Hoops for Heart Event

On February 28, our 3rd - 6th graders jumped all over heart disease and stroke by participating

in Hoops For Heart. The students raised more than $2,800 for the American Heart Association, which

funds research, programs and education to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 4

killers.

Hoops For Heart is a program that promotes physical activity and heart health through playing

basketball. It is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE America-Society of Health

and Physical Educators. The students are shown here with the prizes they earned for their efforts in

fundraising. Troy Kallhoff raised $350 in support of the AHA and was the top fundraiser for E-M this year.

Congrats Troy and everyone who contributed to this great cause!!

VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE

These past few weeks have been rather interesting around the Sheffield household. In just

twenty-six (26) days (probably less by the time you read this), we will celebrate the graduation of our

youngest child. It seems like it was yesterday when Haylee made her district music contest debut, at

the ripe age of 3, in her Princess Jasmine costume, complete with purple dress-up heels (we did call

Brett to see if he had “temporarily” misplaced his sister.) And now, she will make her last appearance

as a high school student, but this time in her graduation gown. Hard to believe it has gone so quickly!

For the past twenty-one years, there has always been more than one Sheffield available on picture day.

Over the past year, I have been trying to convince myself that I am ready for this – ready to have an

empty house, the dreaded “empty nest”, and truly find out how compatible Karla and I really are. Trace

Adkins says it oh so well, “You’re gonna miss this…You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so

fast.” This all brings to mind three points I would like to share.

The first point is to remember where you have been. There is something to say about

experience. As a beginning teacher, I did not have that experience to draw on once I had my own

classroom. Everything was new to me and I had to experience the good with the bad. I soon discovered

what was taught in college was not exactly how it happened in real life. Over time, I was able to

recognize this and draw on my experiences to help ford the way.

However, this point also has a flip side to it. One could also take this as remember where you

came from. As Bon Jovi sings,” Who says you can't go home. There's only one place that call me one

of their own.” We must always remember where we came from. Those people, places and things have

shaped us into who we are today. Our experiences, where we came from, have helped guide us on our

fantastic journey and we must never forget that.

We must also remember who we are. One must never lose sight of who they are and what they

stand for. Each one of us has a central core of beliefs, beliefs that are developed from where we’ve

Page 12: Timber Tracks Exeter-Milligan Public Schools May, 2017 · 2017-04-25 · round-up and student registration day on Friday, May 5 at 8:30 a.m. at the Exeter site. New kindergarteners

been and our experiences. These core beliefs help guide us on our path in life. However, we must not

deviate from these core beliefs, these principles. Compromising these core principles will lead to

forgetting who we are and what we stand for. It will also deviate us from where we are going – it will

push us in the wrong direction.

Throughout all of this, we have to keep focus of where we want to go. The experiences that

we’ve had have helped shape our core, but we must have a focus in mind. This translates into goals.

We must always remind ourselves, “OK that’s fine, but where do I go from here. How does this help

me in MY future?” Without a clear focus of where want to go, we will be like petals in the wind –

blown about by forces we cannot control. This can also shake us from our core beliefs and lead to a

destructive path. As we go through life, each stage in our lives is a new chapter in our book. No matter

how tough it gets, we need to push through those tough times, keep our focus and maintain our course.

As we say goodbye to the graduating seniors (and my youngest – the princess of the family)

our overall goal has been to help set these young adults on that righteous path – helping them set a

translucent focus of where they want to go. We also want them to remember where they came from

and who they are. Seniors (and foreign exchange students) always remember, “Who says you can’t

come home?” I have enjoyed having each one in school and getting to know each as individuals. As

one of my college professors used to say, “Study hard.” I would like to add one point to that tidbit of

information - enjoy what life has to offer. Take the talents you have been given and expand on them.

Don’t do just enough to get by, do what it takes to get ahead. Be the leader of the pack – the view is

much better ☺

Thoughts for the month-

You will never leave where you are until you decide where you would rather be.

Love what you do; love why you do it; love who you do it with.
