Kindergarten Registration Coming In May If you plan to enroll your child in kindergarten in the fall of 2016, please plan to attend our Kindergarten Round Up which will also include a "Move-Up Day" for all elementary grades. This day will be on Friday, May 13, 2016 and will coincide with elementary field day like it did last year. During this time Mrs. Kroll will answer any questions you may have about enrolling your child and will also discuss with you the logistics that go along with having a child in school at Exeter-Milligan. Mr. Sheffield, Superintendent, and Mrs. Judy Kassik, kindergarten teacher, will also be available to field questions you may have for them. Marilyn Pribyl, the school nurse, also gives a short presentation. More detailed information about this day will be sent out in the near future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Kroll.
Student Absences We are again asking that you notify the school by 8:45 AM if your child will be absent or late from school. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please send a note with your child prior to the absence. This is the most effective way for the school to monitor your child’s attendance. When your child is absent if we do not speak to you personally or if you do not send a note your child will be considered UNEXCUSED.

Tuff Stuff from the 50s and 60s
Students in 8th Grade English class are reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. As we read about Greasers and Socs, we are comparing our pop culture to the characters in the story. Some favorites are different, like drive-in movies and poodle skirts, while other favorites are still popular today. McDonald’s and A&W fast food chains first opened their doors in the 1950s, and the first Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line in the early 1960s.
I Love Lucy
by: Nick Hayek
I Love Lucy was a T.V. show which was on CBS from October 15, 1951 and ended on May 6, 1957. Known as probably the most popular T.V. show ever created, I Love Lucy is about Lucy, played by Lucille Ball, and Ricky Ricardo, played by Desi Arnaz, who get caught up with their neighbors in wacky misadventures. The one popular thing about the show was that Lucy and Desi were in an actual relationship before the show was made and continued through the show. Unfortunately, their relationship was very complicated and after getting married and having two kids, they divorced around the end of the show. But the show went on and what they created was one of the most iconic T.V. shows of all time. (Source: Wikipedia 2016)
1957 Corvette By Max Zeleny
The Old car that I find interesting is the 1957 Corvette. This car back then ran about 100,000$. This engine in this beast back then was a 283 making just over 270 horse. This car was a 4 cylinder manual 4 speed. They made these cars in many versions this is just the one that I like small and quick. They made this car in 8 different color types and they were all very pretty. This car is very pretty and is and old old car.
The Twist By Caleb Horne
The Twist was just one of multiple dance moves that came through in the 1950s such as: hand jive, stroll, and the box step. The Twist got the attention teens in the 1950s. The Twist was written by Hank Ballard 1959 but didn't get popular till 1960 when Chubby Checker performed it on American Bandstand. His single became a hit when it reached number one on the billboard of the hot 100.That is what I picked that was popular in the 1950s. (Wikipedia.org,2016)
McDonald’s
by Caitlin Murphy In the 1950s, fast food restaurants were becoming popular. One of these popular restaurants was McDonald's. McDonald’s started as a barbecue joint in San Bernardino, California. It was opened by brothers Dick and Maurice McDonald. Twenty-five different items were served by carhops. Eventually, the brothers
discovered that the majority of their profits came from the sale of hamburgers. They also concluded that people were interested in eating quickly. They developed an assembly line process for food, and the menu was condensed to hamburgers, milkshakes, and french fries. Burgers cost 15-cents, which was about half the cost of a burger at regular diners in that time period. The restaurant was successful, and by the early 1950s, the brothers had opened eight restaurants. McDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger by 1958. A lot has changed since Dick and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's, but one thing has remained the same. McDonald’s is still a popular, fast, and convenient fast food restaurant. The Hand jive By Anna Sluka
The Hand jive was a very popular dance in the 1950’s. It was so much fun for
everybody to do. The Hand jive involves a complicated pattern of hand moves and claps at various parts of the body. It is a very fast pace dance. The dance itself is like patty-cake but it is much more complicated. Some of the hand moves include thigh slapping, cross-wrist slapping, fist pounding, hand clapping, and hitch hike moves. The Hand jive was very popular. In 1957 filmmaker Ken Russell recorded the teenagers of Soho, London hand jiving. They were in the basement of a coffee bar. The coffee bar was call The Cat’s Whisker. This is where the hand jive was invented. There were any songs that went towards the hand jive. In April 1958 the label London released a song called “Hand Jive” by Bud Allen. And it was performed by the Belly Smith Group. The song describes the dance moves. Many more people wrote songs about the hand jive. A British group Don Lang and the Frantic Five wrote a song called “Ramshakle Daddy.” The Hand Jive was popular in States by Johnny Otis’s “Willie and the Hand Jive.” There were also other uses with the hand jive. It was in many movies. The one movie that it was really popular in was in the Broadway musical Grease. The song in the movie was called “Born to Hand Jive.” You can also do the hand jive while listening to the song “Hakuna Matata” from the movie “The Lion King.” And even beyond music the hand jive is used as a term used by some jugglers in reference to certain hand motions in the Mills Mess juggling pattern. The Hand jive has got to be one of the funnest dance moves ever!! (Wikipedia 2016)
