What is a Trench?

• A connected system of ditches dug by troops for protection.

Why in the Trenches?• Because of new technology–Cannot fight out in the open all the

time

• War on Western Front turned into a stalemate (tie), so soldiers dig in.

Trenches• Trenches prolonged the war as each

side tried to break through the other’s trenches–High casualties

• Land between the trenches was called “No Man’s Land”
