ä Dual Bandwidth Equalizer – 13 bands

The dual bandwidth design of the EQXconcentrates more control in the lower bassfrequencies where the interior of an auto-mobile causes problems. The higher fre-quency controls are spaced on octavecenters to give you complete control up to16,000 Hz. No simple dash-mount equalizergives you this kind of flexibility.

ä Programmable 24 dB/Octave 2-way Crossover

With module programmability, the elec-tronic crossover in the EQX can be matchedup to any stereo system. The 24 dB/OctaveLinkwitz-Riley2 (who!?) design was previ-ously available in the finest home andprofessional crossovers. Now this state-of-the-art crossover is yours also.

2Linkwitz-Riley aren‘t our attorneys – Linkwitz and Riley are acouple of smart guys who designed a very effective fourth-orderfilter for bi-amplified systems. You hear it each time you see amovie at your local THX theater – we like it! If you want toknow more about this exotic filter, check out our TechnicalPaper #102, appropriately titled Crossover Networks from Ato Linkwitz-Riley.

ä Level Matching

True standards in car stereo are hard to find.Every manufacturer has a slightly differentinterpretation of things. The input andoutput level controls on the EQX Series IIbring everything together. Now any headunit can be connected to any amplifier andmake the system sound great.

ä Balanced Input

The EQX takes noise rejection a step furtherthan the average by incorporating balanceddifferential input circuitry. By looking at theoutput from your source unit in a differentway the EQX can reject up to 60 dB of radi-ated noise.

InstallationWe strongly suggest you have the EQX profes-sionally installed, but if you are doing it solo, this section lists the procedures you’ll need toinstall the EQX in your vehicle. Before youbegin, we suggest you read the next few sectionsto plan the type of system you want.

System ApplicationsAlthough the EQX Equalizer/Crossover/LevelMatcher is often used in bi-amplified systems(refer to Figure 3), it is quite versatile and isdesigned to also work perfectly in single-ampli-fier and bi-amplified bridged subwoofer sys-tems, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. For moreinformation on bridging, read the section onAmplifier Bridging on page 16.

Installation Precautionsä Do not mount the EQX Equalizer/Cross-

over/Level Matcher where it will be exposedto outside elements or extreme tempera-tures. Avoid areas that are subject to extremeroad vibration or shock. The front bumper isdefinitely out-of-bounds.

ä Select an installation site that provides shortcable runs for minimum pick-up of enginenoise and RFI (radio frequency interference).Keep RCA cables together, away fromspeaker wires or power cables.

ä At the proposed installation site, make surethe holes you plan to drill will not hit thefuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines (under thechassis), or go through any electrical wiring.

ä Use high-quality, fully-shielded RCA cables.

ä Plan on a single-point grounding schemethat is common to grounded parts of thesystem. Use no less than 16-gauge strandedcopper wire for the ground connection.

WARNINGBefore installation, turn off the powerto the head unit or radio and discon-nect the negative (-) lead of yourvehicle’s battery.

Mounting the EQX1. Select a permanent mounting site for the

EQX. Make sure you observe the InstallationPrecautions listed on page 8.

2. Position the unit and use either a felt-tip penor spring-loaded center punch tool to marklocations for the four mounting holes.

3. Drill a small pilot hole at each markedlocation.

4. Secure the EQX with self-tapping screws.

Connecting the EQX1. With ignition off, disconnect the negative (-)

lead from the vehicle’s battery.

2. Connect +12 Vdc and Ground from thevehicle’s electrical system to the correspond-ing +12 and GROUND terminals on the EQX.Also connect the Remote turn-on signalfrom the head unit to the REMOTE terminal.

3. Connect a set of RCA cables from the headunit Left and Right outputs to the LINELEVEL INPUT (LEFT and RIGHT) on theEQX Series II.

DO NOT CONNECT OUTPUTS ATTHIS TIME!NOTE: For high-level signals, splice speakercable onto the radio’s speaker wires and connectthe other end to the HIGH LEVEL INPUT (Leftand Right).

12

Page 15: Concert Series EQUALIZER/CROSSOVER/LEVEL MATCHER … · Concert Series Owner’s Manual aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa äDual Bandwidth Equalizer – 13 bands The dual bandwidth

4. On the EQX, set all equalizer controls to theflat (i.e.,“0”) position. Set the INPUT GAINcontrols for minimum gain (i.e.,“-18”). Set allOUTPUT LEVEL controls for maximumattenuation (i.e.,“-∞”). Press the EQUALIZEbutton IN.

5. Reconnect the vehicle’s negative (-) batterylead and proceed to the next section.

Adjusting the EQX1. Turn on the head unit or radio. On the EQX,

you should see the (red) POWER indicatorilluminate. If not, check the power connec-tions, and try again. A test light or digitalmulti-meter works great for this.

2. Play a favorite tape or CD with consistentmusic and turn up the volume control onthe head unit or radio to maximum level.

NOTE: Since the outputs are not connected, youwon’t hear any sound at this point.

3. Adjust the INPUT GAIN control until theyellow INPUT MAXIMIZED LED starts toflicker. Now back the control off until theLED just goes out.

4. Next, start the track over so that you arereferencing the same musical information asin step 3. Adjust the OUTPUT LEVEL untilthe 2 Volt Output light is flickering steadily. If you find that you have turned the OUT-PUT LEVEL all the way up without the 2Volt Output light coming on, you may leavethis control at “0” (or its fully clockwiseposition.)

5. Turn down the volume and power off thehead unit or radio.

6. Connect the EQX outputs to the amplifier(s)inputs according to your system plan.

Concert Series Owner’s Manual

10. Listen to the vocals and instruments, andtrying cutting the frequencies in the mid-bass (90 to 250 Hz) and mid-range (2 to 4kHz) spectrum. The mid-bass response isusually a problem area due to standingwaves caused by sound resonating in thepassenger compartment. The mid-rangefrequencies are most sensitive to the ear andusually need to be brought down a bit.

11. Continue listening and try boosting the lowbass frequencies in the 31.5 to 63 Hz area.Usually this area needs help due to designlimitations of smaller woofers and loss ofbass in cassettes.

NOTE: If the (yellow) OVERLOAD indicatorcomes on, something is boosted too much.Either bring down the suspect frequency controlor adjust the INPUT GAIN controls to reducethe overall gain.

Adjusting the EQX (cont’d)NOTE: Consult the amplifier owner’s manualfor information on setting its input sensitivity. If adjustable, set each amplifier to accept asignal between 1.0 and 2.0 volts (1000 and 2000mV). This may be a minimum setting on youramp. Don’t worry, the EQX can still drive it tofull volume. If your amp cannot accept 2V youmay need to turn the Output Level down a bit.

7. Play a tape or CD (preferably one containinga variety of acoustic instruments).

8. With the deck’s volume set to a normallistening position (i.e., about one-third on),adjust the OUTPUT LEVEL controls untilthe system is playing at a comfortable level.

9. A third-octave real time audio analyzer isthe ultimate tool for getting the best soundquality from your new EQX. If you are in areal hurry, you can set the equalizer by ear.

14

Page 17: Concert Series EQUALIZER/CROSSOVER/LEVEL MATCHER … · Concert Series Owner’s Manual aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa äDual Bandwidth Equalizer – 13 bands The dual bandwidth

12. As a final check, press the EQUALIZE switchOUT and IN to compare the sound withoutand with equalization. Try different pro-gram sources and make any final adjust-ments.

Using a Real Time Audio Analyzer (RTA)For a really well-balanced system, we highlyrecommend using a Real Time Analyzer (likethe AudioControl SA-3055) to adjust yourvehicle’s sound system. This tool is especiallyhelpful in performing the initial adjustments formulti-amplifier installations.

Balancing a system “by ear” should be per-formed as fine-tuning after using a Real TimeAnalyzer, since our ears adapt very quickly toany new frequency adjustments.

In fact, if you listen to a badly-adjusted systemlong enough, it will actually start soundingpretty good. Only later, when your hearing“refreshes” and your buddies come to auditionyour new system, will you realize how far offthe mark Def Leppard really is!

Now. . . do yourself a big favor and ask an autho-rized AudioControl dealer about this professionalsound-balancing option.

Concert Series Owner’s Manual

Amplifier BridgingThe EQX comes with LOW PASS MONO Out-puts, so you can create a bridged amplifiersystem that will drive a subwoofer at maximumpower output, as shown in Figure 6.

This concept will work on almost any amplifiernot already equipped with bridging outputs (i.e.,an amplifier without common speaker outputgrounds). Check your amplifier owner's manualto verify that it meets these conditions.

In the bridged mode, each channel of the ampli-fier sees half of the load impedance (i.e., 2 ohmsversus 4 ohms). It outputs one channel in phasewith the system and the other 180 degrees outof phase. In other words, one channel suppliesthe positive half of the signal and the other thenegative side. The voltages are summed at thesubwoofer for a fourfold increase in power, asdemonstrated by the following calculations:

The formula for output power of an amplifier(single channel) is:

(Peak Voltage x .707)2

Load impedance (ohms)

For a normal amplifier (rated at 25 watts perchannel) driving a nominal 4 ohm load, theoutput power is:

(14 x .707)2

4

For a bridged amplifier (rated at 25 watts perchannel) driving a nominal 4 ohm load, thevoltage is doubled and the output power isquadrupled:

(28 x .707)2

4

As this example illustrates, a 25 watt amplifiercan provide 100 watts of power in the bridgedmode, for a noticeable increase in bass sound.

= Output Power (watts)

= 24.49 watts

= 97.97 watts

16

Amplifier Bridging

Figure 6. Wiring diagram for a bridged amplifiersystem.

17

CAUTION: Limitations in theamplifier power supply will almostalways reduce the available current. Therefore, the realized power outputwill generally be less than four timesthe amplifier’s power output.

Although bridging is the best way tomaximize bass output, check theamplifier's manual to make sure it iscapable of driving a 2 ohm load, andthat it is not already bridged inter-nally.

Making Modules

Since component speakers (like woofers, mids, and tweeters) are designed only to reproducecertain frequencies, a crossover allows us tomatch the speakers needs to the appropriatefrequency range4.

The correct crossover frequency greatly de-pends on your choice of speakers. This sectionpresents techniques for improving your installa-tion, especially if you are planning a bi-ampli-fied system or are considering adding asubwoofer.

We recommend choosing a crossover frequencybased on using the frequency response of thehigher-frequency speaker to be connected tothe crossover. For example, in a 2-way systemwith an 8" speaker for low to mid frequenciesand 2" dome tweeter for the highs, use thetweeter’s frequency specifications to determinethe optimum crossover point.

4(Sure seems like there’s a lot of footnotes in this manual!) Formore details, read our Technical Paper #104, Crossovers andBiamplification.

Most manufacturers list a recommended cross-over frequency as part of the speaker’s specifica-tions. Choosing an even higher crossover pointwill provide increased speaker reliability, espe-cially at higher volume levels.

The EQX comes with a programmable 24 dB peroctave Linkwitz-Riley crossover module set atthe factory for 90 Hz. This is a commonsubwoofer/woofer crossover point.

We also include an 18 dB per octave Program-mable Frequency Match low-cut filter modulealready set to 33 Hz. This will act as a subsonicfilter, protecting your woofers. If you have largewoofers (i.e., 12" or 15"), you may want a lowerfrequency module. With smaller woofers (i.e., 6"or 8"), use a higher frequency ProgrammableFrequency Match module.

Making Modules

1. Turn the system power off.

2. Remove the top panel and locate the cross-over or Performance Frequency Matchmodule, as shown in Figure 8 (on the oppo-site page).

3. Change the appropriate module.

4. Replace the top panel and tighten thescrews.

5. Turn the system power on.

Troubleshooting1. If you hear a “buzz” or “whine,” you may

have a grounding problem. Check all powerconnections and cables. Are all componentsin the system routed to a common groundpoint? Does the head unit have a cleanground? The factory wire harness doesn’tcount.

2. If the condition still exists, turn the systemoff and remove the top panel of the EQX(refer to Figure 8). Locate the GROUNDSELECTOR and switch it to a differentposition.

3. Apply power and listen. If the condition stillexists, you've got bigger problems. You’llneed to contact an authorized AudioControldealer to solve this issue.

WarrantyPeople are scared of warranties. Lots of fineprint. Lots of noncooperation. Months of wait-ing around. Well, don’t be scared of this war-ranty. It’s designed to make you rave about us toyour friends. It’s a warranty that looks out foryou and helps you resist the temptation to haveyour friend “who’s good with electronics” try torepair your AudioControl EQX. So go ahead andread this warranty, then enjoy your new com-ponent for a few days before sending in thewarranty card and comments.

“Conditional” doesn’t mean anything ominous. The Federal Trade Commission tells all manu-facturers to use the term to indicate that certainconditions have to be met before they’ll honorthe warranty. If you honor these conditions, wewill warrant all materials and workmanship onyour EQX for Five Years from the date youbought it, if installed by an authorized Audio-Control dealer, and will fix or replace it, at our

And Now, A Word From Our Lawyers

option, during that time. For you do-it-yourselfers we will warrant your EQX for Oneyear.

Here are the conditions that make this warrantyconditional:

1. You have to fill out the warranty card andsend it to us within 15 days after you pur-chase your EQX.

2. You must keep your sales slip or receipt soyou have proof when and from whom youbought your EQX. We’re not the onlycompany to require this, so it’s a good habitto be in with any stereo purchase.

3. Your EQX has to have been originallypurchased from an authorized AudioControldealer. You do not have to be the originalowner to take advantage of the warranty, but the date of purchase is still important, sobe sure to get a copy of the sales slip fromthe original owner.

23

4. You cannot let anybody who isn’t: (a) theAudioControl Factory; (b) an authorizedservice center; or (c) someone authorized inwriting by AudioControl service your EQX.If anyone other than (a), (b) or (c) messeswith your EQX Series II, that voids thewarranty.

5. The warranty is also void if the serial num-ber has been altered or removed, or if theAudioControl EQX is used improperly. Now,that sounds like a big loophole, but here isall we mean by it.

Unwarranted abuse is: (a) physical damage(our mobile products are not meant to beused as jack stands for your car); (b) improperconnection (we have done the best we canto protect the inputs, however, 120 voltsinto the jacks can fry the innards of the poorbeasty); (c) sadistic things.

This is the best mobile product we knowhow to manufacture, but if you use it for the

front bumper of your Baja bug and get it fullof water and dirt, things will go wrong.

Assuming you conform to numbers 1 through 5,and it isn’t all that hard to do, we get the optionof deciding whether to fix your old unit orreplace it with a new one.

Legalese SectionThis is the only warranty given by AudioControl. This warranty gives you specific legal rightswhich vary from state to state.

Promises of how well your EQX will work are notimplied by this warranty. Other than what we’vecovered in this warranty, we have no obligation, express or implied. Also, we will not be obligatedfor direct or indirect consequential damage toyour system caused by hooking up the AudioCon-trol EQX.

Failure to send in a properly-completed war-ranty card negates any service claims.
