    Safety

It is important to know what safety equipment

is available to assure you are properly protected

    against the hazards of welding.

Ask, dont assume you are protected.

    Work Boots

    Leather work boots

    should be worn to

    prevent the welding

    slag and sparks from

    burning the feet.

    Lace them all the

    way and place pants

    over the tongue.

    An eye wash

station is availablein the shop and

    used whenever any

    contaminates enter

    the eyes.

When TIG welding certain materials, such asstainless steel or nickel alloys, it is necessary to

prevent the reverse side of the weld area oxidising, particularly in pipework when post-weld cleaning ofthe root is impossible. This is usually achieved bypassing a stream of inert gas through the pipe, orover the reverse side of a plate, to exclude, or purge,

oxygen from the area. The gases most frequently used for purging areargon or nitrogen. Which gas is chosen will dependon technical, practical or economic reasons.
