Kent Peterson, DTM, QS Lt. Governor of Marketing 2012-2013 A new year and a new person in the position of LGM. First, I must recognize the excellent job Michael Osur did this past year. Michael did a superb job of communicating with members in District 12 and kept everyone informed of incentives, membership, new clubs and also communicated with other Districts to see what they were doing. This year we will continue to build upon what Michael has accomplished and with Rosalyn Carter our new District Governor, we will work as a team to strengthen District 12.

This will be an exciting year as we bring in new clubs, new members, new ideas and the desire to excel. A couple of challenges for you: meet and greet fellow Toastmasters that you do not know, this is marketing yourself and building a network of people that will help you and them grow; learn to market your clubs and Toastmasters by being proactive and getting back to prospective members immediately; visit other clubs for ideas and to share what you have learned; and lastly make it a priority to attend Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) and the Fall and Spring Conferences. I look forward to serving you and the district this year.

Spring Contests International Speech Contest Winner – Greg Parker After 20 years as a United States Marine I needed to learn to communicate more effectively. A friend of mine, also a retiring Marine, Brent Danberry, suggested we go to Toastmasters. I walked in to Toastmasters of Temecula #1677 with an open mind and what I received will last a lifetime. I met amazing people all willing to help. From the moment I finished my first Table Topic I wanted to speak! I joined the club, I enjoy being mentored, I enjoy every minute… but the most fun is having the opportunity to compete.

At every level of the International competition I have met speakers with amazing stories of inspiration, in particular the speeches at the District level competition. Stories of how a dog provides comfort, a man that struggled as a child with psychiatric issues but prevailed to inspire others, a lady that stuttered and is now a lawyer who drinks mocha lattes...I am impressed with what all the speakers have accomplished to survive and grow. Sharing stories of this nature is inspiring and impressive. It was an honor to share the stage with such great speakers. I am working hard with my speech coach, Bob Freel, an amazing person. To all speakers that were in this competition - I will do my best to represent you and this District in a professional, positive, and dedicated manner. My goal in competing in the International Speech Contest is to relay the message of how destructive using a cell phone in any manner while driving causes damage, sometimes irreversible.

As the newly elected club president of Club 1677 my goals are to make sure we provide the best environment for people to learn, grow, and excel. I am honored and excited about the coming year. My club goals remain the same as the past club presidents - BE THE BEST CLUB IN TOASTMASTERS!

Table Topics Winner – Garth Lobban The Spring Conference Table Topics contest was very exciting. In fact, the club, area, and district contest series were my first contests as a Toastmaster. It is a tremendous feeling of pride, accomplishment, and even disbelief to do so well, to stand next to many experienced and talented Toastmaster contestants. I owe this success not only to the support of my little club in Diamond Bar but my family that not only supports me as a Toastmaster but also provides a wealth of stories and experiences from which to draw upon in Table Topics. The opportunity to complete and succeed at the District contest will always be one of my treasured accomplishments.

I joined Club 6093 "Raising The Bar" in Diamond Bar seven years ago by accident. I was taking my children to soccer practice at the same location where the club met for its twice monthly meeting. I happened to walk in just to listen and pass the time. Next thing I know, Michael Owen and Carl Sun encouraged me to say a few words during the Table Topics portion of the meeting and I was hooked. My goal this year is to increase the marketing presence of our club as VP Marketing and to achieve my Advanced Communicator award.

I believe Table Topics is one of the most valuable aspects of the Toastmaster experience. During Table Topics, you are challenged to think on your feet, speak clearly and concisely in order to get your point across to an audience. In reality, this is an immediately transferrable skill in the workplace or any public speaking situation in which Toastmasters may find themselves. We should never miss an opportunity to speak up and challenge ourselves to 'go for the red' in our local club's Table Topics session of extemporaneous speaking.

A note to Lance Miller - thank you for your

critique and the inferno you lit under me to

make my speech and performance

memorable. I own this speech and will see where it takes me...

Greg Parker

District 12 Spring Conference - Doral Desert Princess

Resort, Cathedral City, CA

Desert Sunshine Sparkled at the District 12 Spring Conference by Sara Cardella, DTM, Spring Conference Co-Chair On Friday and Saturday May 11 and 12, 2012, the District 12 Toastmaster happening place to be was the Doral Desert Princess Resort in Cathedral City. Fifty-five toastmasters attended the Friday Night Fun Fest and about 25 of those answered very fun and challenging Tropical Table Topics questions from Connie Jameson. Tom Jameson’s very lively auction brought in an excellent amount for the Special Environmental Clubs (Saturday’s Silent Auction brought in even more). One hundred members attended throughout the day on Saturday. What a busy day it was: Breakfast Keynote Speakers spoke, Luncheon Keynote Speaker pontificated, Awards presented, workshops attended, and contestants competed. We ate delicious food throughout the day, including breaks on the Veranda of fruit and cheese skewers in the morning and assorted cookies in the afternoon. Although the contests were wonderful and we picked excellent winners, the highlight of the conference was that we had such intimate access to what made our Guest Speakers great. Thinking about Roberta Perry’s slipping-down pantyhose adventure and LaShunda’s dating experiences from Friday night still sends a smile to my face. Saturday’s breakfast speech with newcomer Casey Jones’ view of Toastmasters from the outside to the inside was fascinating and started the conference off with a bang. The scope of Tom McKerlie’s years of Toastmasters adventures is amazing. LaShunda Rundles’ workshop on what it takes to be the World Champion of Public Speaking when you start with humble beginnings was a journey to remember. Roberta Perry’s interactive workshop on “Yes, you can!” energized the afternoon. The positive vibes from each of these sessions truly inspired us all. For me, personally, the very best part of the conference was having cooperative volunteers; especially my marvelous Co-Chair Rosalyn Carter, LGET. I didn’t expect to enjoy myself both Friday night and Saturday. However, I did. This I owe to my fabulous Volunteer Village. Each of you took your assignments seriously and completed them with grace, dignity, and smiles! It is amazing what we can accomplish when we use teamwork as our goal. The Power of Teamwork works.

District 12 Summer TLI – The Grove Community Church

Riverside, CA - June 16, 2012

By: Esther Phahla, DTM, TLI Co-chair, 2011-2012 Division C Governor

The theme “Moments of Truth” was meant to help us all reflect and take a step back to review the past year’s accomplishments and what the next year has in store for us. We had some changes with our District’s first TLI for 2012-2013 in June instead of July. Having TLI in June helped to make sure that incoming officers are trained prior to embracing their officer roles on July 1st. Our members came from all over the Inland Empire representing all 5 Divisions within District 12. Thank you to The Grove Community Church - They have a great facility with all the meeting rooms located on the ground floor on one side of the building. Registration went fast and very smooth (Thank you Division C and D). The rooms were easily accessible. We had a few new workshops to offer our members, such as “You’re Hired”, “Becoming a Great Team Leader” and “Know Yourself, Know Your Team”. Our Keynote Speaker, Maurice DiMino captivated us with his message on “Owning the Stage”. We had the Division Breakouts at the beginning of the program that way the members can get to know outgoing and incoming District Officers as well as some updates on each Division. Toastmasters from two prominent clubs in Temecula have recently chartered the Jr. Leaders on the Vine Gavel Club in February. Michael Klein from Twin Cities & Sonia Perez from Temecula Toastmasters in Area C-6 came together in October of 2011 to launch a pilot Junior Leaders eight-week learning series. John Whann, director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County, opened the doors of the clubs to us and provided us a venue at the Pechanga Great Oak Club House. Michael & Sonia arranged a meeting of the minds in early August 2011 and found that they both had a heart for the youth. They both wanted to serve their community and impact the youth in a way that could foster leadership development and prepare them for their future endeavors. The pilot youth leadership program brought in fifteen members and was so valuable to the community that John Whann wanted this program to continue. They could not deny the opportunity to meet the aspirations of these hungry, future youth leaders; thus, they collaborated and forged a partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs to charter one of the first Gavel Clubs in the region. Encouraged in seeing the fruits of the program as the youth took greater levels of ownership, Michael and Sonia rolled up their sleeves and brought in guest speakers to mentor the young public speakers. They’ve also conducted several workshops to help fine-tune the now 20-member and growing club. We chose the name Jr. Leaders on the Vine for a few significant reasons. This club is located in wine country, and just like grapes are pruned and picked at the right time to make a flavorful glass of wine, so are these youth leaders developed into polished communicators. They come in with all the same fears and inhibitions that the adults come in with, and then they are refined and groomed to go out and lead their peers in this ever-changing world. They pick up valuable skills not just to help them in the classroom, but also in interviewing for jobs, applying for colleges and also influencing others.

TLI Highlights - Continued from Page 3

TLI was shorter this year, ending at 2:30 pm; this allowed time for those who still had to attend other afternoon events. We had Breakfast where we all enjoyed the morning networking and connecting with members from other clubs and Divisions. We were also able to enjoy lunch together rather than separating into two or three divisions at a time. The box lunch was a healthy, grab and go with no long lines. Some of our members even kept the boxes as a souvenir. Change is good. It’s like taking that same road home then you decide to try a different road which helps to rewire your brain a little bit.

District 12

2012-2013 Officers

Thank you to our workshop presenters. Officers received the training they needed to get their term started with a bang! We received several great reviews and suggestions for the next TLI. Thank you, TLI co- chair Mary Carnes, President’s Distinguished Area C6 Governor. Thank you Benjamin Higareda, Distinguished Area C3 Governor who escorted our Keynote Speaker and took very good care of him making sure he was comfortable. Thank you LGET Michael Osur for your guidance throughout the preparation. Thank you all for your attendance at TLI. To everyone who contributed in making this TLI a success such as selling education materials (Division A and E), hospitality (Division B) Thanks a Bunch. Of course with change comes challenges but we worked through them and still had a great time! “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Alan Watts
