America is a country full of would-be inventors. For most, it’s as simple as discovering a problem that no one’s ever solved and coming up with a creative and inexpensive solution. Here are just a few of the countless TV marvels that have been advertised on our sets since this phenomenon began. •A good example of the whole “discover a

of her glasses for about a year. She traveled to several foreign countries with it in, and people would literally stop her on the streets and ask her where she got this charm,” said Tedeschi. “Mymomcametomeandsaid,‘Youhavetoinvent charms for glasses.’”

• ForTedeschi,inventingthe“Snap-ItScrew”wastheeasypart.Thedifficultpartwasdoingall the things necessary to produce and market her new invention. She had to set up patents all over the world. She had to set up a factory in ChinaandawarehouseinSeattle,Washington. She had to spend countless hours marketing her idea to retailers. Today, the “Snap-ItScrew”isasuccess,andTedeschisaysthatdespite all the hard work, she wouldn’t change a thing.

• “BlingToGo”wasinventedbyAbbyAppeltduring a period where she was forced to use crutches. She felt the dull metal could use a littlepizzazz.Soshecreatedsomedecorativewrap-on decals to give her crutches some

personality, and her invention was born.•Appelt said, “When Iworemycrutchdécor,I had people stopme, literally everywhere Iwent, complimenting me on how awesome my crutches were!”

•As Appelt notes, people decorate a milliondifferent things with stickers, so it made sense to do likewise with crutches.

• “Bling To Go” works on crutches, canes, walkers and bed poles. It’s a medical gradeproduct thatcanbesanitizedandcleaned, soit presents no health hazard to the user.Thecompany’s slogan is “express your health,”and they back up their words by being active contributors to several physical and emotional health charities.

• Perhapsoneofthemorepeculiarandinnovativecreations making the invention circuit is the “Bogdon Bass.” It’s a standing bass guitarwhose main component is a cardboard box!

• The “Bogdon Bass” is literally a largecardboard box sealed with tape, with a wooden neckandvinylstrings. Itcanbeplayedwithorwithoutanamplifier.Becauseoftheuseofthese materials, it is lightweight, inexpensive and recyclable.

•This peculiar instrument was invented byaman namedChrisBadynee. He named theinstrumentafterhisfather,Bogdon.

• “TheinspirationtomakemyBogdonBoxBasswas that I had the desire to own somethingthatIcouldn’tafford,soImadeonemyself,”explained Badynee. “All I wanted was anatural-sounding upright bass for my own homerecordingsofsongsIwrote.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Five-Year Engagement” (R) -- Jason Se-gelandEmilyBluntstarinthischarmingroman-ticcomedyaboutmoderncouplehood.ItstartswhenSegelproposestoBluntbytheSanFran-cisco bay, and everything is great. Then she gets accepted into a prestigious academic program inMichigan,sotheweddingisputonholdandmovedtotheMidwest.Andfromthere,thede-lays and little surprises keep on coming, and the length of the movie extends to over two hours. Segel is proving himself a formidable writer/star. He plays the loveable goof like he was born forit.Bluntisadorableandhasnotroublewithon-screenchemistry.Chemistryseemstocometo her so easily she might as well be hydrogen. Ifyoucanhandletheruntimeandgetpastthesaggingmiddlesection,“TheFive-YearEngage-ment” just might pay off.

“Safe” (R) -- Jason Statham is right where he needs to be on this one -- a get-what-you-paid-for straightforward action flick that delivers.Thistimehe’sabeaten-downcagefighterwhoranafouloftheRussianmafiaandlosthisfam-ily.Whenhenoticesthegangsterswhoruinedhis life are attacking a little girl, Statham springs into action without knowing the whole story.Thisisthepastawithmeatsauceofactionflicks-- nearly impossible to mess up. The recipe is simple:Awashed-up tough guy protecting an

innocent from the pointless cruelty of an evil or-ganizationmustshoot,punch,driveandgrimacehiswaytoredemption.Ifit’sarentalactionflickyouwant,knowthat“Safe”livesuptoitstitle.

DOG OF THE WEEK“Piranha 3DD” (R) -- A sequel to a painfully unfunny self-parody from 2010, this gorefest has about as much wit as the breast joke in its title. Once again, a bunch of annoying young people clamoring for a party by a body of water are ex-posed to an army of hungry, computer-generated piranhas. Too many winks at the audience and not enough talent behind the camera make this wannabe shocker an irredeemable waste of time.

“Re-Animator” (R) -- For a reminder of what a ghastly horror comedy can be, check out this re-releaseoftheclassic1985thriller.Basedona short story by H.P. Lovecraft, master of chills, this flick injects deadpan humor into a storyaboutasciencegonewrong. Dr.HerbertWestinvents a serum that can bring dead tissue to life, but his breakthrough is taken over by his corrupt superior, who uses it on himself.

The best way to cook leafy, green veggies such as spinach and kale is to stir fry them in just the water leftover from rinsing. Itworksverywell to steamthem, and adds no fat!

Keep trackof thecapacityanddimensionsofyourcookware by using a permanent marker to notate the specificationsonthebottomofeachofyourbakingcontainers. This way, when a recipe calls for a 13-by-9 baking dish or a two-quart casserole dish, you can easily tell which one you need. This is especially important if you don’t spend a lot of time cooking.
