ä Dual Bandwidth Equalizer – 13 bands

The dual bandwidth design of the EQLconcentrates more control in the lowerbass frequencies where the interior of anautomobile causes problems. The higherfrequency controls are spaced on octavecenters to give you complete control upto 16,000 Hz. No simple dash-mountequalizer gives you this kind of flexibility.

ä Level Matching

True standards in car stereo are hard tofind. Every manufacturer has a slightlydifferent interpretation of things. Theinput and output level controls on theEQL bring everything together. Now anyhead unit can be connected to any ampli-fier and the will system sound great.

ä Balanced Input

The EQL takes noise rejection a stepfurther than the average by incorporatingbalanced differential input circuitry. Bylooking at the output from your sourceunit in a different way the EQL can rejectup to 60 dB of radiated noise.

ä Programmable Frequency Match Filter

Our exclusive Programmable FrequencyMatch (PFM) filter system brings out thebest in any system. A modular program-mable low-cut frequency filter allows thesystem installer to easily customize thebass roll-off to match any speaker design.Unruly subwoofer boxes can finally bebrought under control.

ä High Level Inputs

The EQL is so flexible that you don’t evenneed to have pre-amp outputs on yourdeck to enjoy the benefits of total control.Speaker level signals can be run directlyinto the EQL, equalized and level-matched to use any aftermarket amplifieror crossover with your system. There areno limits.

InstallationInstallationInstallationInstallationInstallationWe strongly suggest you have the EQL pro-fessionally installed, but if you are doing itsolo this section lists the procedures you’llneed to install the EQL in your vehicle. Before you begin we suggest you read thenext few sections to plan the type of systemyou want.

System ApplicationsSystem ApplicationsSystem ApplicationsSystem ApplicationsSystem ApplicationsThe EQL Equalizer/Level Matcher is quiteversatile. Use it to put together a simplesingle-amplifier system, as shown in Figure 4on page 9. Or better yet, add a couple of ourother fine components, and you are on yourway to building a great 2-way or 3-waysystem, as shown in Figures 5 and 6 (on pages10 and 11).

Installation PrecautionsInstallation PrecautionsInstallation PrecautionsInstallation PrecautionsInstallation Precautionsä Do not mount the EQL Equalizer/Level

Matcher where it will be exposed to outsideelements or extreme temperatures. Avoidareas that are subject to extreme road vibra-tion or shock. The front bumper is definitelyout-of-bounds.

ä Select an installation site that provides shortcable runs for minimum pick-up of enginenoise and RFI (radio frequency interference).Keep RCA cables together, away fromspeaker wires or power cables.

ä At the proposed installation site, make surethe holes you plan to drill will not hit thefuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines (underchassis), or go through any electrical wiring.

ä Use high-quality, fully-shielded RCA cables.

ä Plan on a single-point grounding schemethat is common to grounded parts of thesystem. Use no less than 16-gauge strandedcopper wire for the ground connection.

are in a real hurry, you can set the equal-izer by ear.

10. Listen to the vocals and instruments, andtrying cutting the frequencies in the mid-bass (90 to 250 Hz) and mid-range (2 to 4kHz) spectrum. The mid-bass response isusually a problem area due to standingwaves caused by sound resonating in thepassenger compartment. The mid-rangefrequencies are most sensitive to the earand usually need to be brought down abit.

11. Continue listening and try boosting thelow bass frequencies in the 31.5 to 63 Hzarea. Usually this area needs help due todesign limitations of smaller woofers andloss of bass in cassettes.

Using a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTUsing a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTUsing a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTUsing a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTUsing a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTA)A)A)A)A)For a really well-balanced system, we highlyrecommend using a Real Time Analyzer (likethe AudioControl SA-3055) to adjust yourvehicle’s sound system. This tool is especiallyhelpful in performing the initial adjustmentsfor multi-amplifier installations.

Balancing a system “by ear” should be per-formed as fine-tuning after using a Real Time

Analyzer, since our ears adapt very quickly toany new frequency adjustments.

In fact, if you listen to a badly-adjusted sys-tem long enough, it will actually start sound-ing pretty good. Only later, when your hear-ing “refreshes” and your buddies come toaudition your new system, will you realizehow far off the mark Def Leppard really is!

Now. . . do yourself a big favor and ask anauthorized AudioControl dealer about thisprofessional sound-balancing option.

Besides the non-standardsizes, new models even feature volume andtuning controls imbedded right in the steer-ing wheel! It’s great for convenience, buttough on the knuckles. It seems the boys inDetroit and Japan want to make sure youdon’t throw out the original radio and re-place it with some better model. In all fairness, today’s crop of factory radios isbetter. So rather than lose those nice steeringwheel volume controls, we’ve come up witha way of improving your sound system byusing the High Level Inputs on the EQL andthe speaker leads from your factory radio, asshown in Figure 7 on page 17.3OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, which usedto mean that a car manufacturer actually built and installedeach radio. Nowadays, a factory radio is made by an aftermarketcompany for installation by the car manufacturer.

It’s as simple as moving the wires from thespeakers to the EQL. Don’t worry, the EQL isdesigned to effortlessly handle the highersignal levels coming from the factory radio, without a trace of overload or added distor-tion.

WWWWWarrantyarrantyarrantyarrantyarrantyPeople are scared of warranties. Lots of fineprint. Lots of noncooperation. Months ofwaiting around. Well, don’t be scared of thiswarranty. It’s designed to make you raveabout us to your friends. It’s a warranty thatlooks out for you and helps you resist thetemptation to have your friend “who’s goodwith electronics” try to repair your Audio-Control EQL. So go ahead and read thiswarranty, then enjoy your new componentfor a few days before sending in the warrantycard and comments.“Conditional” doesn’t mean anything omi-nous. The Federal Trade Commission tells allmanufacturers to use the term to indicatethat certain conditions have to be met beforethey’ll honor the warranty. If you honorthese conditions, we will warrant all materi-als and workmanship on your EQL for FiveYears from the date you bought it, if installed

by an authorized AudioControl dealer, andwill fix or replace it, at our option, duringthat time. For you do-it-yourselfers we willwarrant your EQL for One year. Here are the conditions that make this war-ranty conditional:1. You have to fill out the warranty card

and send it to us within 15 days after youpurchase your EQL.

2. You must keep your sales slip or receipt soyou have proof when and from whomyou bought your EQL. We’re not the onlycompany to require this, so it’s a goodhabit to be in with any stereo purchase.

3. Your EQL has to have been originallypurchased from an authorized AudioCon-trol dealer. You do not have to be theoriginal owner to take advantage of thewarranty, but the date of purchase is stillimportant, so be sure to get a copy of thesales slip from the original owner.

4. You cannot let anybody who isn’t: (a) theAudioControl Factory; (b) an authorizedservice center; or (c) someone authorizedin writing by AudioControl service yourEQL. If anyone other than (a), (b) or (c)messes with your EQL Series II, that voidsthe warranty.

5. The warranty is also void if the serialnumber has been altered or removed, or ifthe AudioControl EQL is used improp-erly. Now, that sounds like a big loophole, but here is all we mean by it.Unwarranted abuse is: (a) physical damage(our mobile products are not meant to beused as jack stands for your car); (b) im-proper connection (we have done thebest we can to protect the inputs, how-ever, 120 volts into the jacks can fry theinnards of the poor beasty); (c) sadisticthings. This is the best mobile product we knowhow to manufacture, but if you use it for

the front bumper of your Baja bug andget it full of water and dirt, things will gowrong.

Assuming you conform to numbers 1through 5, and it isn’t all that hard to do, weget the option of deciding whether to fixyour old unit or replace it with a new one.

Legalese SectionLegalese SectionLegalese SectionLegalese SectionLegalese SectionThis is the only warranty given by AudioCon-trol. This warranty gives you specific legalrights which vary from state to state.Promises of how well your EQL will work arenot implied by this warranty. Other than whatwe’ve covered in this warranty, we have noobligation, express or implied. Also, we will notbe obligated for direct or indirect consequen-tial damage to your system caused by hookingup the AudioControl EQL.Failure to send in a properly-completedwarranty card negates any service claims.
