Page 1: Token economy

What is a Token Economy?

o It is a system of generalized learned reinforcers:

o Generalized learned reinforcer: A learned reinforcer that is a reinforcer because it

has been paired with a variety of other reinforcers.

o A token economy is a system in which generalized learned reinforcers can be earned and

exchanged for a variety of backup reinforcers.

o The more practical explanation is: by making correct responses, kids can earn tokens

(points, chips, tickets, etc) that they can exchange for something they want.

o Most token economies at WoodsEdge consist of 5 to 10 tokens and are received

contingent upon appropriate behaviors such as sitting appropriately or responding

independently.
