PREFACE
The Department of Commerce was formed on 28.12.1998 with the objectives of
promoting research, teaching and training in the frontier fields of Commerce. In a
short span of time, the Department has established itself in the area of Finance. In
recognition of the excellent contributions made in the field of Finance, the University
has renamed it as the Department of Commerce and Financial Studies. It functions
under the School of Business Studies, Faculty of Management. The Department offers
M.B.A (Financial Management), M.Phil (Management) and Ph.D (Commerce and
Management).

PEDAGOGY
The department has been constantly refining its modules to suit the needs of the
Industry. The syllabus is revised every three years and assessment methods are
constantly modified. The corner stone of the pedagogy used in the Department
is the Case Study method of learning. Case discussions are supplemented with
guest lectures, seminars, workshops, Industrial Visit, management games,
industrial training- cum- project and so on.

VALUE ADDED COURSE
Program Objectives
To provide practical knowledge through certain hands on training, educational tours, organizing
events and other innovative teaching methods besides relevant theoretical knowledge.
To train the students to get through the certification examinations offered by the concerned
regulatory body enabling the certification for the mutual fund consultant.

Eligibility
The Students currently studying PG / Ph.D in the University Departments are eligible to register
for Value Added Course. Concurrent – Classes during Weekends/Holidays of the University to
facilitate learners.

M.B.A FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Program objectives
The objectives of M.B.A Financial Management programme are:
Demonstrate a general knowledge framework and understanding of key financial functions
Get In-depth Knowledge and understanding of financial management of domestic and
multinational corporate
Identify, appraise and appreciate successful implementation of business projects
Effective argumentation in oral and written presentation
Analyse the trend of the securities market using sophisticated techniques
Offer comprehensive solutions to business problems by evaluating information using reasoning
and analysis
Consider the multinational perspective in arriving solutions in the present globalised context
Integrate the social and ethical dimensions in arriving the final solution
Eligibility
B.Com / B.B.A/ B.A Corporate Secretaryship/ B.A. Bank Management/ Commerce related
disciplines (with at least one Accountancy Course in eligibility degree is essential) with a minimum
aggregate of at least 50% of marks (IInd class) under Part-III subjects.
Selection Procedure
Admission is based on Entrance Test conducted by Department of Commerce and Financial Studies
and academic score in eligible UG programmes (50% weightage for UG part – III marks and 50%
weightage for Entrance Test Score). The exemption from the Entrance Test will be given for the
Candidates who apply with a valid score of TANCET / GMAT / MAT / CAT / GATE of respective
years. The admission is based on the Reservation policy of the Government of Tamil Nadu as
applicable during the respective years.

M.PHIL MANAGEMENT
Program objectives
Demonstrate the ability to listen and to read attentively and to express ideas with clarity in
both oral and written communications
Develop research level thinking on advanced finance and financial markets area
Effective improvement in skills sets namely computing skills, teaching skills and
communicative skill
Ability to construct Questionnaire and Schedule for effective primary data collection, and
Training in statistical tools and its applications
Eligibility
A candidate who has qualified the M.B.A. Degree (through regular study/ Distance Education mode)
with not less than 55% of marks or 5.51 in 10.00 grade point average scale under CBCS in M.B.A is
eligible to register for M.Phil Management. The candidates who have qualified for the M.B.A Degree
prior to 19-09-1991, with not less than 50% of marks is also eligible to register for M.Phil
Management. Those who have qualified with not less than 55% marks in B.B.A (Hons.) under the
old regulations of any other University recognized by this University as equivalent thereto are also
eligible to register for M.Phil Management Programme in the Department of Commerce and
Financial Studies, Bharathidasan University. SC/ ST candidates are given 5% exemption from the
prescribed minimum marks.
Selection Procedure
Entrance examination will be conducted by the department. However, students with NET/SLET are
exempted from applying for entrance exams. The rank list will be prepared basedon the entrance
examination marks, oral interview, and marks obtained in Under Graduation and Post Graduation.
The admission is based on the Reservation policy of the Government of Tamil Nadu as applicable
during the respective years.

Ph.D IN COMMERCE/MANAGEMENT
Program objectives
1. Get indepth insights into the learning outcomes of the courses studied in their Under Graduation.
2. Get deeper knowledge on their specialised courses studied in their Post Graduation.
3. Summarise the current research problems in the area of research in business studies.
4. Comprehend the major issues in their area of research through oral and written communication.
5. Identify and address the ethical issues in their area of research.
6. Frame the effective research design to carry out the research.
7. Carry out the original research.
8. Present the research report in an effective way.
Eligibility
Candidates who have qualified for Master's degree (10 + 2 + 3 + 2 pattern or equivalent in
that order) of this university or any other university recognized by UGC as equivalent thereto with
not less than 55% of marks or a CGPA of 5.51 in the 10 point scale under CBCS in their M.Com and
M.B.A are eligible to register for Ph.D. in Commerce and Management respectively. Candidates,
who have qualified for CA / CFA / ACS / ICWA with basic degree, are also eligible to register for
Ph.D. Their Course of study must be as per the regulations of this University or any other University
accredited by UGC for the award of the degrees in the respective discipline of study corelatable with
those of Bharathidasan University. Candidates belong to OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / SC / ST /
differently-abled category are eligible for 5% exemption from the prescribed minimum marks. The
candidates who have qualified for Master's Degree prior to 19-9-1991, with not less than 50% of
marks, are also eligible to register for Ph.D. programme in Bharathidasan University.
Selection Procedure
Departmental Research Committee (DRC) of Department of Commerce and Financial Studies is an
effective coordination of the Ph.D. research activities of the departments including admission of
Ph.D candidates as per the university regulations and maintenance of the quality of research.
