Welcome to the 2014 Middlesbrough Mela in association with Middlesbrough College.

Middlesbrough Mela has become the largest and most spectacular multicultural festival in the North East. Last year’s event saw record numbers of attendees – over 50,000. Held at Centre Square in the heart of Middlesbrough Town Centre, the Mela brings world class music, local talent, a Mela Bazaar and a range of activities for the family to enjoy.

Saturday Mela on 7 June is dedicated to health and wellbeing. Professionals and community groups will be showcasing their fantastic skills in dance, sport and more on the main stage. You can also take part in a wide range of workshops and activities across the site.

This year we introduce the first Mela Parade thanks to support from Arts Council England, Thirteen Group, The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic

WelcomeFoundation and the help of dedicated volunteers and community groups. Enjoy music, performers and special surprises moving the celebrations out of the main site and into the streets.

Sunday 8 June sees a world-class line up of music acts take to the main stage, including The Shama Rahman Band, Intenso, Hussnain Lahori, Any Aman, Oshin Mehta, The Bollywood Belles, Apache Indian, and many more hosted by Ameet Chana.

Throughout both days you can enjoy the fashions, food, crafts & international wares available in the Mela Bazaar. Take a look at some of the local talents promoted by Humanah CIC on the community stage, or enjoy fairground rides, inflatables and other activities around the site.

The Middlesbrough Mela promises to be yet another fantastic weekend – we would love to see you there!

Join the crowds, the peacock and the elephant to celebrate Middlesbrough’s first ever Mela Parade.This new addition to the Mela launches the 24th year of Middlesbrough Mela, which this year brings together 13 groups, of over 200 participants and volunteers, to celebrate the diversity of Middlesbrough through the theme of colour and pattern.

Thanks to our kind sponsors Teesside University we are pleased to announce two prayer rooms will be available at the university 12:00 – 17:00 on Saturday & Sunday. As an Actor, Director and Presenter he has many achievements already under his belt and is constantly in demand all over the world.

Apache IndianThe ‘Don Raja’ himself Apache Indian was one of the earliest UK artists of Asian origin to make an impact on the charts with hits during the nineties such as ‘Boom Shack-A-Lak’, ‘Arranged Marriage’ and ‘Chok There’. This year he celebrates 25 years of success, where he has sold 11 million albums, had 7 British top 40 hits, been granted an Ivor Novello Award and more recently ‘A Lifetime Achievement Award.’ It is an honour and a privilege to have the legend that is Apache Indian headline the Middlesbrough Mela main stage.... You simply do not want to miss this one!!

Team PBNPunjabi By Nature’s songs such as ‘Fitteh Moo’, ‘Aashiq’ and ‘Kaun Nachdi’ have topped charts, ruled dance floors and made their way into the hearts and minds of bhangra fans across the world. Having performed in almost every major city on this planet and bagged more awards than you can shake a stick at, they claim not to represent a particular sound or style but to reflect a true representation of today’s Brit Asian culture.

San2 has grown up surrounded by music and his love of music saw him performing on ‘Star Ticket’ at the tender age of 8 in front of Samantha Mumba on the Disney Channel. His versatility knows no bounds, effortlessly able to switch from Hindi to English to Punjabi in a number of music genres.

Hussnain Lahori

International Pakistani artiste Hussnain grew up listening to the finest sufi rock band in Pakistan; ‘Junoon’. As a self taught musician he learnt how to play the guitar, keyboard and started singing having been vocally inspired by great artists such as Nusrat Fateh, Ali Khan, Sonu Nigam and Atif Aslam.

Oshin Mehta

Oshin is one of the very few Asian female singer songwriters in the UK. At the age of fifteen she auditioned for the very first Indian Idol in New Delhi. The Desi touch in her songs is presented in an amazingly trendy manner, delivered beautifully with her tantalising voice.

Bollywood Belles

The colour, atmosphere and beauty that is Bollywood is presented for your pleasure and enjoyment by the vibrant and glamorous Bollywood Belles. They pride themselves as being one of the UK’s most professional and high energy non asian bollywood groups bringing fully choreographed spell binding routines that will simply leave you mesmerised. So good, we thought we would put them on twice!

The Shama Rahman Band

Masters of what they dub “Urban Folk” - mixing music from English, Bengali, Bulgarian and West African traditions. Singer/Sitarist/Composer Shama weaves stories that start life as poems and take flight as songs. Expect a performance of challenging musical beauty which has appealed to the Bengali diaspora in both Bangladesh and the UK.

Getting TherePublic Transport - Nearest train station is Middlesbrough Station, TS1 1EG. Exit onto Albert Road and walk towards the town centre and university.

By Car - Nearest major road is A66. From the A66 or the A19 head for Middlesbrough town centre. Please note Albert Road is closed for the duration of the festival.

Bikes - Bikes are welcome in Centre Square on Saturday but NO bikes will be allowed in centre square on Sunday.
