Amen (Belinda Bonagua)

THE EMBROIDERED 70s-inspired blouseand balloon skirt ensemble Sen. Nancy Binay wore to the Senates opening session, hours be-fore President Aquino made his State of theNation Address in July, set off an unprecedent-ed bashing frenzy on social media.
As soon as photos of Binay in a Randy Or-
tiz-designed outfit cameout, bashers lost no timemaking unflattering com-parisons and memes of thesenator.
Digitally manipulatedimages of Binay likeningher look to, among others,a hot-air balloon, bolsa dehielo , Princess Fiona, theBrazilian flag and DatuPuti refill pack came outon Facebook, Twitter andInstagram.
Binay put on a bravefront by declaring in aninterview that she wasntaffected at all. Her detrac-tors, she said, would al- ways find fault in whatev-er she does and wears.
The senator graciously took the blame by sayingthat she failed to tie thedrawstring at the hem tomake the chevron-paneledyellow, olive and forest-
green satin skirt shorterand less voluminous. Just when Ben Chan
thought the worse wasover after deciding topostpone The Naked Truthby a day due to TyphoonMario in September, theboard chair of SuyenCorp. soon had to deal with storm of protestsresulting from a segment in the show held atSM Mall of Asia Arena.
A number of politicians, feminists and ordi-

Bono maynever play
guitar again
NEW YORKU2 frontmanBono says he may never play the guitar again after a bicycleaccident that injured his hand, shoulder, elbow and face.
The Irish rocker fell off hisbicycle in New Yorks CentralPark in November and under- went hours of intensivesurgery to wash out his elbowand repair the bone with threemetal plates and 18 screws.
Bono said in a post on his website late Thursday that theaccident was more seriousthan he initially thought.
Recovery has been moredifficult than I thought. As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again,he said in the reflective New Year post titled Bonos A to Z of 2014 .
The injury has forced himto cancel all public appear-
ances and communications forthe first half of 2015, he wrote.
Earlier this month, U2 an-nounced a 2015 tour, set tostart in May, which will be theIrish bands first since 2009-2011, which was the highest-grossing tour in history.
After the accident, U2sthree other members said they expected the singer to make afull recovery and that theband would be playing againsoon.
Bono said he would focuson getting better ahead of thescheduled tour start.
U2 is a live band. Live is where we live or die... Wehave some extraordinary ideasup our sleeve for this tour Ive just got to be rebuilt by 14thMay, he said. Inquirer wires

LIZA DIO-SEGUERRAActressWEDDING preparations gotthe better of us. (After theDec. 8 ceremony in the Unit-ed States, there will be an-other one in the Philippineson Jan. 8.) Since we were sobusy, Aiza (Seguerra) and Ifailed to make a big deal of our first Christmas togetheras a family.
On Christmas Day, I readmy daughter Amaras letterto Santa Claus. All she want-ed was a lemonade stand. Her wish was to sell lemon-ade and donate the earningsto the less fortunate. My
heart broke.I looked around our homeand felt dismayed becausethere was not a single Christ-mas dcorno stockings, no wreaths, no mistletoe, no tree.I told Amara that Santa couldleave his gift for her only un-der a tree. So we had to putup a tree in another place.
The house was a mess so Aiza and I decided to check in at Discovery Suites.
Aiza suggested that I get a
small tree from the mall. Thesales people willingly helpedme decorate it. Then Ishopped for groceries, forour Christmas dinner. When we got to the hotelroom, Amara saw the treeand the gifts under it rightaway. The look on her face was priceless.
Earlier that day, both fam-ilies, the Seguerras and Di-os, called up to say they were coming for dinner withus.
I whipped up bacon-toma-to-basil pasta, pan-seared
herbed pork loin, winter har- vest salad with caramelized pili nuts and raspberry vinai-grette and sauted shrimps.
It was a simple family meal, but everyone enjoyedthe impromptu get-together. Aiza usually feels depressedduring the holidays, but this year the blues were gone. What started as a spontaneousplan will become an annualholiday tradition for us. Bayani San Diego Jr.

English Onlycomes frombehindBy Bayani San Diego Jr.
FOR THE past two weeks, so-cial media has been flooded with raves for the rom-com English Only, Please an entry in the 40th Metro Manila FilmFestival which concludes to-day, Jan. 7.
Facebook, Instagram andTwitter messages, with photos
of sold-out and SRO screen-ings, verify the films unex-pected success.
To think that the movie, which top-bills Jennylyn Mer-cado and Derek Ramsay, wasa box-office cellar dweller inthe first few days of the festi- val.
The turning point cametwo days after awards nighton Dec. 27, when English On-ly, Please won seven tro-phiesincluding second bestpicture, best actress for Mer-cado, best actor for Ramsay, best director for Dan Villegasand best screenplay for An-toinette Jadaone and Anj Pes-sumal.
Alemberg Ang, supervisingproducer, said the film had 68theaters on Dec. 25, first day of the festival. On the day of the awards, the number haddropped to 65; a day later, to60. On Dec. 29, it was screen-ing in 77 cinemas and, by Jan.2, in 108.
Ang told the I NQUIRER that English Only, Please may re-main in cinemas after today.
Very pleased, indeed, isRamsay. He told the I NQUIRER via email, Our goa l was to a tleast finish in the Top 4 and we [got that]. Public responsehas been overwhelming.
Ramsay added: If you havea brilliant script and work withtalented individuals who share your passion nothing is im-possible.
