A fi ne effort by Marc but we believe he has omit-ted Bernd Saurer (AUT) for his World Junior Pairs Championships in 1999.

Triskaidekaphobia Mark Horton

Frightened of spiders? Bothered by wasps? Afraid of snakes? They are nothing compared to the world-wide fear of the number 13 and a lot of bridge players are wary of playing this board.

I have lost track of the number of stories I have penned about this fateful board but I was reminded about the phobia by a series of let-ters that have appeared in The Daily Telegraph, a recent one from a reader who lives in an apart-ment which is one of 15. There is a number 16.

This was yesterday’s fi rst example:

E/ W can take all the tricks in diamonds or no-trumps and many pairs managed to hit the top spot. One East decided to open 5♦ - that didn’t quite cut the mustard. At another table North opened 2♥, promising a weak hand with both majors and East doubled, waiting to see what partner would do. It proved to be a very long wait.

Open Teams – Round 1 Ceri Pierce

I was all settled in the bulletin room on Friday night to watch the top two teams battle it out on Bridge Base Online with a bucket of popcorn (did you know that Table 1 and 2 are on VuGraph?) when I was asked to be a last-minute substitute in a team who was missing one member. So, off I went to meet my partner for the evening, the lovely Kirstin Sosnowski from Germany and after a hasty discussion about our system, we sat down to our fi rst board. I had hoped for a nice easy board to start with, maybe 1NT - All Pass, or something like that, but this was not to be.

The play commenced with a diamond lead from South, won with the ace in dummy. Kirs-tin drew trumps, exited with a heart and North cashed his ♠A, no doubt hoping for an encour-aging signal from his partner, but that was that

for the defence, declarer making seven clubs, the ♦A, the ♠K and two spade ruffs.

2♣ Clubs and a higher suit–at least 9 cards3♣ Didn’t ask, but presumably some kind of

take-out bid

4♣ could have gone three down doubled for -500, but this is OK over a 4♥ or 5♦ contract and it turned out to be a really good save when our opponents fi zzled out in 4♦.

I had speculated that we had a 5-5 club fi t and N/S after the 3♣ bid were looking like they had a game on. Bidding to the level of your fi t (a combined 10 card suit = bid at the four-level) is usually safe (at favourable vulnerability of course) and on this occasion turned out to be very safe indeed, despite only having a 5-4 fi t. Eeek.

A very enjoyable evening with excellent team-mates. Diolch yn fawr. Or more aptly this time, Dankeschön.

Closed Room West North East South Tolle Kreuming Hellemann Bergh  Pass  1♦ Double Redouble  2♣  2♥  Pass  4♥ All PassHere too East saw fi t to double the opening bid. The Italians used to make a habit of doing this, but facing a passed partner it makes little sense - you are much more likely to help the opponents than achieve anything positive.

East led the ♣A and switched to the ♠7,

declarer winning with dummy’s queen, cashing his side suit winners and cross-ruffi ng his way to eleven tricks.

When I was defending this deal East knew bet-ter than to bid anything and West led the ♠10 against 4♥declarer being allowed to win with the jack. He crossed to dummy with a diamond and played three rounds of hearts and a second spade, going up with dummy’s ace when West discarded and playing a club to the queen. When that held he exited with a spade, but East won and played the ♠9. Declarer tried discarding from both hands but East exited with a low diamond. West won with the queen and played a club and declarer had to surrender, -50.

Declarer’s line was by no means the strongest, but even in the ending that arose he could have prevailed - although it is very hard to see how: ♠ Q ♥ 10 ♦ J 9 3 2 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ K 9 ♥ — ♥ — ♦ Q 10 5 ♦ K 8 ♣ J 8 6

NW E

S ♣ A 9 ♠ 8 5 ♥ 4 ♦ — ♣ Q 10 7Declarer must exit with the ♣10! If West plays the jack declarer discards from dummy. Now there is always a winning line. For example if West tries the ♦10 declarer ducks and discards a spade from hand (unless East plays the king when declarer ruffs and exits with a club, West shortly being thrown in to give declarer a tenth trick with the ♣Q). Declarer ruffs the next diamond, ruffs a club and exits with a diamond, again securing a trick with the ♣Q.

BCO won this match 25-16 to top the table at the end of day one.
