fanatics*, and to this end we should

to produce in dependence of mind, somewhat skeptical and wholly scientific, and to preserve, as far as possible, the instinctive joy of life that is natural to healthy children. This is the ta.sk of a liberal education: to give a sense of value of things other than domination, to help create wise citizenship with liberty in individual creativeness, to enable man to give to human life that splendor which sfome few have shown that it can achieve.”

Bertrand Russell.

W H A T A LL T H E SHOOTING’S ABOUTOur editorial this week is a reprint from the current Reader's Digest, an article which carries its own moral and

which we humbly submit to the Bland educators from Trenton who think the public debt is an unsolved mathematical problem (educators, by the way, being the funny people who escape payment of income taxes and say that the property tax, which they must pay, is exhorbitant and should .be helped by income taxes that other people have to pay).

The article, by Fred C. Kelly, is entitled, “ A City Out o f Debt”. It follows:

“Recently the outgoing head of Kalamazoo** commission government held up a city bond to which his successor touched a match. The ashes were sealed in a test tube to be enshrined as a perpetual reminder that this Michigan city is out of debt and intends to stay that way. Kalamazoo prides itself 011 being the only American city over 50,000which is in that fortunate i>osition, though others are strug- _ ____ ____glint! to emulate its example. "For M pfMWIt distinction, Kalamazoo can thank a small group of civic-minded citizens who, 20 years ago,

It has bought an asphalt plant and i now does it* own street paving. Cheered by the decrease in | debt and the more efficient functioning of their government,!Kalamazoo’s citizens are taking a new interest in their com- j mutrity. This in turn has led a general improvement in public services, notably street cleaning, snow removal, fire and police protection. Street« have been widened, new sewers , laid, the municipal lighting plant and waterworks enlarged.

“ Neighborhood groups now plan their own improvement j projects—carefully weighing the advantages and disadvan-j tages against the probable cost before submitting them to I the city administration for approval. One of the new parks was designed, even to the landscaping, largely bv people living near it.

Kalamazoo’s- treasury even has a surplus. Politicians used to argue that it would never be possible for a city to accumulate a cash reserve, because voters would insist that

"Within the City Hall itself there is increased coopera- .. .. - . . --------lion, since each department now finds greater incentive to j JrT*f Rtt**nhave a little money left over at the end of the year. A M O N G T H O S E P R E S E N TApproximately 13.000 persons, enough to populate a

small city, who would otherw ise have died in auto accidents during 1938, will probably live to welcome the New Year next January thanks, largely, to the. tireleaa efforts of such agencies as the N ational Institute for Traffic Safety, The National Safety Council, The Automotive Safety Foundation, thousands of newspaper editors, and the casualty insurance industry.

The men and women who are directly responsible fo r saving these 13,000 human lives w ill receive little or no recognition fo r th e ir tireless services. Their only solace will be found In dry statistics. They will not even receive the g ra titude they so Justly deserve from those whose very lives they have saved, because providence never labels its victim« in advance.

In the first six months of 1938, highway fatalities decreased 22 per cent compared to I9S7.
