NOW, THAT’S CORNY! (continued):• About 40 percent of the world’s corn is grown

in the United States. Over half of the U.S. corn grows in four states: Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota. The “Corn Belt” in the United States is typically defined as the above four states plus Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Kansas. The corn-growing region has relatively level land, adequate rainfall and rich, fertile soil.

• For the last two decades Iowa has produced the largest corn crop of any state. Actually Iowa produces more corn than most countries. For example, Iowa grows about three times as much as corn as Mexico, even though the corn consumption per person there is almost three times higher than in the United States.

• Approximately 90 percent of the corn in the United States is grown on family farms. Irrigation is usually unnecessary, with 87 percent of the corn grown using only natural rainfall.

• There are five varieties of corn: 1) field corn, which is used for livestock feed, fuel and industrial products; 2) popcorn; 3) food-grade corn, used for numerous food products like corn bread and tortillas; 4) sweet corn, the best to eat; and 5) seed corn, grown for kernels to be used

for the next year’s crop. • Most things in nature that have rows or lines

tend to grow in even numbers. This comes about with cell division; one cell dividing into two and continuing evenly. Corn kernels always grow in an even number of rows. An average ear of corn has 800 kernels in 16 rows.

• One of the primary uses of field corn is animal feed. Approximately 40 percent of the U. S. corn crop is used as livestock and poultry feed.

• Included in this 40 percent is the production of distiller’s grain, a co-product from ethanol production that is a great supplement for animal feed.

• Another use of field corn is ethanol production. In 2010, 36.5 percent of the U.S. corn crop was used to produce ethanol. Ethanol is a clean alternative fuel that is blended with 70 percent of the gasoline produced in the United States and comprises about 4.6 percent of total U.S. gasoline consumption.

• Lastly, field corn is used for a variety of industrial products, including bioplastics, fabrics, crayons, compostable tableware and food containers.

• Popcorn has been part of American cuisine since before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. In fact, research indicates that likely ancestors of Native Americans enjoyed popcorn before the birth of Christ.

• Nutritionally, popcorn is a good source of fiber and complex carbohydrates yet low in fat and calories, making it a great between-meal snack. Air-popped popcorn contains 31

It’s not known who made the following sage observation: “Arguing about whether the glass is half-full or half-emp-ty misses the point, which is this: The bartender cheated you.”

The longest war in history lasted 335 years and resulted in exactly zero casualties. In 1651, the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly off Great Britain declared war upon each other, but nothing ever came of the conflict and it was soon forgotten. Finally, in 1986, the two combatants agreed to a peace treaty.

The world’s smallest mammal can be found only in Thai-land and Myanmar. Weighing about as much as a dime, Kitti’s hog-nosed bat is sometimes called the bumblebee bat due to its diminutive size.

You might be surprised to learn that an eagle can kill a young deer and fly away with it.

The Beatles was not the first band in which John Len-non played. Those previous groups obviously didn’t work out, though; in fact, at one point Lennon broke a wash-board over a bandmate’s head during a dispute. After the Beatles’ success, though, Lennon apologized in style: He bought the poor guy a supermarket.

Those who study such things say that armadillos can be housebroken.

At sea level, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. At the top of Mount Everest, though, the lower air pressure reduces the boiling point to 156 degrees.

If you recycle one glass jar, you’ll save enough energy to power a TV for three hours.

Thought for the Day: “The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.” -- G.K. Chesterton

Q: I haven’t heard much about the upcoming movie “The Lone Ranger,” starring my favorite actor, Johnny Depp. Please tell me that the movie is still being made and will be released! -- Pauli A., Colchester, Vt.A: The big-screen version of the small-screen classic -- star-

ring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger -- is on track for a July 3, 2013, release. The movie, which also stars Johnny’s “Sweeney Todd” co-star Helena Bonham Carter, ran into some delays earlier on due to rewrites, and more recently because of budgetary concerns. ***Q: I am so happy that “Leverage” has started a new season. Can you tell me what to look for this season? -- Geoff F., via e-mailA: I recently spoke with Beth Riesgraf, who plays Parker, the Leverage team’s resident thief, cat burglar, pickpocket and safe-cracker extraordinaire. Like you, Beth is excited for the action/dramedy’s fifth season, telling me: “All I can say is that there is a reason that we are in Portland, and there will be a payoff to that toward the end of the season.“For Parker personally, she’s in a good place. Now she’s able to be a part of something bigger, and she’s able to socialize. No one’s going to (mess) with her because she’s still got her edge, and she’s smart as a whip. I think she’s opened up socially and emotionally. Some of those boundaries have been let down and she kind of understands how to get along in society.”***Q: I really like the actor who plays Ben on TNT’s “Falling Skies.” Can you tell me more about him? -- Leanne W., Salem, Mass.A: Toronto native Connor Jessup -- who plays the middle son of Noah Wylie’s character, Tom Mason -- started acting at the age of 11 and counts among his loves directing, writing and producing along with acting. The 18-year-old stars in the big-screen drama “Blackbird,” which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, where he will be presented with the Toronto Rising Star Award (along with three or four other recipients).Connor is thrilled to be chosen as a Rising Star, and he told me: “TIFF means a lot to me. It’s a big part of my life. It was probably a main factor in influencing my love of movies and my discovery of film. I’m very honored to be chosen, especially since it’s my hometown, home festival. I’m looking forward to it.”***Q: I love the new “Dallas” -- it’s just what I’ve been missing from my regular TV lineup. Will it be back for another season? -- Gail W., via e-mailA: I wholeheartedly agree with you. I got chills as I watched the premiere episode and those familiar strains of the “Dallas” theme started up. TNT has indeed renewed the hit series. The network has ordered 15 episodes for its second season, which is scheduled to air in 2013.

• By the way, when popcorn pops, it forms two basic shapes: snowflake and mushroom. Movie theater and ballpark popcorn are snowflake-shaped because this form looks and pops bigger. Mushroom popcorn is used more for candy because it doesn’t crumble.

• Sweet corn differs from other corn varieties in that it is genetically distinct and accumulates twice the amount of sugar as field corn. The sought-after taste of sweet corn is best experienced by eating it directly off the cob. The Papoon variety of sweet corn, the first variety acquired by European settlers in North America, can be traced back to the Iroquois tribe of Native Americans in 1779.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Bernie” (PG-13) -- Jack Black stars in this odd-ly satisfying comedy with a twist of murder. Ber-nie Tiede (Black) is the nicest guy in Carthage, Texas. Bernie even puts effort into befriending the most reclusive person in town, Marjorie Nu-gent (Shirley MacLaine), a sharp-tongued wid-ow sitting on heaps of money. Bernie becomes involved with Marjorie as a companion and manager of her affairs. When her cruelty finally drives Bernie to shoot her four times in the back, nobody in town wants to blame him, except the district attorney (played by an oil-slick Matthew McConaughey). It’s not a gut-busting laugh riot, but a satisfying ride through accessible dark comedy. The per-formances of the three main actors bring just the right amount of quirk. Interviews with witnesses and town gossips fit right in with the movie’s quaint take on scandalous matters.

“The Dictator” (R) -- In the fictional North-Af-rican nation of Wadiya, supreme dictator Adm. Gen. Aladeen rules with a bejeweled iron fist. In a satire of Muammar Gaddafi and other au-tocrats, Aladeen lives in obscene luxury while tossing off one-liners full of anti-Semitism and hate for Western society -- except the celebri-ties he loves. This is the newest character from Sacha Baron Cohen, who previously brought praise and infamy with “Borat” and “Bruno.”“The Dictator” is entirely scripted, which ex-plains why it’s missing the edge of the last two films. It also tries to incorporate a romantic comedy aspect that pleases neither fans of Co-hen’s dark satire or fans of romantic comedies.

“A Separation” (PG-13) -- This drama from Iran is a stunner. It’s a gripping, real, relevant and touching story about a family falling apart. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband and daughter, but her husband won’t leave his ailing father suffering from Alzheimer’s. This means Simin is not allowed to leave the country. She moves in with her parents, and her husband hires a maid to help care for his father. Life takes a few twists, and the people who just wanted things to go back to normal have to hold together what they have left through rough times.

“Chimpanzee” (G) -- Disney knows how to produce a nature documentary. Sure, it’s more sympathetic than scientific. The result, howev-er, is an affecting look at another species, one that is intolerably fun to watch and also in peril. Narrated by Tim Allen, the film tells the story of Oscar, a baby chimp orphaned in the jungle. In true Disney fashion, the visuals are stunning, the story can reel in kids and adults, and the 77 min-ute runtime is backed with many adoring sighs of “Aaawww.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to tem-per that spurt of “Ram”-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision to move.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the uncondi-tional love and support of friends and family.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a new in-fusion of creative energy sets in by week’s end.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to be more flex-ible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it’s on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Listen to them.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might think you’re not getting the royal treatment you deserve. But be careful not to become a royal pain by complaining about it. Be patient and allow things to work out.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch that pen-chant for being super-judgmental at work. It might create a bad impression with someone whose deci-sions could determine the course of your career.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ve been your usual busy-bee self, gathering nectar wherever you can find it. But now’s a good time to kick back, relax and just enjoy smelling the roses.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That pes-ky personal situation seems to be improving. But change comes slowly, so be patient. Expect someone to bring more positive news by week’s end.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Whoa! Ease up on that hectic pace you’ve been put-ting yourself through. Take time to recharge your energy levels before going full gallop again.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Try to be intrigued, not intimidated, by the issues you’re sud-denly facing, and you’ll be ahead of the game. Don’t be afraid to demand answers to your questions.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New as-sociates freezing you out of their inner circle? Nev-er mind. Put a warm smile on that friendly face of yours, and you’ll soon thaw them all down to size.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your wise guid-ance helps colleagues agree to compromise and move forward. Meanwhile, there are still vital issues you need to deal with in your personal life.

BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being free with your emotions, but you also can exercise disciplined fo-cus. You would make a fine artist.

Lunchbox tip: Assemble your sandwich the night before (without veggies). Wrap in waxed paper and freeze. Add veggies and a condiment packet in a separate bag. Your sandwich will thaw by lunchtime and will stay cold!

“Plant banana skins in your garden, just below the sur-face. They rot quickly and provide nutrients for growing plants.” -- A.R.

“My girls get a little crazy with back-to-school clothes shopping -- they want everything! Before we go, we pull out all the clothes they have and assess their needs. We keep a count of shirts, skirts, shorts and pants so we don’t overbuy and have too many. They also make outfits out of what they have, so we can see if anything needs to be bought for that purpose. And undergarments and socks are replenished first, so they get included in the budget!” -- S.S.

“Always keep two needles threaded, one with black and one with white. When you have a rip, a button comes off or a hem comes out of your clothes, and you are in a hurry, you can use one of these for a quick repair.” -- J.R.

“This is a great tip for the upcoming school year. It’s hard to keep track of names of classmates anyway, but trying to remember who’s who from last year or the year before can be impossible. When class pictures come out, I make a photocopy and write the names of the children on the copy, right next to the child in the photo. I keep the photocopy handy throughout the school year and then file it away later with the actual photo. Our family has been doing this for almost 10 years, and it makes for great recall when looking back.” -- Y.O.

World.” Reportedly, 20 percent of the seed corn production in the United States occurs in greater Constantine and the surrounding counties.

• Food-grade corn comes generally as either white corn or yellow corn. Yellow corn is more prevalent, but with the swelling Latino population in the United States and the fact that white corn is preferred for Latino recipes (for example, Mexican tortillas), the demand for food-grade white corn is increasing.

• Corn is one of the most pervasive food ingredients in the world today. Consider this list of corn-containing foods that is significant but far from complete: baking mixes, baking powders, cornbread, corn flakes, Fritos, grits, hominy, margarine, popcorn, tortillas. Consider also the many non-food items that contain corn: aspirin, cough syrups, envelopes, gelatin capsules, powders, stamps, starched clothing, talcums, toothpaste, soaps and vitamins. Corn is actually an ingredient in more than 3,000 grocery products!

• There are many corn festivals across the United States, mostly in August and September. There are even some corn festivals in Canada. Probably one of the biggest and longest-running annual festivals is the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival in Mendota, Illinois. In its 65th year, the festival serves free corn that has been cooked “with the help of a vintage steam engine.”

NOW, THAT’S CORNY! (continued):

Running With Your DogDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I started my own fitness training about four months ago, and have done pretty well with daily runs. Now that my dog “Spir-it” is out of puppyhood -- he’s about 9 months old -- I’ve tried to take him along. But he didn’t seem too excited the first time we went running together. He stopped running and tugged on his leash back toward home after just half a mile. How can I get Spirit into running? -- Curt C., Boulder, Colo.

DEAR CURT: You’ve got to work Spirit up to it, just as you had to work your fitness upward. He gave a really clear signal that a half mile was his initial maximum distance; at that point it was time to take him home. Spirit is still very young to be out running, so don’t get discouraged by that first-day showing; just gradually increase the distance each day in small increments, take Spirit home, and finish your own run.Running with your dog can be rewarding, provid-ing companionship and even a measure of secu-rity. But keep your dog’s welfare in mind through-out the exercise. Heidi Ganahl of Camp Bow Wow offered some important tips for keeping your dog safe while running:--Don’t feed your dog less than 1 hour before or after running, to avoid the possibility of bloat.--Put sunblock on your dog’s nose on sunny days.--Make sure he drinks plenty of water before and after the run.--Check your dog’s feet after each run for injuries.--Avoid running in very hot, humid weather, as dogs can overheat quickly.--Place reflective gear on your dog and yourself if running in the evening or early morning.
