An 80-strong team competed against four other schools at the annual event at Grimsby Swimming Pool. In addition to the overall Challenge Shield, pupils walked away with five other trophies. They won: Year 7 boys, Year 9 boys, Year 9 girls, Year 10/11 boys and overall boys. Swimming coach Mrs Arnold and the Healing PE department went to support the pupils and came away delighted and proud of the whole team. Sporting Success This year, Year 7 boys won the ESFA 5-a side football finals at Derby. The team played against schools from Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and will now play in the national finals in Brimingham. The KS4 girls netball team represented the county in Skegness earlier this year, showing some exceptional skills and teamwork in an exciting game. Healing F24 Racing Team An electric car built and driven by Healing pupils was raced at Silverstone against 97 other schools from across the country. The pupils had an incredible day looking at some of the ex racing cars, including an Aston Martin and a Ferrari. They also got to try the winners podium for size! The team came a respectable 16th place in their category. Celebrations took place at Healing School in 2019, after pupils improved on consistently strong GCSE performance. The new-style English and Maths exams saw 82% of pupils achieve a 4+ pass or higher, while 57.4% achieved a strong grade 5 pass in both. The school also obtained one of the highest progress 8 scores in the region and performed in the top 20% of schools nationally. A 4+ pass was recorded by 95% of pupils in either English Language or English Literature. In Maths, the 4+ figure was 83%. Pupils studying triple Science achieved a phenomenal 100% pass rate for Biology, Physica and Chemistry, with the school performing strongly across all other subjects. Mrs Dewland was ‘delighted’ with another set of impressive results. “Congratulations to everybody concerned. These outstanding and sustained results are only achieved as a result of the dedication and hard work of staff and pupils. We wish former Year 11 pupils every success and happiness with their future endeavours”. Lockdown Stories On 20th March, schools across the country closed their doors to pupils in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the next 4 months, we watched as our pupils found new ways of learning from home, learnt practical skills and contributed to their communities. We are very proud of you all! Feedback in Education KS4 Learning Co-ordinator, Mr Goodwin, has been very busy during lockdown engaging in the research education community. This has led to a collaboration with writers Kirschner, Oliver Caviglioli, Kate Jones and Mr Goodwin has been asked to write a case study for Michael Chilies new book, The Feedback Pendulum: A manifesto for enhancing feedback in education. Mr Goodwin will spend his summer writing his essay and we look forward to seeing it in print later in the year. This is a special “round up” edition of our school newsletter, Hotline. This golden edition of our newsletter rightly celebrates another amazing year in the life of Healing school, and what a year it’s been! We proudly celebrate our strong academic success but it’s also heart-warming to note the range of activities outside the classroom which play such a critical role in the lives of our pupils. A plethora of exciting opportunities have been made available for pupils, including the chance to travel to France as well as the Geography field trip to Skegness and who could forget the unforgettable talent demonstrated by our young actors in the highly emotive Blood Brothers performance! Pupils have also enjoyed extensive activities within school with visits by Oxford and Cambridge university representatives and the inspirational Harvesting Light workshop by Sheffield University. Such experiences, as well as academic achievement, have contributed to our holistic approach to education which helps to equip our young people for their future lives. Although many of our planned activities were sadly curtailed this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been inspiring to learn of the many skills that pupils developed and honed at home, not to mention supporting their local community, whilst also embracing their online learning - we are really proud of our pupils. Enjoy this special publication and thank you, as always, to our parents for their unfailing support of our outstanding school.

This is a special “round up” edition of our school newsletter, Hotline.

This golden edition of our newsletter rightly celebrates another amazing

year in the life of Healing school, and what a year it’s been!

We proudly celebrate our strong academic success but it’s also

heart-warming to note the range of activities outside the classroom

which play such a critical role in the lives of our pupils. A plethora of

exciting opportunities have been made available for pupils, including

the chance to travel to France as well as the Geography field trip to

Grandparents’ DayEach year, our Year 8 pupils welcome their grandparents into school for an afternoon of tea, cake and entertainment.

Mrs Dewland said: ‘We know what an important role grandparents play in the lives of our pupils. This afternoon gives the pupils chance to thank their grandparents and show them they are appreciated.”

Charity ProjectsAt Healing school, we pride ourselves on supporting charities and contributing to our community.

This year we have raised money for the NSPCC, Movember, Children with Cancer, the Samaritan’s shoe box appeal and local foodbanks.

Geography Field Trip In March, Year 10 Geography pupils headed to Skegness on a fieldtrip to collect data for their coursework. Pupils studied the social and environmental aspects of the town and discovered how investment has enhanced the area.

Roadshow Promotes OxbridgePupils’ aspirations were raised in a visit to Healing School by Lincolnshire students at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Oxbridge Schools’ Liaison Officer Katie Osmon said: “We want to raise pupil aspirations about future opportunities available to them and it is hoped pupils will feel more confident in applying to the top universities in the country.”

Oxbridge students from the area worked with the pupils and answered questions about transitioning to university.

French Trip to BoulogneThe long awaited Year 8 French trip to Boulogne took place in October.

A full itinerary awaited the pupils, starting with croissants on the Eurostar!

On arrival, we wandered round the city and the pupils enjoyed practising buying lunch and souvenirs in French. We also visited war graves to pay our respects and went to see how croissants were made, as well as meeting snails on a snail farm. C’était magnifique!

BritishnessThis year, Year 7 pupils have been exploring what it means to be British.Classes included some interesting discussions about British culture and highlighted iconic features that would be instantly recognised as British, such as fish and chips and the Houses of Parliament.

Celebrating World Book DayThis year, Healing English faculty pulled out all the stops for World Book Day.

English teachers arrived to work dressed as their favourite literary characters and pupils and staff were tasked with guessing who the characters were and which book they belonged to.

A cake and second-hand book sale was held during break and within 15 minutes, £183 was raised for Book Aid International, a charity who provide books and resources to under funded libraries, hospitals and schools.

BAE Systems RoadshowIn February BAE systems, Royal Navy and RAF came into school to speak about Energy and Engineering.

They discussed with pupils how energy is transferred and produced and the importance of the role of an engineer. They looked at renewable energies and preserving natural resources. Pupils were shocked to discover how much energy was needed to run the school! Harvesting Light Workshop

In November, Physicists from the University of Sheffield delivered a workshop to KS3 pupils called ‘Harvesting Light.’Pupils learnt about the life of wavelengths and how we translate them into colour and how energy is converted in plants. They also looked at a selection of irredescent insects, plants and feathers and analysed their make up under the microscope.

Blood Brothers PerformanceIn December, Year 10 Performing Arts pupils and members of the KS3 Drama Club, performed the infamous Willy Russell play ‘Blood Brothers.’Pupils told the story of twins Mickey and Eddie who were separated at birth, with one being raised by a wealthy family, while the other was brought up in poverty. The brothers fall in love with the same girl, which ultimately results in a tragic ending.

Singer of the YearThis year, Year 10 pupil, Ewan Pearson, was awarded the title of ‘Singer of the Year’ after competing in a competition organised by MAPAS.The competition was open to all schools in the local area and Ewan’s performance impressed the judges with a sombre piece from Les Miserables.Music teacher, Miss Roberts, said “We hope Ewan will go on to make a career of his amazing talent.”

Bin Lorry CompetitionArtwork created by Healing School pupils will be showcased on the sides of a new fleet of 20 bin lorries.North East Lincolnshire Council, ran a competition to brighten the vehicles, and announced that, from more than 200 entries, 11winners were from Healing. The lorries are now in service, so please look out for them around Grimsby!
