MULTIGENERATIONAL SURNAME NUMBERING SYSTEM - Lilian M. Fish
Attention is called to an article in the SEATTLE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETYBULLETIN, Vol. 33, No. 1, Fall, 1983, p. 28, by Ida Skarson tfcCormick, memberof the SGS Computer Interest Group, entitled: Modified Henry Multigenerational
r fflis^lfPicularly caught your editor's attention due to the fact thatshe has been attempting to influence ftelinde Lutz.^the young relative who induced her to collaborate on a Mann family history,to use a different numbering system than Melinde used in her Hayes family of Virginia -one which wouldbe compatible with computers andwhich would indicate the progenitors bynumbers representing the generation from John * Mann b. 4 June 1756 Elgin,co. Moray, Scotland; m. 24 Dec 1776 Janet Laing, dau of tilliara Lalng andElizabeth Douglas, dau of James Douglass and Marjory Skeen; John arrivedGloucester, Mass. 1811 with his youngest son, Janes, some of whose descendantsremoved to Virginia in the 1850s or from the first to emigrate to America:William Mann b. 26 Oct 1777, Elgin, co. Moray, Scotland, who married 25 Jan.1802 at Woodford, Cb. Essex, England the sister of a shipmate in the East Indiaservice, Mary Weald Okendon, daughter of John Okendon and his wife MarthaWeald, of Woodford, England. William was rescued froman island off the eastern shores of Africa after pirates had seized the East Indiaman on which hewas serving and brought to Salem, Essex Co., Mass. by a ship from that port.He arrived in Salem, Mass. 4 December 1803. His wife and son. John WilliamMann. b. 24 Aorll 1803 at Woodford. Essex Co.. England, arrived Boston. Mass.23 October 1806. preceding the father and vouneer brother by several years.
The method described in the McCormick article would designate Williamas 1. His father as 2 andhis younger brother as 3.
The explanation set out in the McCormick article runs:"2 is the 2nd person in the 1st generation (mavbe the 2nd
proeenitor of the surname rather than a sibling of 01)29 is the 5th child of #2.25ft is the 10th child of 025JJSAB is the 6th child of 025A „
2SA6E is the 14th child 6f #25A6The proposed modification of the Henry system would allow all the
descendants of an individual to be on a print out before his/her next sibling (unless only one or two generations are specified) and gives the following example:
" 1 GALT, Robert13 GALT, James132 GALT, Thomas
1321 GALT, Janet1322 GOLT, Mary1323 GALT, James13231.1 McJINSEY, Mary13231.11 PATTERSON, Elizabeth Ann13231.12 PATTERSON, James Alexander13231.13 PATTERSON, Sarah Mary13231.14 PATTERSON, Martha Rebecca13231.15 PATTERSON, Joseph M. (Judge)13231.16PATTERS0N, James B. (Dr.)13231.17PATTERS0N, Samuel (?) Smith13231.18 PATTERSON, Franklin13231.19 PATTERSON, John
13231.2 McJIMSEY. Eliza13231.3 McJIMSEY, Ann
13232 GALT, William "The Henry system is mentioned in write It night: A Manual for
Writing Family Histories and Genealogies (1983) by Donald R. Barnes and Richard s. Lackey, but that work does not discuss modifications made to thettenrysystem to accomodate the use of computers. Under the Henry system the lastnumber in the first example would be written 25(10)6(14).which Is not computer oriented. Don Gait of the Seattle Society uses a period every 5thgeneration to make'the modified Henry numbereasier to read. For example.25A6E.6954F.18 is a person In the twelfth generation.
Multigenerational Surname Numbering System
Harry Titus of SBCGS tells the writer that he uses a system inwhich each individual is assigned a file number and also a generationnumber. He drew the following explanatory chart:
milGRANT File No. 1 Generation 1 All descend-
ISSUE 2 2A3 2B4 2C5 ?2D
ants of A will
genemfonTOmberAll descendants
6 "2E°f "**" wil1 alwavs- IT have a "B" after' a the generation
ISSUE 8 3A number, and so on.9 3B10 TC11 3D12 "3F12a 3F - when an additional
child is learned later, the last number witha sequential Alphaletter is assigned.
It is to be hopedthat before the Hann Family history goes toprlng a concensus will be reached on the most feasible method of adaptinga family numbering systemto the computer.
SBCGS hag'Mn the works" a computerized listing of queries whichhave appeared in ANCESTORS WEST since the present format was adopted byformer editor Virgil Cooper, together with names of those who submittedthe same, and their addresses.
PROPOSED CHANGE IN FORMAT FOR ARTICLESPUBLISHED IN ANCESTORS WEST AND ADOPTION OF POLICY ON ADVERTISING BYORGANIZATIONS AND SOCIETIES.
Oannent on changing the format for articles to be published in ANCESTORS WEST or suggestions for Improvement are solicited by the editor.
A sample of a two-column page with reduction (74) is included in thisissue, in order to meet the criticism that the print is too small for easyreading. The two-column pagecould only be used for articles as it doesnot lend Itself to printing of Ancestor Charts, Marriage Records, etc. Those items would continue to be printed as at present.
Other than the courtesy exchange offerings now on the inside back cover, ANCESTORS WEST has not published advertisements for organizations orsocieties offering publications or supplies for sale and has never set aschedule of prices for such displays. Since the entire 36or 40 pagesincludes in each issue are vital to a continuance of ANCESTORS WEST as aninformational source, and all additions must be made in 4 pages or multiplesthereof, it hasbeen suggested that an additional four pages might be allotted to.advertisements, strictly limited to genealogical connected offerings. If less than 4 pages of advertisements materialized, the unused portiondwould remain blank. Recently one inquiry has been received regarding ahalf-page advertisement. The matter was discussed at one board meeting, butno recommendation or conclusion reached. It is requested that interestin such a project be made known by correspondence with the editor.
To those of you who do not receive the Newsletter and Digest of theInternational Society of Family History Societies, it was thought you mightbe interested in reading Colin Chapman's report of his 1983 genealogicallecture tour on the North American continent, and that it could be used asexample of the proposed new format for ANCESTORS WEST articles.
A brief account of his visit to SBTOS was included in the June 1983ANCESTORS WEST.

Proposed New Format for ANCESTORS WEST Articles
In California, I walked in the 1983footsteps of Queen Elizabeth II andPrince Philip, and in Ontario in the1853 footsteps of William Clayson andhis family. These experiences were attwo two extremities of my Spring 1983genealogical lecture tour on the NorthAmerican continent on which I gave 23lectures in 21 days, covering over12,000 miles
Flying initially to Calgary and thento Vancouver in Canada, to exchangeideas with the Federation Liason Officer of the British Columbia Genealogical Society, I had no time to recoverfrom the 10-hour time difference beforeflying on to Portland,Oregon, and thenSan Francisco. By car to San Lorenzoand then San Jose where I was presentedwith hundreds of 19th century photographs - many identified but totallyunsorted - of sone distant cousins. The flight to Santa Barbara in a 15-seater aircraft flying at roof-topheight was an unexpected experience butmy reception at Santa Barbara airportby their Genealogical Society was trulyregal. Two lectures, locked in a charity supermarket whilst, a pick-pocketwas being detected, and a look at thedevastation caused by the storms duringthe Queen's tour only six weeks before, added to my experiences in this partof California. A morning lecture inSanta Barbara and, grabbing a sandwichI collected my thoughts for afternoonlectures to Ventura County Gensoc. AMexican meal and an organ recital, bythe Mormon Tabernacle Organist completed that hectic but fruitful day duringwhich I displayed and distributed Federation publications and explained the
US, particularly during the world conference on Records in 1980.A short flight to Denver and a drive
by car through a snow storm to Puebloin Colorado, where there was just timefor a wash before my evening lecture.I gave two lectures the next day andthat evening was taken to a dance ofthe local German Club.I was overwhelmed when the German band played "HappyBirthday" in honour of my anniversarythat weekend - my hosts had done theirresearch on me!Although a trip to the r'.esert was in
tended for the Sunday my exhaustion determined that the day be spent relaxing with a farming family'.having 16thcentury Bedfordshire ancestors. Nextmorning it was back to Denver by roadand then to Kansas City by air and directly to TV studios for an hour's interview and then four (!) lectures.Therewas no time to see any of Kansas orMissouri as the following day I flewinto Chicago to give lectures at theNewberry Library - what a marvellouscollection of works on British localand family history, none on open shelvesbut all available on request. I .wasprivileged to be shown the miles #f[bookstacks - including one volufp bya Brimley cousin written in the lastcentury of which I knowof only one copyin this country! There were a tfewhours to see some of Chicago, whichreminded me so much of CheltenhanPtndso little of the gangster impressionsI had previously. A quick look at thegrave of Pullman (of rail-coach fame)was possible before my flight to Torontoto complete my lecturing engagements.Besides my four lectures at a seminar
idlosyncracies of specific Etaglish arch- on English research, I was able to visitives, record offices and Family HistorySocieties. The following day I had no lectures
and used it to visit Hollywood, Los Angeles and Las Vegas before flying on to
a preserved and recreated pioneer village and also the country railway station where a Clayson cousin is reputedto have dropped dead at the turn of thecentury. A trip to another cousin's
Salt Lake City. I had planned to do some farm and a visit to friends made on mypersonal research in the Mormon genealogical library, but discovered thatother 'plans' had been made for me andI ended up presenting five lectures inSalt Lake City and at Brigham YoungUniversity, besides visiting friendsI had made on previous visits to the
1981 lecturing tour of Canada completedmy 1983 genealogical visit to America;leaving, I hope, several thousand researchers better informed on Britishancestry. I flew through the nightback to England for a complete change- I had to give a lecture on NuclearPhysics at 9 am the following morning!

•Then white explorers first came into the area, at least 16 tribes of Indians roamed over Montana. The first whites to visit there were traders fromFrance, Scotland and England. In 180) Montana was part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1805 members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the stateen route west and also on the return trip in 1806. The western part of Montana was included in the section that cane to the United States in I846 throughthe Oregon Treaty.' In 1862 when gold was discovered in what is now MadisonCounty, southeast of Butte, an influx of people was attracted. Copper andsilver were found in the Butte region some twenty years later. Many mineworkers came from Ireland, Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Priorto 1364 when Montana was organized as a Territory, various parts were at varying times included in surrounding territories such as Missouri, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

In the 1903 Index volume (Grooms'), Harry Titusfound the following:
SYLVESTER, R. Harry Georgie R. McCuen 29 DecS. B.
The name did appear in the 1902 Grooms'Index, hut tlfis points up the importance of making the listings for publication f roosthe indexvolumes, rather than attempting to circumventthe official indexing volumes and "making a moreaccurate transcription from the original licenses"

The subtitle, A Key Work for Worldwide Family History Research, expresses the purpose of the listings in the 243 pages and the belief that there is no better means of putting distant relatives in touch each other. The remarkably detailed shipping lists during the19th century and civil registration records of birth, marriage and death compiled in Australia, particularly in New South Wales from I856have solved numerous queries relating to parentage and exact place oforigin of emigrants. This information is frequently not officiallyrecorded in the country of adoption of a brother or sister or in official records in their native land. In the back of the paperback bookare 20 pages of advertisements of services and available publishedguides and reference books, followed by a two-page Invitation to Participate in a Bicentennial Research and Publishing Project (17B8-198B),Austrailian Biographical & Genealogical Record. The Scope of the Project is described aatSeries 1. A Pocket Biography on each person who lived in Australia be-fore 31 December 1841. These will be compiled from two major sourcest(a) Information submitted by descendants or other interested persons, please register all eligible persons from your records including children; (b) Prom the transcription of major source records b y .the Project's research team. Volumes will be published progressively with entries appearing alphabetically in each volume.A master index will be produced in 1988. Early Registration will ensure inclusion in the first volume which will appear in 1983. As only a limited number of volumes will form Series 2, late entries willbe rejected.Series 3. Group Biographies, i.e. Pioneers of a particular district orprofessional, ethnic or social group.Series 4. Associated Projects, i.e. Biographical works being compilesby companies, community groups or private individuals who wish to publish their own material but who would like their volume to form partof an overall Biographical Series for the Australian Bicentennial.POCKET AND CONCISE BIOLCRAPHIES.
