TIDBITS® TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

by Kathy WolfeThis week has been an eventful one over the years! Follow along as Tidbits investigates several happenings that have occurred during the first week of July.• Happy Canada Day! July 1 commemorates the

joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the province of Canada into a federation of four provinces, an 1867 event. This act created the Dominion of Canada, and July 1 was officially declared Dominion Day. It wasn’t until 1982 that the holiday’s name was changed to Canada Day, when the British Parliament relinquished all political rights over Canada. A five-digit code was assigned to every address across America, with the first number designating the geographical area, the second two digits identifying a regional center, and the last signifying which post office. THIS WEEK IN HISTORY (continued):• “Don’t you think a stereo cassette player that

you can listen to while walking around is a good idea?” Those were the words of Sony’s chairman Masaru Ibuka back in 1979. Ibuka traveled extensively and loved music and pitched the idea to company officials. On July 1 of that year, the Sony Walkman hit retailers’ shelves.

• The year’s midpoint occurs on July 2, with 182 days passed and 182 yet to come (except in Leap years, which have one extra day in the first half). On this day in 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were heard from for the last time as they attempted to make the first round-the-world flight. Their last contact was from the vicinity of Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.

• Chevrolet rolled its one-millionth Corvette off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on July 2, 1992. It was a white LT1 roadster with a red interior and black roof, carrying a price tag of more than $31,000. Another automotive milestone took place on this day in 2005, when the very last Ford Thunderbird was manufactured. The Ford plant at Wixom, Michigan, produced the platinum car with black interior. Employees of the plant signed their autographs on the inside fender panels, and the two-seater was given to the great-granddaughter of company

founder Henry Ford, Josephine Ford.• The Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg took place

July 1-3, 1863, the largest military battle in U.S. history. Confederate troops of 75,000 under Robert E. Lee met the 97,000 men of the Union Army commanded by George Meade in the small Pennsylvania town, population 2,400. By the end of the three-day conflict, more than 51,000 were dead, along with more than 5,000 horses.

It’s estimated that 569 tons of ammunition were used in the assault, and 634 cannons were positioned throughout the 25-square-mile area. The Confederates were defeated in the battle, but it was not to be the end of the war. It raged on for nearly two more years, although Lee’s army never recovered from the devastation.

• The U.S. Second Continental Congress met from July 1-4, 1776, in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall to debate, revise and adopt the Declaration of Independence. The document had been drafted by Thomas Jefferson, listing grievances against the King of England and breaking ties between the colonies and the mother country. Fifty-six men later signed the document, and it was read publicly for the first time on July 8.

• It somehow seems appropriate that two of America’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, should pass away on July 4. Jefferson, the nation’s third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, and John Adams, the second president, died within hours of each other in 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

• An announcement at the July 4, 1939, Yankees game saddened baseball fans across the nation. Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig stood before the crowd and announced his retirement from baseball after being stricken with amyotrophic

It was revered Chinese philosopher Confucius who made the following sage observation: “He who learns but does not think is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.”

If you ever have occasion to refer to an item that pertains to walnuts, it will be useful to have the word juglandaceous at your disposal.

It’s well-known that the United States is a melting pot of nationalities. At the end of the 1800s, New York City was so diverse that it had more Irish than any city except Dublin, and a larger Russian popu-lation than was to be found at that time in the city of Kiev. The only two cities in the world that had more German speakers were Vienna and Berlin, and Milan and Naples had fewer Italians than New York.

If you’re like the average American, you will eat 1.5 tons of food this year.

Beeswax candles are valued largely because they don’t drip as other candles do, but they’re also very durable. Archaeologists have found still-pliable beeswax candles in Egyptian tombs, and some have been recovered in good condition from sunken ships.

Iowa has the highest literacy rate in America.

In the grocery stores of today you might find a half-dozen varieties of apple, if you’re lucky. In centu-ries past, though, there were more than 350 variet-ies that were grown just for the purpose of making cider.

When paper currency is no longer in good enough condition to be circulated, it can be shredded and used in products such as shingles and insulation. You may have cash on your roof!

Q: When will my favorite show, “Leverage,” be back with new episodes? -- Paul T., via e-mailA: The premiere of season five of the hit TNT show will be Sunday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This year brings 10 all-new episodes starring your favorite gang of thieves, grifters

and con artists led by Academy Award-winner Timothy Hutton, along with Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf and Aldis Hodge. This season promises to deliver high action and intrigue -- and maybe some more romance -- as well as big-name guest stars, such as Cary Elwes and Treat Williams.

***

Q: Is it true that Matthew McConaughey finally tied the knot? -- Tina R., via e-mailA: Lustful ladies all over the world had to give up the dream of becoming Mrs. M. in early June, when Mat-thew married longtime girlfriend -- and mother of son Levi, 3, and daughter Vida, 2 -- Camilla Alves in an inti-mate ceremony at the couple’s home in Austin, Texas.

***

Q: What’s next for the beautiful Andie MacDowell? It seems I see her only on hair color/make-up commercials anymore, and I really miss seeing her in movies. -- Brit-ta, Fairview, Mich.A: Andie just started production in mid-June on the new Hallmark Channel original series “Cedar Cove,” which is based on the best-selling book series of the same name by Debbie Macomber. Andie will star as Judge Olivia Lockhart, whose Cedar Cove Municipal Court is the professional milieu and social microcosm of issues the judge will face in her own day-to-day life with family and friends. The series kicks off with a two-hour pilot, scheduled to air at the end of the year, with a weekly one-hour series to follow in early 2013.

Readers: For your summertime reading pleasure, I want to give one lucky reader a copy of Rebecca Bloom’s “Eat, Drink and Be Married.” Simply e-mail me at [email protected] or send a letter to Cindy Elavsky, King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Or-lando, FL 32853-6475 by July 31, and tell me your favorite beach read. This contest isn’t just for the ladies, although many beach books are classified as “chick lit.” I asked Rebecca if it bothered her to have books pigeonholed as “chick lit.” She told me: “I was offended by it before, but because I thought, ’Why does it have to be classified?’ But now I’m much more of a realist than when I started writing, and you have to do whatever you can to market your book. It’s a way to classify and sell, and ultimately, that’s what any writer should want. So, I’m not as against it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with cel-ebrating women with your writing. ’The Help’ was awesome, and that was a chick flick and chick lit, so if my book is classified as chick lit, that’s fine with me.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Hunter” (R) -- Willem Dafoe plays a grizzled gun for hire sent on a hunt for the elu-sive Tasmanian tiger. In the Tasmanian wilder-ness, he stays in a run-down old house with a family that also is in search of the supposedly extinct tiger. Deep into the jungle, Dafoe realiz-es that the shadowy organization that sent a lone gunman across the world to bring back DNA samples from a rare animal could have hidden motives and might even be untrustworthy. The plot can get as dense as the jungle, mak-ing it hard to appreciate what’s going on. Like a real hunting trip, much of the time is spent on getting there, setting up and then waiting. It’s not an intense thrill ride, and the plot can get in the way of the character’s journey. But although “The Hunter” can be hard to get into, it’s not your common fare.

“Treasure Planet” (PG) [Blu-ray] -- This ani-mated Disney adventure originally hit theaters in 2002 without making much of a splash. Now on Blu-ray, this science-fiction reimagining of the classic “Treasure Island” story has another chance to wow audiences. You see, since 2002, attitudes have supposedly changed about pirates, and the movie’s main voice actor, Joseph Gordon Levitt (“Inception” and “500 Days of Summer”), has become more of a rising star. The movie’s combination of hand-drawn and computer-generated animation should hold up pretty well under the light of the Blu-ray.

“God Bless America” (R) -- Frank (Joel Mur-ray) is a bitter, sad, divorced and dying man, and he’s our hero in this film. In his bleakest mo-ment, Frank finds comfort in killing reality tele-vision stars and other obnoxious jerks. Teenage Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr) is just as misanthropic, and admires Frank’s initiative. The two team up for one big road trip and killing spree against the brain-dead denizens of pop culture. So it’s a dark kind of comedy. The kind of comedy where you’re supposed to laugh when somebody gets killed for being annoying, feel bad about it for a second, then laugh at the next thing. The outrage and indignation behind the script can get a little overbearing. Certainly not for everyone, but worth checking out when you feel like you’ve had enough with the pop culture sideshow.

“Jesus Henry Christ” (PG-13) -- This movie may be too quirky to live. Wonder-kid Henry James Herman is 10 years old and already wants to go to college. When little Henry starts asking his single mother about the identity of his father, two families are pulled together into a vortex of uncomfortable, cutesy weirdness. Even lovers of the odd and eccentric might find this one to be just too forced.

A new TV show called Get Stuffed for the OLN network recently was at Luscious Creations Bakery in Port Coquitlam filming people tast-ing a new product called ManCakes.ManCakes are basically cupcakes for men, with names like Rum & Coke, Buffalo Wing, King Kong these are know ordinary cupcakes. I Da-ryl Aikin sampled the Rum & Coke cupcake and was interviewed on camera by the Get Stuffed TV crew and asked what I thought about the flavor and the name ManCakes. Check out my response to these questions when the episode airs in ten weeks on the OLN network.ManCakes is the brainchild of Geoff & Jeremy two guys trying to right the wrong that has been done to cupcakes. They decided to create some very wild ingredients to satisfy there male taste buds and start a new business adventure. With

that in mind they needed someone to make there yummy ManCakes. After being turned down by several bakeries to bring there cupcakes to life, one said sure why not and that would be Nathalie and Victoria at Luscious Creations in Port Coquitlam. This has now turned into a great business partner-ship between ManCakes and Luscious Creations. ManCakes are available online at www.mancakes-bakery.com they will also be available in store at Luscious Creations soon, call them for more infor-mation at 604 464-4668 or online at www.lusciou-screations.ca

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be prepared to face some challenges stirred up by an envious colleague. Your best defense is the Arian’s innate honesty. Stick with the truth, and you’ll come out ahead.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sensitivity to the needs of others is admirable. But be careful to avoid those who would take unfair advantage of your good nature, especially where money is involved.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Having an optimistic attitude is fine, as far as it goes. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of confidence. There are still prob-lems to deal with before you can totally relax.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel some-what “crabby,” as you fuss over plans that don’t seem to work out. Maybe you’re trying too hard. Ease up and let things happen without forcing them.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Heed that keen Leonine instinct. It’s trying to tell you to delay making a deci-sion until you’re sure there are no hidden problems that could cause trouble later on.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to reach out to those who might be nursing hurt feelings over recent events. Best advice: Ignore any pettiness that could delay the healing process.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your under-standing helps a colleague get through a difficult pe-riod. Although you didn’t do it for a reward, be as-sured that your actions will be repaid down the line.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You score some high marks in the workplace, which will count in your favor when you face the possibility of chang-ing direction on your current career path.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your goal lies straight ahead. Stay focused on it and avoid distractions that could throw off your aim and cause potentially detrimental delays.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Keep that burst of exuberance in check and resist pushing through your new project before it’s ready. In your personal life, a family member again needs help.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Paying at-tention to your work is important this week. But so are your relationships with those special people in your life. Make time for them as well.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news. Someone is about to repay a long-standing debt. But be warned. That same someone could try to charm you into lending it back unless you say no and mean it.

BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to matters that involve your home and family. You would make a fine family-court judge or social worker.

Save the rubber bands from broccoli. You can put them around the body of a drinking glass so it will be less slippery as water condenses on it.

“I save the wrappers from my unsalted butter sticks in a baggie in my refrigerator. I use them to grease a pan when baking.” -- M.M.

Corn is best cooked within a day or two of be-ing picked, so farm-stand corn is the best. Add a little bit of milk to the cooking water, and it will bring out the natural sweetness.

Cherries are in season! Much like strawberries, they need to be kept refrigerated but taste best at room temperature. Before eating your cherries, let them sit out for about a half-hour. Mmmmm.

Dried lentils don’t need to be soaked prior to cooking like other dried beans. And they’re packed with protein.

Confronting a Rude Dog-Park Denizen

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our town has des-ignated a small park near my home as a place where dogs are allowed. It’s not an official dog park, and because it also has a playground at one corner, many of us who visit have agreed that, if children are present, our dogs will be on leashes so as not to cause a problem. We’ve found the best way to allow our dogs to run free is to show up very early, when kids aren’t pres-ent. And we pick up after our dogs so the park remains a pleasant place for all.But there’s one person who doesn’t respect this agreement. He lets his dog poop wherever and never picks up after it, brings his dog at all hours and lets it run off the leash when kids are around. Is there anything we can do to stop this? -- Naomi in Newton, Mass.

DEAR NAOMI: Have you approached him di-rectly? If he doesn’t know that you and other fellow dog-owners have set up unwritten rules on managing the dogs’ conduct, he won’t know about the leash rule you’ve established. Remind him that it’s good manners and common sense to pick up after his dog, particularly in a park where kids run and play. In many communities, it’s a ticketable offense not to pick up after your dog.If he ignores the request, make it again. Ex-plain that the rules were put together in order to keep the park open to dogs -- if there are too many complaints, the city could ban pets from the park. If you can’t convince him, your group may have to form a more official club with writ-ten rules, in order to negotiate with both the city and boorish dog owners.

Drag Racing Flashback: Jungle Jim & Jungle PamAny look back at 70s F/Cs has got to begin with "Jungle Jim" Liberman from West Ches-ter, PA. One of the top all time crowd pleasers and showman in drag racing, Jungle's de-mand was such that at one time he had to field 3 funny cars scattered all over the country to cover his bookings. While not remembered as a frequent national event winner, the first "official" NHRA F/C win (69 Winternationals) was recorded by Clare Sanders driving JJ's #2 car. JJ's only NHRA national event victory came at the 75 Summernationals (although JJ did win numerous AHRA flopper shows). Super Stock & Drag Illustrated said of him "He never won a World Championship. He would often arrive late at booked-in races. He would give track owners heart failure... but he would fill the stands with fans from coast to coast... they adored the harmonica playing kid from Pennsylvania."
