The Roswell UFO
Marsha wrote the following journal entry about her visit to
Roswell, New Mexico.
July 2, 2008
My family and I left San Antonio about 6 A.M. We were going to
spend a week with my cousins in Denver, Colorado. Since it is
such a long drive, we decided to stop for the night in Roswell,
New Mexico. We made several stops and finally arrived in
Roswell around 4:30 P.M.
We headed straight for our hotel. Dad wanted us to get checked
in before dinner. The lady at the desk was very friendly. Her name
was Suzie. She told us that we had come at a good time. The
Roswell 2006 UFO Festival would be the next day. Suzie said
there would be concerts, a parade, lots of food, and games. Mom
said that even though we had planned to leave early the next day,
we could stay for a little while.
We found our hotel room and carried our bags inside. Mom
and Dad wanted us to relax before we walked around. While they
rested, I read a magazine about what to do in Roswell.
I looked up the Roswell UFO Museum to see what I could learn
about the UFO. I learned that a rancher discovered that something
crashed near Roswell during the first week of July in 1947. He
thought that the debris was from a flying saucer or a military
project. The article said that the next week after the rancher found
the crash, a nurse at the military hospital also gave an interesting
story. She described the bodies that were brought to the hospital.

She even drew pictures of them. Some people say that the bodies
were aliens. Some deny that there was a spaceship. The military
tried to convince the news media that the wreckage found near
Roswell was nothing more than a weather balloon. There seems to
be many stories about what crashed on that ranch.
After Mom and Dad relaxed, we went for a walk. I took a
picture of downtown Roswell with my panoramic camera that
Mom bought for me. I wanted to get a wide view of the street
lights that looked like the head of an alien. We stopped in a few
stores around town. Most of the stores were selling T-shirts and
postcards with pictures of spaceships and aliens on them. Outside,
some people were setting up booths in the streets. Workers were
shouting to one another and working around the tourists to hang
signs. Everyone looked excited and in a hurry. I was ready to see
a spaceship land!
After dinner we went to the International UFO Museum and
Research Center. I could tell that we would not have enough time
to see everything that I wanted to see. The museum had detail
pictures, articles and models to tell the story of the 1947 Roswell
Incident and other UFO sightings around the world. I was most
interested in seeing the models of the aliens made from the
nurse’s description.
The museum was very crowded. Many people had come to see
the festival and learn more about UFOs. Some people were
laughing and I could tell that they did not believe the stories about
the crash of a spaceship. Other people seemed to be serious. I was
asking many questions to Dad when a lady walked up.

The woman said that she had
heard us talking. She said that
she lived in Roswell. She
pointed to a model of an alien
and told me that a nurse had
given some very convincing
details about some bodies
brought from the crash to the
hospital. That nurse was
transferred to England the next
week after she told her story. To this very day, no one has heard
from her since she left the military base at Roswell. The woman
told us about how the military had researched the site. They gave
two different stories about what they found. Then, we heard an
announcement that the museum would be closing in ten minutes.
Now, I’ve seen the aliens, but I still have no idea if they are
real. One thing is for sure, though. Real or not, the UFO has
brought a lot of excitement to the town of Roswell.

Title of the Selection The Roswell UFO
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Descriptive Narrative, Journal Entry
Directions
Students use marking strategies and complete the thinking guide as they read the selection. A marked selection is provided in High Tech Test Prep e-Lesson 3.
Marking codes are used to demonstrate comprehension strategies. Marking codes are necessary for the students to have a system for analyzing or processing what they read. This system of showing your work while working independently on a reading comprehension selection allows teachers to make effective instructional decisions. When the staff works as a team to provide instruction and monitor progress, it is important for everyone to require the same set of marking codes.
Students who consistently score 95% or better may not be required to show their work.
For more information on marking codes and
comprehension strategies see our book titled,
