World War I Centenary

On Saturday 16th November Middlesbrough Libraries

launched its First World War Centenary programme with

an early appeal to the public for information. Libraries,

Museums and Archives are linking together to explore

the experiences of local people in this terrible conflict

and are asking people to share their family treasures

and their inherited personal stories.

As the next 4 years unfold we aim to uncover the very

personal stories of all the local men, women and chil-

dren whose lives were changed for ever by those brutal

years. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, the miners and fac-

tory workers, the munitionettes, the POWs, the nurses

and stretcher-bearers, the housewives and children left

behind. What was their local experience in a world at

war?

The Tees Valley World War One project is a partnership between the 5 Tees Valley local

authorities which aims to help people discover their cultural heritage by exploring themes

such as the background to the war, the Home Front, Women, humour & morale, recruit-

ment & patriotism and technology & innovations. There will be a chance to visit exhibitions

and to take part in family outreach events and story-telling sessions, including some large-

scale outdoor performances, culminating in Hartlepool on 16th December for the centenary

of the Bombardment.

The collected memories and experiences will contribute towards a new book being

compiled by Paul Menzies, due to be launched later in the year.

Local History Month 2014 also takes the centenary as one of its themes. On 19th May there

will be an opportunity for members of the public to discover the experiences of their own

families by researching their family history in the Reference Library. At the same time the

Library will be launching its new Local & Family History Centre to the public. Throughout

May there will be a number of guided walks round the town and a series of talks and exhi-

bitions highlighting aspects of the history of Middlesbrough during the war. A full pro-

gramme for this will be available in March. For further information contact Jenny Parker by

telephone (01642) 729410 or email [email protected]
