Hurfords Factory and Plantation and Designer Woodworks Industry Visit. Year 11 and 12 Industrial Technology students enjoyed a day off site, touring local the timber industry. The staff at Hurfords allowed students a behind the scenes look at one of their local mills. The group was then taken to the Hurfords plantation at Warrazambil Creek to see the hardwood plantation that supplies the mill. Following a quick lunch students were able to see a older style timber mill at the Hurfords site. The staff, Les White and Jim Rankin, were very generous with their time and knowledge. After departing the plantation students visited a Designer Woodworks a custom hardwood joinery and fine furniture manufacturer led by Master Craftsman Garan Hale. Designer Woodworks uses traditional timber joinery to supply high end joinery for builders and architects. Designer woodworks took us on a tour of their new factory and gave us an insight into working with our local timber products from logs to finished furniture. Overall it was a long and hot day and Kyogle High students represented their school well and got a great introduction to the timber industry in our local area. Mr O’Meara

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Students and staff have settled into the 2020 school year. I congratulate the students in full school uniform and the positive message that this sends out to the community regarding the pride in being a student at Kyogle HS. Attendance At the last assembly, I spoke to students regarding our school Attendance Procedure. Under the Education Act (1990) all students between the ages of 6 and 17 must attend school everyday unless there is a justified reason supplied to the school within 7 days. The two most common ‘justified leave’ are sick or approved leave. In terms of sick leave, a medical certificate must be provided to the school for absences of three days or more. Approved leave relates to incidents such as a serious illness of an immediate family member or attendance at a funeral. An unjustified absence is unexplained or unacceptable such as shopping, haircuts, tired, family visiting etc. Some statistics relating to 13 years of Schooling 1 day a fortnight missing school = nearly 1.5 years 1 day a week missing school = over 2.5 years 3 days per week = nearly 8 years Or in terms of a years worth of schooling 1 day a fortnight = 4 weeks per year 1 day a week = 8 weeks per year 3 days per week = 24 weeks per year Extended leave/family holidays Application for Extended Leave and Certificate of Extended Leave forms are required when a student will be absent from school for more than 5 days. Families are encouraged to travel during the NSW school holidays. If travel outside this time is necessary, the family must apply for approval before hand through completion of Application for Extended Leave (available from the Front Office). If approved, a Certificate of Extended Leave form will be issued. Have a great fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. Across Term 1 our PBL focus is on transition to class and movement around bubblers. This focus aims to maintain smooth movement to class so that students arrive on time and ready to learn. Our PBL expectations around these two settings are: Bubblers
Transition
I encourage parents and carers to discuss these expectations with their student(s) especially using bubblers at break times and moving quickly and quietly to class to maximise educational and engagement opportunities.

VACCINATIONS NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM: Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.
In 2020 the following vaccines will be offered: Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:
• read all the information provided
• complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
• return the completed consent form to their child’s school
• ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic. Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses dur-ing Year 7 or 8 (for HPV and DTP vaccination) and during Year 10 or 11 (for Meningococcal ACWY vaccination). Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/ Pages/withdraw_consent.aspx.
A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card or a text message sent to the mobile number recorded on the consent form. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.

TAS
Students are in the swing of practical classes across TAS with many interesting activities taking place. In Year 12 Hospitality students have this week made a few different chicken salad dishes to share and taste test. Year 11 Hospitality students made fresh hommus and beetroot hommus which they compared to store bought varieties, before choosing one for their Avo on Toast recipes. Year 9 students in the Cooking Masterclass, are investigating bread from around the world and made ham and cheese scrolls. Year 8 and Year 7 Food Tech classes are learning about bees. Students created smoothies with banana and honey, after taste testing local honey varieties and our home made labneh cheese.

TAS continued.. In Industrial Arts students in Year 12 Industrial Tech Timber and Design and Technology are starting their major
projects. There are some interesting choices with designs this year. Students in Year 11 Construction have been
inducted into the program and are now learning about industry safety. In Miss Sutcliff’s Year 9/10 Metal class last
week students investigated metal art and had a lot of fun making crickets. Students used metal hand tools to bend
and shape some old forks to make some lovely metal art pieces. In Timber Technology Year 9/10 students have
finished their safety induction and are building a phone speaker.
Year 9/10 Metal
Students in the new Year 9 and 10 Furniture Design short course, are investigating types of timber and developing designs for their small stool furniture projects. Across TAS our elective subjects do have student contributions and we would appreciate if parents and carers can make payment through the Front Office for TAS subjects being studied. Year 8 Technology Mandatory Mixed Material class is working with textiles and making some beautiful bracelets with Miss McMillan. Year 8 Mandatory Technology classes rotate every Term throughout the year, covering four aspects of Technology over the year. 8 tech 2 has been investigating fibres and their first hands-on project was a Chunky bracelet using knotting and weaving techniques.

MEET THE TEACHERS
English Department My name is Annie Murray. I graduated as an English Teacher in 2008 and have been teaching in the Northern Rivers for the past ten years at various high schools in the area on temporary engagements.
This is my first year teaching at Kyogle High. So far the students have been a bright and bubbly bunch and the teaching staff are wonderfully fun and supportive. I look forward to my year working with everyone. That's me on the right! :) My husband and I love camping. This is us on Stradbroke Island with our kids.
FROM THE OFFICE Friendly Reminder. Please bring notes and money together to the Front Office for excursions and activities. Otherwise notes will be returned to the student to hand in when they have the money with it. This doesn't apply when the excursion/activity does not involve payment. Front Office
