Edmund Barton

Edmund Barton was the first PM for Australia. They celebrated at a grand ceremony on the same day.

Australian Federation

Australia had six self governing colonies. They were New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. These colonies were under British rule from the time the First Fleet landed in 1788. Many politicians and influenced Australians through the years had pushed for federation of the colonies, and self-government.

Australian Federation was an agreement by the existing British colonies promising to work together under the Australian constitution as one nation.

Australian Federation started January 1st 1901. They celebrated at Sydney’s Centennial Park.

He was only 12 years old and he had to work for 12 hours 6 days a week. Andrew went to school at night. He had to walk 4 kilometers from his house to the mines. In 1885 he came to Australia.
