Differences between Mainstream and Independent film / companies

• Higher budget – for costumes, props and a famous location.

• Higher advertising campaigns eg. TV trailers, posters, internet adverts on Youtube, Facebook etc.

• Special effects look more realistic.

• They are shown in international cinemas for a short amount of time until they are released to DVD.

Examples of mainstream film companies:Universal, Dreamworks, Paramount, Warner Bros.Examples of big mainstream thriller films: Harry Potter, The Black Swan, Seven, Inception, Saw etc.

• Actors aren’t well known, it’s a way of getting known to top acting agents.

• Lower budget. • Lower advertising campaigns –

festivals, Facebook statuses, viral videos on Youtube.

• Aims more to a niche audience.• Special effects not as realistic as

Mainstream films.

Examples of independent film companies:Focus Features, Lionsgate, Pathe, Optimum Releasing, Revolver.

Which category does your film fall into: independent or mainstream? My groups film falls into the category Independent. This is because the film company we used in our opening title sequence was Focus Features, this immediately indicates our film category is Independent. We had a low budget meaning we couldn’t make the recce in a high class location, also when my group were discussing the location we had planned it to be in a run-down warehouse where we didn’t have to pay for any props as the warehouse was already containing all we needed. We don’t use any special effects apart from the title where we have made it look like it gets lifted up with the box behind it. This is because the box is the main prop in the film and the title is attached to it to show the box is important.Which film company might be interested in your film and why?I think the company that might be interested in my groups film is because the genre of our film is what Focus Features likes to take on and I think they would find our film interesting with it’s storyline and the character types. Some examples of Focus Features thriller films are Hanna, Shaun Of The Dead, The American, Tinker Tailor Soldier, Coraline etc.

Where will your film will be distributed to?

We will distribute our film in small/independent cinemas such as the Duke Of Yorks and The Komedia rather than in big cinemas like the Odeon or Cineworld because it will attract a more unique audience that don’t always follow the crowd of seeing a popular film release and it shows their individuality. We will also distribute our film into film festivals such as the famous Cannes Film Festival. This would not just attract the independent audience but also a wider international audience as it is in Cannes France. Many film producers, directors and agents go along to these events hoping to find the next big star/film. It would help our film become more popular if a mainstream film company wanted to sponsor our films.
