Loneliest LNG Terminal in U.S. Bucks Pipeline TrendBY NAUREEN S. MALIK, BLOOMBERG NEWS
Engie SA’s LNG import facility near Boston, unlike all its peers, has a new lease on life. It continues to import natural gas even with the U.S. drilling boom because of opposition to construction of a pipleline.
Any proposed route triggers local objections: it will leave a scar along the Catskill Mountains, pose a safety risk to residential neighborhoods or encourage a longer-term commitment to fossil fuels.
“We’ve been competing with pipelines since we opened,” Carol Churchill, a spokeswoman for the French utility in Massachusetts, said by phone. Once the gas arrives in Boston, some of it goes straight to an adjacent . power station Exelon Corpand the rest is transported via existing pipes or by truck. “It doesn’t make sense to build a pipeline to satisfy demand for 30 to 40 days a year,” Churchill says.
To pipeline-builders, that’s a stopgap not a solution. They point out that New England, like other parts of the U.S., has a growing appetite for natural gas in homes and power plants, as dirtier fossil fuels like coal and oil are phased out. Gas-fired plants are supplying more than half of the region’s power this month, up from 15 percent in 2000.

Futures for August delivery rose 3.2 cents to settle at $2.734 MMBtu on Nymex on forecasts for warmer weather across the contiguous U.S. “There may not be any dramatic rallies until you get something a bit more warm, but this should be enough to put a bid in the market,” said , director of the futures division at Bob Yawger Mizuho

FERC has set Aug. 8 as its due date for its environmental assessment for 's SpectraAccess South, Adair Southwest, and the Lebanon Extension natural gas pipeline projects, a notice from the agency shows. The project proposes to transport an additional 622k Dth/d of natural gas on Texas Eastern’s mainline system from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, through Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi. Spectra said it expects U.S. approval for the projects in the second half of 2016 and a start of service in the second half of 2017, according to the project's website.

Exelon’s Braidwood 1 Reactor's output was raised to 90 percent on Tuesday. Exelon had reduced power at the plant at 11:00 pm yesterday “in coordination with PJM due to pricing signals and transmission constraints” on the grid, spokesman Paul Dempsey said Tuesday. Braidwood 1's nameplate capacity is 1,225 MW, with a max summer capacity of 1,178 MW, according to EIA data. The plants is about 54 miles southwest of Chicago.

BP Plc faces more than $20 million in penalties and surrendered profits after a U.S. regulator found that the energy giant manipulated commodity markets in Texas.
FERC said BP rigged prices at a Texas natural gas hub in 2008, according to an order issued Monday, upholding an earlier ruling by the agency’s judge. BP had denied the allegations.
“We find the violation here to have been very serious," the commission said. “BP manipulated the market to profit from a natural disaster, and it did not stop after a trade or two but rather kept the scheme going for nearly three months."
FERC brought charges against BP in August 2013. Traders at BP’s Southeast Gulf Texas desk were accused of a scheme to lower next-day, fixed-price gas prices at the Houston Ship Channel hub from Sept. 18 through Nov. 30, 2008, to boost financial bets.
"BP strongly disagrees with the commission’s decision," Geoff Morrell, a spokesman for the company, said. "BP will seek rehearing before the FERC and ultimately appeal to the Court of Appeals if necessary."
The decision should be reversed because there is "no credible evidence" that market manipulation occurred and the agency lacks jurisdiction over the trades at issue, Morrell said.
