DIAMONDS (continued): •Althoughdiamondsare58timesharderthan the next hardest mineral on Earth, they are quite brittle and can be shattered by the single blow of a hammer. And if a diamond is placed in anovenatatemperatureof1405°F(763°C),itwill disappear without leaving so much as an ash behind. •About250tonsofearthmustbeminedto produce a single one-carat diamond. Over 130,000,000caratsweighing57,000lbs.(26,000kg) of diamonds are mined every year – a value of about $9 billion. • Of all the diamonds to be found onEarth, only 20% of them are suitable for jewelry. The majority of diamonds are used for industrial drilling, grinding, cutting, and polishing tools. Diamonds are embedded into drill bits for drill-ing oil and gas wells through thousands of feet of rock. •Diamondswerefirstdiscovered inIn-dia, but most diamond deposits are found in Af-ricaandRussia.TherearesignificantdepositsinBrazil,Australia,andCanada,andinafewU.S.states,Arkansas,Colorado,Wyoming,andMon-tana. DIAMONDS (continued): •Adiamond’svalueisbasedonthe“FourC’s”–caratweight,clarity,color,andcut.Adia-mond’s carat is not the same as that of gold. Pure gold is considered 24 carats, while one diamond caratis0.007055oz.(200mg).Notalldiamondsare clear. The presence of impurities causes the gems to vary in color, as can heat or irradiation. Nitrogen in a stone produces a yellow color, while irradiation might produce green. Blue, red, brown, pink, orange, and even black might result from the presence of both irradiation and heat. Other popular cuts include the football-shaped marquise, the pear cut (which are rounded on one end with a tapering point on the other), and the emerald cut, a rectangular shape with cropped corners. • Although blue, green, and pink dia-monds are extremely rare, they are not the rarest gems. That honor belongs to the pure red ruby. DIAMONDS (continued): • The legendary Hope Diamond is a45.52-carat deep blue stone famous for a sup-posed curse upon its owners. Its blue color is at-tributed to trace amounts of boron and nitrogen within its composition. When exposed to ultra-violet light, it produces a red phosphorescence, a “glow-in-the-dark” effect. The curse alleges that the gem brings tragedy to all who own it or wear it, but it’s likely that the stories were fab-ricated to heighten the diamond’s mystery and consequently, its value. However, legend has it that two owners committed suicide, another was killedbyRussianrevolutionists, onemurderedbyher sweetheart, and another thrown from a preci-pice. At one point, the gem was in the possession ofMarieAntoinetteandherhusbandKingLouisXVI, who were guillotined. It’s believed that the Hope Diamond came from a mine in India, and was brought to Paris by a French gem merchant. It currently resides in the Smithsonian Institute, donated by diamond merchant Harry Winston in 1958. The irreplaceable gem is reportedlyinsured for $250million. It’s displayedbehinda3-inch-thick (76mm)bulletproofglass in itsown display room. •It’sbecometraditionaltopresentone’sintended with a diamond when proposing mar-riage. This dates back to 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gifted Mary of Burgundy with a diamond upon their engagement. It’s also customary to wear engagement and wedding ringsonthethirdfingerofthelefthand.Thisisbecause the ancient Egyptians believed that par-ticularfinger’sveinranstraighttotheheart.

An interesting study from the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania shows that eating "comfort food" to help a bad mood actually can worsen the mood that the food was supposed to allevi-ate. In a paper presented recently at the Ameri-can Psychosomatic Society conference in Mi-ami, researchers revealed that positive moods didn't change one way or the other before orafter eating comfort or junk food, but negative moods were made worse. While the study wasn't about seniors, and they used women participants who were much younger, the way they conducted the study makes me believe it easily could apply to seniors. Instead of having subjects appear at thecliniconceaweektoreportonwhatthey'deaten and how they felt, they were equipped with handheld computers to input their moods and foods multiple times per day, especially just before and after eating. In a study last year in the Public Health Nutrition journal, researchers revealed that people who ate junk or comfort food were more likely to be depressed -- by 51 percent. Themore junk food, the more depression. One of the biggest concerns about se-niors and junk food (and fast food is included) is that many of us have smaller appetites than before. Maybe it's because food doesn't tastelikeitdid, ormaybeamedicationwe'reonhasreduced our appetite. Many seniors are at risk for malnutrition even if we're never hungry, becausethetypesoffoodweeatdon'tsupportgood nutrition. If we turn to junk food, we might not have enough appetite left to eat the foods we should. And if we eat to help a bad mood, we could be making it worse.MatildaCharlesregretsthatshecannotpersonallyan-

Why Not Stop Pain? The American Pain Foundation reports that more than 80 million Americans suffer from pain related conditions. Why should we not do everything we can to resolve this? The most prevalent are neck and back pain, pain from arthritis and other joint, bone or mus-cular disorders, post-surgical problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, digestive distress(suchasIBS,colitis,Crohn’sdisease,etc.)–thelistgoeson. The typical remedy is to suppress pain using medications which cover up the problem. In some cases the pain is intractable because of the nature of the injury, but many times alleviation of the causative factor is more appropriate. Inotherwords, ifyouhavediscomfortduetoheartburnorrefluxorpainfrommoreseriousdigestivedisorders, itwouldbemoreappropriatetocorrectthereasonWHYyouhaveadigestivechallenge rather than cover it up with acid stopping medications or corticosteroids. Many people don’t realize this is possible because they see their conventional doctor, not realizing they are trained to manage their health crisis, not to heal their disease. Seeking the services of a natural health care provider such as an acupuncturist, who is trained to seek resolution of the health condition generally brings the desired results for those wishing to avoid or lessen medication usage. Acupuncturehasbeenstudiedextensivelyforitsuseinhelpingpainfulandinflammatoryconditions.Stimulatingcentersinthebrainandhormonesfromglandsthatsecretetheanti-inflam-matory hormones, the body is able to use its own inherent system we are born with to handle the injury or functional issues.
