Principal’s Newsletter Week 4, May 16 th As I have moved around the school this week I continue to be impressed with the settled way students are working. This focus and commitment are life long skills and students maximise their work time by approaching it with a can do attitude. I always look forward to seeing the quality work that students produce and hope to do a lot of that in the next few weeks as Principal (Relieving). This week we have been advised of two long awaited capital improvements. The front fence will be completed by the end of the term, with only a week of interruption to Elizabeth Street entries. I will write more about this when construction is about to start. We have also been advised that the sandstone trim on the library building will be sealed very soon, hopefully stopping the leak into the hallway. Stop Working Meeting ~ This Friday 18 th May: The NSW Teachers Federation has called for a two hour stop work meeting this Friday morning for up to two hours. The school will be operational but there will be no normal lessons from 9am 11am. Normal lessons will commence at 11am. Most staff have indicated they will be attending the stop work meeting. To support parents who have no other options for supervision, minimal supervision will be provided for students attending before 11am in the playground. Thank you for your support. Head Lice: There have been a number of cases of Head Lice reported in our school. It would be appreciated if you would check your child’s hair this evening and treat as necessary. If all the children are treated at a similar time then reinfestation from one child to the next can be minimised. We also ask you to check again in a few days to make sure we won’t have a continual problem. Please see pamphlet with this week’s newsletter for suggested treatments. NAPLAN: Testing of Year 3 and 5 students is well underway, students are to be congratulated on their focus and effort, keep it up. Opportunity Class Placement Test: Applications are open to apply for OC placement test for Year 4 students wishing to sit for this test. I encourage all parents to apply on-line. Hard Copies are also available at school for parents who don’t have internet facilities at home, alternatively we can accommodate parents here at school to make these on-line applications. Completed forms must be lodged by Friday 18th May. The test is scheduled for 25 th July. Sick Children at School: Recently we have had quite a few sick children being sent to school. In the

interests of all students and staff, if your child is sick please keep them at home to rest and recover.

10 Star Card Certificates: At Wednesday and Friday’s assemblies students will begin to receive their 10

Star Card Certificates as they achieve this benchmark. Parents are very welcome to attend our assemblies to celebrate with us. I am always very excited to see so many students awarded for great behaviour and for upholding our school rules. Well done boys and girls!

Child Protection Program: All our classes will be involved in specific child protection lessons throughout

this term and Term 3. These mandatory lessons are a part of the Health P.E and Personal Development key learning areas. Child protection is a developmental program that begins at pre-school and continues throughout high school. Child protection teaches our students protective strategies to enable them to distinguish between good and bad relationships and develop confidence to make good choices. Star Struck: The first rounds of rehearsals were held last week at the basketball stadium. The group are

working extremely hard with Miss Ragan to master the choreography of their particular dances. Miss Ragan is also working to complete some of the costumes needed. Our first sewing bee will be held on Friday 25th May. Can you come and help? We hope the lower hall is buzzing with the sounds of sewing machines and scissors! I want to acknowledge Miss Ragan’s wonderful enthusiasm and commitment in giving yet again the senior dance group this fantastic experience. It takes a great deal of in-school and out of school hours and resources to manage a Starstruck group. Thank You Miss Ragan and all the mums for your support, we are indeed lucky to have you!

Mothers Day and P&C: Thank you to our P&C members, who organised, assisted, wrapped, etc. for our

very successful Mother’s Day stall. The Quality of the gifts was exceptional. They were all wrapped and beautifully presented by helpers. Thank you to the many families who donated goods to make up these gifts.

PSP Debating Round One Competition Results ~ By Emma Jane Wasiak Last Monday, the 7th of May, we went over to Carrington Public school for our first PSP prepared debate of the year. We went in the library and practiced our speeches and then the other school came in and we met them then the debate began. We were lucky enough to have a Stage 3 audience from Carrington watch. We were victorious in our debate and we won based on our rebuts. The other team was well trained and had very good knowledge on the topic. Most of all everyone received great feedback and everyone had a good time. We look forward to the rest of the competition Regional Cross Country: Congratulations Gilbert Harabakunzi and Mitchell Hunt who participated in the Regional Cross Country in Week 3. They both ran extremely well and even though it was a very long and challenging track both students completed their event. Further congratulations to Mitchell who was placed 3rd, he will now go on to compete at state level, we are very proud of all of you.

K–6 Athletics Carnival ~ Monday 28th May: Today you will receive an information sheet and permission

note for the K-6 Athletic Carnival. This year the Athletic Carnival is a whole school event with a new venue, Number 1 Sports Ground, Newcastle West. K-2 will return to school at 12.30pm and Years 3-6 at 2.30pm. Please return permission note and money to school by Friday 25th May.

AFL Report ~ By Justin Leary On Thursday 10th May Tighes Hill PS Years 5/6 went to Bill Elliot Oval at Maryland and competed in the Paul Kelly Cup Regionals. Sadly they didn’t make it to the Grand Finals but with their super coach Mr Horadam, Miss Robinson and the mums who encouraged them and drove them there and back, they managed to win a game. For Tighes Hill PS, this is the second time in a row they’ve got to Regionals. In the end they won one game, lost two and had a lot of fun. Gymnastics

Sydney Writer’s Festival ~ Wednesday 23rd May: Next Wednesday 5H6 and 5M6 will travel to Sydney

to attend the Writer’s Festival at Sydney Town Hall. Students will depart from school at 6.10am sharp and return at approximately 4.30pm. All students must be in full school uniform, no exceptions. Have a great day!

Article from Newcastle Herald Tuesday 15th May

Featuring Brad Martin ~ 5/6H

Coach Stewart Bell has been with the team throughout the competition and said their best effort at the nationals was sixth in the first year. Bell said the side were excited about their trip to the Gold Coast, which has been made easier by a donation from Lake Macquarie businessman Andrew Poole.

The Newcastle Little League Representative side is building on a strong start for the region in the under 13 baseball competition. The 14 person squad took out the country division of the NSW titles last month in Nowra, winning three of their four games to finish top of the table and qualify for the national championships on the Gold Coast from May 24 to 27. They will be one of 17 teams vying for the Australian title and a place in the Asian division. The winners in Asia qualify for the Little League World Series in America. It is the fifth year of the Little League Series. Newcastle won the NSW country title the first two years but were eclipsed by Illawarra in the next two.

School Fun-Run

We will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on 1/6/12 within the school grounds. The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved. All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school SRC. The funds raised will be used to purchase reading books for the library and classrooms We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday in Disneyland! Students wanting to train for our event and to receive advice from sporting heroes like Scott Prince, Dale Thomas, Sally Pearson and other elite adidas athletes can do so by logging onto schoolfunrun.com.au/students and clicking create a profile. Students who register will be in the running to WIN a Nintendo Wii and bonus Wii Fit Plus! Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising! Tony Selwood & Prue Dickson SRC Co-ordinators

We would love to have more names on our roster so please contact us if you can help. We will be sending out a request soon for people to help at the Sports Carnival for an hour or 2 and to transport the food and drinks to the sports ground. If you think you may be available to help, keep an eye out for a note being sent home soon. The new menu is proving to be popular. There are lots of delicious items available, including toasted sandwiches, garlic bread and corn cobbettes to keep the kids warm at lunchtime.
