Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who

stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks the morning after the Chinese military

forcibly removed protestors from in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on

June 5, 1989.

Several hundred civilians had been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest (most of which were peaceful) in Peking's (Beijing) Tiananmen Square the

previous day.

1. The belief that war and violence are unjustifiable under any circumstances,

and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful

means.

2. The refusal to participate in war or military service

because of such a belief.

• Education - educating both sides to help them settle differences

• Teaching forgiveness - through religious teachings

• Encouraging pacifism - getting others to follow their lead

• Keeping people informed - showing people around the world of injustice in certain areas

• Reconciliation - Getting both sides to talk to each other and encouraging a truce.
