Recently, Shawn Young, the founder

of the Bootstraps Asset Building course,

shared some interesting information

with TLC staff:

According to the American

Psychological Association, 75% or

Americans say that money is their

biggest stressor.

The Center for Disease Control

estimates that 80% of all medical

expenditures are due to stress related

illnesses.

Harvard University found that health

related debt is the #1 cause of

bankruptcy in the US.

It is a never-ending circle! Is there any

wonder why many of our families share

that they are on an endless merry-go-

round and cannot seem to get ahead?

TLC wants to help! Several of our

staff have taken the training to be

Bootstraps Asset Building educators and

now teach the classes. The classes are

free, dinner will be provided and we will

be providing child care stipends to pay

for child care for children ages 11 and

under. Classes will be held Wednesdays

from 6:00 - 7:30 PM on:

January 23

January 30

February 6

February 13.

These sessions are specially designed

to help TLC families who have limited

income and sizable debt learn how to

better manage their resources.

All TLC families are welcome to

register. However, space is limited.

Please RSVP with Rosie (435) 673-5353

New research from the University of Missouri suggests that reciting numbers is not enough to prepare children for math success in elementary school. The research indicates that counting, which requires assigning numerical values to objects in chronological order, is more important for helping preschoolers acquire math skills. “'Reciting means saying the numbers from memory in chronological order, whereas counting involves understanding that each item in the set is counted once and that the last number stated is the amount for the entire set,' said Louis Manfra, an assistant professor in Missouri University's Department of Human Development and Family Studies. 'When children are just reciting, they’re basically repeating what seems like a memorized sentence. When they’re counting, they’re performing a more cognitive activity in which they’re associating a one-to-one correspondence with the object and the number to represent a quantity.'” - Contributed by Zvia Dover from Exchange Everyday

All National Parks will have a fee-free day:

Monday January 21, 2013

This means that Zion, Angels Point, the South Rim and all other national parks will

let you in at no cost. Can’t make the fee-free day? For our families of children or

other individuals with disabilities, you can apply for a Golden Passport which allows

the disabled individual, and all those accompanying him/her in the same vehicle,

free entry to any national park every day. To apply for a Golden Passport, stop at

any National Park entrance and show proof of a medically determined disability and

eligibility for benefits such as Social Security Disability. You will be given your

lifetime pass on the spot! Active duty military members and their dependents are

eligible for a free annual pass. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

See you on the trail!
