ASSEMBLYAssembly is easy and requires no tools.

!1 Position the lower stem (the straight tube)with the silver button toward the back.Using the bolt and knurled knob, attach thesearch coil to the plastic extensionprotruding from the lower stem.

!2 P ress the button on theupper end of the lowerstem, and slide thelower stem into theupper stem.

Adjust the stem to alength that lets youmaintain a comfortable uprightposture, with your arm relaxedat your side, and the searchcoil parallel to the ground infront of you.

!3 Wind the cable secure l yaround the stem.

!4 I n s e rt the plug into thematching connector on theright underside of thedetector body. Be sure thatthe key-way and pins lineup correctly.

Caution: Do not f o rce theplug in. Excess forcewill cause damage.To disconnect thecable, pull on theplug. Do not pullon the cable.

Use ALKALINE batteriesonly.

To install thebatteries:

!1 Remove theb a t t e ry cover bydisengaging theclip at the back.

!2 Align the polarityof the batteriescorrectly, with thepositive "+" towardthe coil plugconnection, asindicated by the +and – indicators onthe housing.

!3 I n s e rt (2) 9-Volt ALKALINEb a t t e r i e s , with the contacts pointed inward, and press down on the back ofthe batteries to snap them into place.

Some brands of batteries will re q u i re moderate force to clear the re t a i n i n gt a b s .

If the batteries fit loosely, and you want toguarantee a very secure electrical contact,insert a piece of paper or thin cardboardbetween the back of the battery and thesupporting post.

!4 Replace the battery door.

The Low Battery Indicator will come on and stay on if the batteries need to bereplaced.

Most metal detector problems are due to improperly installed batteries, or theuse of non-alkaline or discharged batteries. If the detector does not turn on,please check the batteries.

If the detector does not turn on, check to see that the batteries fit tightly. If thebatteries are loose, press them forward while pressing the ON touchpad. Totighten up a loose battery, wedge a piece of paper or thin cardboard betweenthe back of the battery and the supporting post, as illustrated above.

SENSITIVITYThe detector’s default sensitivity will be indicated with two segments. Atthis setting, the detector will detect a coin-sized object, such as a quarter,buried approximately seven inches deep. To change the sensitivity level,and thus the detection depth, press the SENSITIVITY " or # keys.CAUTION:At higher sensitivity levels, the detector is susceptible to electromagneticinterference from electronic devices. Reduce sensitivity if demonstratingindoors or if using near power lines or electrical equipment.Reduce sensitivity if detector emits false signals

The detector defaults to ALL METAL mode after powering on. In this mode,all types of metals will be detected. An object’s probable identification isindicated by the arrows at the top of the display. In addition, the probabledepth of coin-sized objects is indicated by the large numeric indicator in thecenter of the display. All detected objects will cause the depth indicator toilluminate. The depth indication is not accurate for larger objects; however,it will provide accurate relative depth indications. The greater the distancean object is from the search coil, the greater its depth value.

DISC/ ALL-METAL Touch PadP ressing this touch pad willcause the detector to togglebetween two operating modes,D I S C R I M I N AT I O N and A L L -METAL. If the detector is in theALL-METAL mode (the defaultmode), pressing the touch padwill change the detector intoDISCRIMINATION mode. If thedetector is in theD I S C R I M I N AT I O N m o d e ,p ressing the touch pad willchange the detector into ALL-METAL mode.

DISCRIMINATION MODEDiscrimination is used to eliminate unwanted objects from detection.To enter this mode, from ALL-METAL mode, press the DISC/ALL-METALtouch pad.After pressing DISC/ALL-METAL, the detector will:

• Beep twice• Display an "R" under the left-most segment, Iron

Ferrous objects will not be detected in DISCRIMINATION mode. Heavily oxidized ferrous objects will sometimes, however, be detected,usually with a high tone and an indication to the right of the targetidentification scale.

BASIC!OPERATION!(continued)To increase the level of discrimination, press the DISCRIMINATION "touch pad. Each time the " pad is depressed, an additional "R" will appear,thus eliminating from detection the objects which fall into thecorresponding categories.

To decrease the level of discrimination, press the DISCRIMINATION #touch pad. Each time the # pad is depressed, an illuminated "R" willdisappear, thus returning to detection the objects which fall into thecorresponding categories.

Discrimination Mode is a fixed-start-point elimination system. Objects arecumulatively eliminated as the level of discrimination increases.

NOTCH MODETo selectively eliminate a category from detection within the metallicspectrum, use the NOTCH Mode.

Technical Note:The NOTCH touch pad causes the status of an "R" segment to togglebetween ON and OFF.

To use the NOTCH Mode:The NOTCH touch pad can be depressed at any time. But forfirst-time use, place the detector in ALL-METAL mode.

A first demonstration is best accomplished as follows:1) Turn the power OFF.2) Turn the power ON.3) Press NOTCH.

A flashing "R" will appear under the IRON segment.4) Press the DISCRIMINATION " touch pad several times

Notice that the "R" moves upon each press of the DISCRIMINATION " touch pad.

5) Press NOTCH again.The flashing "R" will become permanently illuminated.

If an object has been “notched-out”, you can return it to detectionstatus. To “un-notch” a category:

1) Press NOTCH.2) Move the flashing “R” over the permanently illuminated “R”.3) Press NOTCH again.


BASIC OPERATION (continued)ITD

The ITD control is a convenient way to eliminate a known undesirable metal object from detection.

To demonstrate the ITD control:

1) Set the detector in All-Metal ModeNote: ITD functions in all modes, but is best demonstrated

first from the All-Metal Mode.2) Pass the search coil over an undesirable object.3) Notice the Target Indication

Note: You can only ITD objects that register under the five left-most segments (from Iron to Zinc).

4) Press ITD. An "R" appears under the segment to be eliminated.5) Pass the search coil over the same object again.

The undesirable object is eliminated from detection

The ITD control is easy to use in the field. As you are detecting, andencounter an object which you wish to eliminate from detection, simplypress the ITD touch pad after detecting the object.

The ITD control eliminates the most-recently detected object categoryfrom detection. The category eliminated is indicated with an "R".

HEADPHONE JACKUsing headphones (not

supplied) with yourmetal detector makes iteasier to identify subtle

changes in the thresholdlevels for better

detection results, andalso reduces drain on

the batteries. The Titan2000 XD Metal Detectorhas a stereo headphonejack located at the rear

of the case.This device is to be used

with interconnectingcables/headphone cables

shorter than three meters.11

AUDIO!TARGET!IDENTIFICATIONWhile the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is very accurate in identifying buriedobjects, the user in the field does not always maintain the display screen in hisfield of vision. Therefore, we have incorporated an audio feedback mechanismto alert the user to the nature of buried objects. This audio feedback systemfirst alerts the user to the presence and classification of objects, whose natureand location can be confirmed using the LCD display.

The detector can sound four different tones, depending on the object detected.

BASS TONEFerrous objects, such as iron andsteel, will induce a bass tone.The smallest gold objects can alsoinduce a bass tone.

LOW TONEPull-Tabs, nickels & smaller gold

MEDIUM TONENewer pennies (post-1982), largergold objects, zinc, small brassobjects, and most bottle screw capswill induce medium tones. Manyrecent vintage foreign curre n c i e swill induce medium tones.

HIGH TONESilver and copper coins, larg e rbrass objects, older pennies (pre-1982), and highly oxidized metalswill induce high tones. Quarters,dimes and other precious coins fallinto this category.

Audio Target Identification (ATI) classifies metals into three categories.

LOW TONE

Pull Tabs, Nickels,& Smaller Gold

MEDIUM TONE

Zinc US Pennies (Post 1982),Larger Gold Objects, Many

Screw Caps.

HIGH TONE

Copper, Silver & BrassCopper Pennies (Pre 1982)

TARGET!AND!DEPTH!DISPLAYREADING THE DISPLAYThe Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) s h o w sthe PROBABLE identification of thet a rgeted metal, as well as the P R O B A B L Edepth of the target, in inches.

The detector will register a re p e a t e d ,unchanging target identification when aburied target has been located andidentified. If, upon repeated passes overthe same spot, the target identificationreads inconsistently, the target is pro b a b l ya trash item, or oxidized metal. Wi t hpractice, you will learn to unearth only therepeatable signals.

The segment identifications are highlyaccurate, when detecting the objectsdescribed on the label. However, if youregister in a given category for an unknownburied object, you could be detecting ametallic object other than the objectdescribed on the label, but with the samemetallic signature. Also, the greater thedistance between the target and the coil,the less accurate the target identification.

GOLD TARGETS Gold objects will re g i s t e ron the left side of the LCD scale.

Gold flakes will register under Iro n / F o i lSmall gold items will register under PT.Medium-sized gold items will re g i s t e runder S-cap.L a rge gold items will register under Zinc.

S I LVER TARGETS: Silver objects willregister to the right of the scale, under 25¢,50¢, or $1, depending on the size of theobject. The larger the object, the farther tothe right it will re g i s t e r.IRON/FOIL: All sizes of iron and aluminumobjects will register on the far-left side ofthe scale. This could indicate a wort h l e s sitem such as a nail, or a more valuablehistoric iron re l i c .PT (pull tab): All older pull tabs fro m

beverage cans will register here. Somenewer pull tabs will register here. Manygold rings will also register here .S-CAP: Older screw caps from glassbottles will register here. Large gold rings,like a class ring, could also register here .Some non-U.S. coins of recent vintage willalso register here .

ZINC: Newer pennies (post-1982) willregister here. Many non-U.S. coins ofrecent vintage will also register here .

10¢: Dimes and pre-1982 pennies willregister here. Older, pre-1982, pennies arecomposed of copper, which has a metallics i g n a t u re similar to a dime.

CAUTION: The target indications are visualre f e rences. Many other types of metal canfall under any one of these categories.While the Titan 2000 XD will eliminate orindicate the presence of most commontrash items, it is impossible to accuratelyclassify ALL buried objects.

DEPTH INDICAT O R :The Depth Indicator is accurate for coin-sized objects. It indicates the depth of thet a rget, in inches. Large and irre g u l a r l y -shaped objects will yield less reliable depthre a d i n g s

When passing over an object, the depthindicator will light up and stay illuminateduntil another object is scanned. Repeatedindication at the same depth level indicatesan accurate target detector. If the depthindication varies with each sweep, trysweeping at diff e rent angles; there may bem o re than one target present. Wi t hpractice, you will learn the diff e re n c ebetween accurate readings, multiplet a rgets, and highly erratic readings whichevidence trash or irregularly shapedo b j e c t s .

SENSITIVITY!ADJUSTMENTELECTROMAGNETICINTERFERENCEThe principle use for the SensitivityC o n t rol is to eliminateElectromagnetic Interference (EMI).A hobby metal detector is ane x t remely sensitive device; thesearch coil creates its own magneticfield and acts like an antenna. Ifyour detector beeps erratically whenthe search coil is motionless, theunit is probably detecting anotherelectromagnetic field.

Common sources of EMI are electric power lines, both suspended and buried,motors, and household appliances like computers and microwave ovens.Some indoor electronic devices, such as dimmer switches used on householdlighting, produce severe EMI and can cause the detector to beep erratically.Other metal detectors also produce their own electromagnetic fields; so ifdetecting with a friend, keep two metal detectors at least 20 feet apart.

If the detector beeps erratically, REDUCE THE SENSITIVITY by pressing theSensitivity # Pad on the left of the control panel.

SEVERE GROUND CONDITIONSA secondary use for the Sensitivity Control is to reduce false detection signalscaused by severe ground conditions. While your Titan 2000 XD containscircuitry to eliminate the signals caused by most naturally occurring groundminerals, 100% of all ground conditions cannot be anticipated. Highlymagnetic soils found in mountainous and gold-prospecting locations can causethe detector to emit tones when metal objects are not present. High salinecontent soils and sands can sometimes cause the detector to false.

If the detector emits false, non-repeatable, signals, REDUCE THE SENSITIVITY.

MULTIPLE TARGETSIf you suspect the presence of deeper targets beneath a shallower target,reduce the sensitivity to eliminate the detection of the deeper targets, in orderto properly locate and identify the shallower target.

When pinpointing a target, try drawing an “X”,as illustrated, over where the tone is induced.

NOTE: This modern Metal Detector is referred to as a Motion Detector since it can respond to atarget only while the searchcoil is being moved over the Target

PINPOINTING

Accurate pinpointing takes practiceand is best accomplished by “X-ing”the target area.

1. Once a buried target is indicatedby a good tone re s p o n s e ,continue sweeping the coil overthe target in a narrowing side-to-side pattern.

2. Take visual note of the place onthe ground where the “ b e e p ”sounds.

3. Stop the coil directly over this spoton the ground.

4. Now move the coil straight for-ward and straight back towardsyou a couple of times.

5. Again make visual note of the spoton the ground at which the“beep” sounds.

6. If needed, “X” the target atdifferent angles to “zero in” onthe exact spot on the ground atwhich the “beep” sounds.

When swinging the coil, be c a re f u lto keep it level with the gro u n dabout one inch from the surf a c e .Never swing the coil like a pendu-l u m .

Swing the search coil slowly,overlapping each sweep as you moveforward. It is important to sweep thecoil at a consistent speed over theg round as you search. Afteridentifying a target, your sweeptechnique can help in identifying boththe location and the nature of thetarget. If you encounter a weaksignal, try moving the coil in short,rapid sweeps over the target zone;such a short rapid sweep may

p rovide a more consistent targ e tidentification.

Most worthwhile objects will respondwith a repeatable tone. If the signaldoes not repeat after sweeping thecoil directly over the suspected targeta few times, it is more than likelytrash metal.

C rossing the target zone withmultiple intersecting sweeps atmultiple angles is another way toverify the repeatability of the signal,and the potential of the buried target.To use this method, walk around thetarget area in a circle, sweeping thecoil across the target re p e a t e d l y,every 30 to 40 degrees of the circle,about ten different angles as youwalk completely around the target. Ifa high-tone target completelydisappears from detection at a givenangle, chances are that you aredetecting oxidized ferrous metals,rather than a silver or copper object.If the tone changes a different angles,you many have encountered multipleobjects. If you are new to the hobby,

you may want to dig all targets atfirst. With practice in the field, youwill learn to better discern the natureof buried objects by the nature of thedetector’s response.

You may encounter some falsesignals as you proceed. False signalsoccur when the detector beeps, butno metal target is present. Falsesignals can be induced bye l e c t romagnetic interf e re n c e ,oxidation, or highly mineralizedground soils. If the detector beepsonce, but does not repeat the signalwith several additional sweeps overthe same spot, there is probably notarget present.

When searching very trashingground, it is best to scan small areaswith slow, short sweeps. You will be

surprised just how much trash metaland foil you will find in some areas.The trashiest areas have beenfrequented by the most people, andfrequently hold the most promise forfinding the most lost valuables.

Also maintain the search coilpositioned just above the surface ofthe ground, without making contactwith the ground. Making contact withthe ground can cause false signals.

TERMINOLOGYThe following terms are used throughout the manual, and are standardterminology among detectorists.

ELIMINATIONReference to a metal being "eliminated" means that the detector will notemit a tone, nor light up an indicator, when a specified object passesthrough the coil’s detection field.

DISCRIMINATIONWhen the detector emits different tones for different types of metals, andwhen the detector "eliminates" certain metals, we refer to this as thedetector "discriminating" among different types of metals.Discrimination is an important feature of professional metal detectors.Discrimination allows the user to ignore trash and otherwise undesirableobjects.

RELICA relic is an object of interest by reason of its age or its association withthe past. Many relics are made of iron, but can also be made of bronzeor precious metals.

IRONIron is a common, low-grade metal that is an undesirable target in certainmetal detecting applications. Examples of undesirable iron objects areold cans, pipes, bolts, and nails.Sometimes, the desired target is made of iron. Property markers, forinstance, contain iron. Valuable relics can also be composed of iron;cannon balls, old armaments, and parts of old structures and vehicles canalso be composed of iron.

FERROUSMetals which are made of, or contain, iron.

PINPOINTINGPinpointing is the process of finding the exact location of a buried object.Long-buried metals can appear exactly like the surrounding soil, and cantherefore be very hard to isolate from the soil.

PULL-TABSDiscarded pull-tabs from beverage containers are the most bothersometrash items for treasure hunters. They come in many different shapes andsizes. Most pull-tabs can be eliminated with the Mode Control, but someother valuable objects can have a magnetic signature similar to pull-tabs,and will also be eliminated when discriminating out pull-tabs.

GROUND BALANCEGround Balancing is the ability of the detector to ignore, or "see through,"the earth’s naturally occurring minerals, and only sound a tone when ametal object is detected.
