ModuleOne:GettingStarted

Timemanagementmostoftenbeginswithsettinggoals.Thesegoalsarerecordedandmaybebrokendownintoaproject,anactionplan,orjustasimpletasklist.Activitiesarethenratedbasedonanumberoffactorsincluding;urgency,importance,prioritiesassigned,anddeadlinesset.Thisprocessresultsinaplanwithatasklistorcalendarofactivities.Routineandrecurringtasksareoftengivenlessfocusthantasksthatcontributetonewimportantgoals.

Thisentireprocessissupportedbyaskillsetthatshouldinvolvepersonalmotivation,delegationskills,organizationtools,andcrisismanagement.We’llcoverallthatandmoreduringthiscourse.

WorkshopObjectives

Researchhasconsistentlydemonstratedthatwhencleargoalsareassociatedwithlearning,itoccursmoreeasilyandrapidly.Withthatinmind,let’sreviewourgoalsforthiscourse.

Goalsettingiscriticaltoeffectivetimemanagementstrategies.Itisthesinglemostimportantlifeskillthat,unfortunately,mostpeopleneverlearnhowtodoproperly.Goalsettingcanbeusedineverysingleareaofyourlife,includingeducational,financial,physical,personaldevelopment,relationships,orevenspiritual.AccordingtoBrianTracy’sbook“Goals”,fewerthan3%ofpeoplehaveclear,writtengoals,andaplanforgettingthere.Settinggoalsiswhatcanputyouaheadofthepack!

Somepeopleblameeverythingthatgoeswrongintheirlifeonsomethingorsomeoneelse.Theytaketheroleofavictim,givingawayalltheirpowerandcontrol.Successfulpeopleinsteaddedicatethemselvestowardstakingresponsibilityfortheirlives,nomatterwhattheunforeseenoruncontrollableeventsare.Liverighthereandnow:thepastcannotbechanged,andthefutureisalteredasadirectresultofwhatyoudorightnow!

TheThreeP’s

Settingmeaningful,long-termgoalsisagiantsteptowardachievingyourdreams.Inturn,settingandachievingshort-termgoalscanhelpyouaccomplishthetasksyou'llneedtoachievethelong-termones.ItisalsoimportanttomakesurethatallofyourgoalsunleashthepowerofthethreeP's:

• POSITIVE:Whocouldgetfiredupaboutagoalsuchas"Findacareerthat'snotboring"?Goalsshouldbephrasedpositively,sotheyhelpyoufeelgoodaboutyourselfandwhatyou'retryingtoaccomplish.Abetteralternativemightbethis:"Enrollinpre-lawclassessoIcanhelppeoplewithlegalproblemssomeday."

• PERSONAL:Goalsmustbepersonal.Theymustreflectyourowndreamsandvalues,notthoseoffriends,family,orthemedia.Whencreatingyourgoalstatement,alwaysusetheword“I”inthesentencetobranditasyourown.Whenyourgoalsarepersonal,you'llbemoremotivatedtosucceedandtakegreaterprideinyouraccomplishments.

• POSSIBLE:Whensettinggoals,besuretoconsiderwhat'spossibleandwithinyourcontrol.GettingintoanIvyLeagueuniversitymaybepossibleifyouareearninggoodgradesbutunrealisticifyou'restruggling.Inthelattercase,amorereasonablegoalmightbetoattendauniversityortradeschoolthatofferscoursesrelatedtoyourchosencareer.Youmightalsopursuevolunteerworkthatwouldstrengthenyourcollegeapplications.

TheSMARTWay

SMARTisaconvenientacronymforthesetofcriteriathatagoalmusthaveinorderforittoberealizedbythegoalachiever.

• Specific:SuccesscoachJackCanfieldstatesinhisbookTheSuccessPrinciplesthat,“Vaguegoalsproducevagueresults.”Inorderforyoutoachieveagoal,youmustbeveryclearaboutwhatitisexactly,thatyouwant.Oftencreatingalistofbenefitsthattheaccomplishmentofyourgoalwillbringtoyourlife,willgiveyourmindacompellingreasontopursuethatgoal.

• Measurable:It’scrucialforgoalachievementthatyouareabletotrackyourprogresstowardsyourgoal.That’swhyallgoalsneedsomeformofobjectivemeasuringsystemsothatyoucanstayontrackandbecomemotivatedwhenyouenjoythesweettasteofquantifiableprogress.

• Achievable:Settingbiggoalsisgreat,butsettingunrealisticgoalswilljustde-motivateyou.Agoodgoalisonethatchallenges,butisnotsounrealisticthatyouhavevirtuallynochanceofaccomplishingit.

• Relevant:Beforeyouevensetgoals,it’sagoodideatositdownanddefineyourcorevaluesandyourlifepurpose.It’sthesetoolswhichultimatelydecidehowandwhatgoalsyouchooseforyourlife.Ifyouarenotquiteclearaboutyourvaluesandpurpose,knowthattheywilldevelopandchangeinthefuture.Nowisthetimetostartwithcreatinggoalsforthisstageofyourlife.Goals,inandofthemselves,donotprovideanyhappiness.Goalsthatareinharmonywithourlifepurposedohavethepowertomakeushappy.

• Timed:Withoutsettingdeadlinesforyourgoals,youhavenorealcompellingreasonormotivationtostartworkingonthem.Bysettingadeadline,yoursubconsciousmindbeginstoworkonthatgoal,nightandday,tobringyouclosertoachievement.

PrioritizingYourGoals

Achievingchallenginggoalsrequiresalotofmentalenergy.Insteadofspreadingyourselfthinbyfocusingonseveralgoalsatonce,investyourmentalfocusononegoal,themostimportantgoalrightnow.Whenyouareprioritizing,chooseagoalthatwillhavethegreatestimpactonyourlifecomparedtohowlongitwilltaketoachieve.Alargepartofgoalsettingisnotjustidentifyingwhatyou

want,butalsoidentifyingwhatyoumustgiveupinyourlifeinordertogetit.Mostpeopleareunwillingtomakeaconsciousdecisiontogiveupthethingsintheirlifenecessarytoachievetheirgoals.

Visualization

Emotionalizingandvisualizingyourgoalwillhelpyoucreatethedesiretomaterializeitintoyourlife.Oneofthebestvisualizationtoolsisavisionboard.Simplyfindamagazine,cutoutpicturesthatresonatewiththegoalthatyouwanttoachieve,gluethemontoapieceofposterboard,andplacethatboardsomewherethatyoucanviewitseveraltimesaday.

Inorderforvisualizationtowork,it’snecessarythatyouemotionalizeyourgoalasmuchaspossible.Createalistofthebenefitsyouwillseewhenyouachieveyourgoalandconcentrateonhowthatwillmakeyoufeel.

MargaretandRachelwerereviewingtheirmid-yearprofitportfolioinJuneandrealizedtheywerenotmakingenoughmoney.

RachelthenhadthebrilliantideaofusingtheSMARTwaytocomeupwithanachievablegoal.

MargaretandRachelthensatdownthoughtofaSPECIFICgoaltheywantedtoreach.Afterlotsofdeliberation,theydecidedtheywantedtoincreasetheirrevenueby10percent.

InordertokeeptheirgoalMEASURABLE,theyweregoingtomeasuretheirprogressmonthly.ThiswouldmakesurethattheirgoalwasATTAINABLEbytheendoftheyear.ItwouldkeeptheirgoalRELEVANTaswell.ThetwodecidedtomakethedeadlinefortheirgoalinDecembertokeepitTIMED.
