Step 1 — Battery

Apple designed their new iPods tobe very difficult to take apart withoutdestroying major components.Because of the metal faceplate, themetal backing, and the 13 (yes, 13)metal clips holding the casetogether, this is one of the toughestiPods to disassemble.

Proceed with caution and thewarning that you may significantlydamage your iPod beyond itspresent condition. Also, you maywant a few extra pairs of plasticopening tools during installation, asthey are easy to ruin when openingthe iPod. Have fun!

Before opening your iPod, ensurethat the hold switch is in the lockedposition.

Step 2

Opening this iPod is challenging.Don't get discouraged if it takes youa few tries before the iPod isopened. One thing to notice is theangle of the plastic opening tool's tipwhile inserting it into the iPod.Ideally, the angle should be asvertical as possible while stillclearing the edge of the rear panel.

Insert a plastic opening tool into theseam between the front and back ofthe iPod.

Step 3

Insert another plastic opening toolinto the seam between the front andback of the iPod, leaving at least 1.5inches of space between the twotools.

Step 4

At an angle, carefully insert a puttyknife about 1/8 inch into the seambetween the two opening tools.

There are thin metal rails runningalong the inside of the rear panel, sotake great care when inserting theputty knife.

Once the putty knife has cleared thelip of the rear panel, pivot the puttyknife so that it is vertical, andcarefully (but firmly) wiggle it straightdown into the gap between theopening tools.

Step 5

Push with your fingers on the rearpanel behind the putty knife tominimize bending. Slowly flex theputty knife, as shown in the picture,to ensure that most of the metal tabson this side of the iPod aredisengaged.

The theory behind this method is,rather than attempting to not bendthe rear panel at all, to bend it in afavorable manner that allows you toeasily restore it later. Therefore, anybend in the sides of the rear panelshould be drawing the lip of the rearpanel away from the iPod, ratherthan pushing out on the curvedsurface. This method alsodisengages as many of the sideclips as possible.

Step 6

Remove the putty knife from theiPod and reinsert it closer to thecorner of the iPod, using the samewiggle method as before.

If at all possible, do not bend thecorner of the rear panel.

Step 7

Between the lock slider andheadphone jack, insert a plasticopening tool into the seam betweenthe front and back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to carefullyflex the putty knife downward inorder to create more of a gap for theopening tool, but be sure not to bendthe corner of the rear panel!

Step 8

Near the center of the display, carefully insert a metal spudger intothe gap created by the plasticopening tool.

It is easy to create a noticeablebump in the rear panel here that isdifficult to repair. When prying thetab free, try to have the metalspudger pivot on the edge of therear panel rather than bending therear panel outward.

Using the metal spudger, disengagethe single clip on the top of the iPod.

Step 9

Near the other top corner, insert anopening tool into the seam betweenthe front and back of the iPod

Step 10

On the other side, insert an openingtool into the seam between the frontand back of the iPod.

You may find it easier to angle theopening tool stuck in the top cornerin order to create a sufficient gap.

Step 11

Remove the plastic opening toolfrom the top corner and insert it intothe seam between the front andback of the iPod, leaving at least 1.5inches of space between the twotools (as done on the other side).

Step 12

At an angle, carefully insert a puttyknife about 1/8 inch into the seambetween the two opening tools.

Again, there are thin metal railsrunning along the inside of the rearpanel, so take great care wheninserting the putty knife.

Once the putty knife has cleared thelip of the rear panel, angle the puttyknife so that it is vertical, andcarefully (but firmly) wiggle it straightdown into the iPod via the gapbetween the plastic opening tools.

Push with your fingers on the rearpanel behind the putty knife tominimize bending. Ever so slightlyflex the putty knife to ensure thatmost of the metal tabs on this sideof the iPod are disengaged.

Step 13

The metal clips near the corners arenotorious for tenaciously grippingthe front panel. It is necessary todisengage these clips in order toopen the iPod.

Carefully insert a metal spudger intothe area near the stubborn metalclip.

Step 14

Gently wiggle the metal spudgerdown so that it is all the way in therear panel.

Step 15

Gently begin to disengage the clipfrom the front panel.

It is easy to create a noticeablebump in the rear panel here that isdifficult to repair. When prying thetab free, try to have the metalspudger pivot on the edge of therear panel rather than bending therear panel outward.

Step 16

Continue to push up on the frontpanel with the metal spudger untilthe metal clip releases.

Step 17

There are two ribbon cablesconnecting the rear panel to the restof the iPod. In the following step, becareful not to damage these ribboncables.

Grasp the front panel assembly withone hand and the rear panel with theother.

Take a deep breath!

Gently (GENTLY) disengage theremaining clips on the rear panel bypulling the tops of the front and rearpanels away from each other (thinkof the bottom of the iPod as ahinge), taking great care not todamage the ribbon cables holdingthe two halves together.

Step 18

Use a spudger to lift the retainingflap holding the connector cable.

The retaining flap only needs tolift up 2 mm. This is a sensitiveconnector and too much force canremove it from the logic board.

Slide the orange battery ribbon outof its connector.

Step 19

Place the rear panel next to theiPod, being careful not to strain theorange headphone jack cable.

Step 20

Lift the hard drive up with one handso you can access the headphonejack ribbon beneath.

Use a spudger to flip up the plastictab holding the headphone jackribbon in place. The tab will rotateup 90 degrees, releasing the ribboncable.

Slide the orange headphone jackribbon out of its connector.

The rear panel is now free from theiPod.

Step 21

Now to repair the damage causedby liberating the internal parts of theiPod Classic! It is highly likely that atleast one of the metal clips in thelower case has been bent upward. These clips must all be pointingdownward in order to reinstall therear panel.

Step 22

Take the broad, flat side of the metalspudger and push the clip down, taking care not to tear the thin metalrail from the rear panel. Alternativelya pair of flat pin nosed pliers can beused to reduce risk of slipping anddamaging the headphone jack.

Be careful not to damage any of theheadphone jack parts while shapingthese clips!

Step 23

On a clean, hard surface, lay therear panel on its side. Carefully butfirmly push down on it, rolling theentire lip side back into its properspot.

It may be necessary to do thismultiple times in order to achieveoptimal straightness on the sides. Itis better to have the edges of thecase pushed in slightly too far ratherthan not far enough, because thereseating of the front panel will bendthe rear panel into its correctalignment.

Now that the rear panel is back to abeautiful condition, you can move onto repairing the iPod!

Step 24

The battery is attached to the rearpanel with adhesive. Be careful notto tear the orange headphone jackor hold button ribbon cables whenremoving the battery.

Use a spudger to lift the battery andthe attached orange cable out of theiPod. If you have a 160 GB iPod, thebattery will be thicker than the onepictured.

Step 25 — Headphone Jack & Hold Switch

Use one hand to hold the orangeribbon cables in place, and peel upthe black tape securing the cables tothe rear panel with your other hand.

Step 30

If you're just trying to remove the rear panel, you can skip Steps 30 and 31.

If your replacement headphone jack includes the white plastic hold switch, simply reinstall thereplacement headphone jack. When replacing the hold switch assembly note the locating pin nearthe hole the silver screw position, concentrate on locating that and the rest falls into place. Onceit's all screwed in remember to peal the backing tape off the contact pad just along from the jack.

If your replacement part does not include the plastic hold switch, follow the next steps to transferthe plastic hold switch to your new headphone jack.

Remove the single Phillips screw nearest to the hold switch.

Lift the plastic portion of the Hold switch away from the orange ribbon cable.

Ensure that the black notch lines up with the gray slider during reassembly of the switch (seepicture 2).
