With summer just around the corner, thousands of people will be turning to water activities to stay cool. While water activities can be refreshing and fun, they can become dangerous and even life-threatening if swimmers are not adequately prepared.

Dr. James Hickey, former principal at Old Bridge High School, is a certified water safety instructor and lifeguard with the American Red Cross. Old Bridge’s Dr. James Hickey offers a few tips for swimmers to keep in mind when venturing out into the water this summer.

Know how to respond in an emergency: Especially with water sports, one never knows if or when a swimmer may get into trouble in the water. Be sure that someone in your party knows how to perform CPR, and make sure you have the appropriate safety equipment readily available, such as life jackets, a first aid kit, and any equipment that can be thrown in the water to assist a distressed swimmer.

Wear appropriate footwear: Especially if swimming in the ocean, where there are sharp rocks and other objects in the water. It is, it is always a good idea to wear plastic swim shoes or aqua socks in order to protect the feet.

Never swim alone: This may go without saying, but it bears repeating that one should never swim alone. Utilizing a buddy system ensures that there is always another individual available who can help you or get help for you in the event of an emergency.
