FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

WRIGLEY FIELD Home of the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field is located in the heart of downtown Chicago and is one of baseball’s most old-fashioned and famous ballparks.• Built in 1914, Wrigley Field will be going on its

99th season in 2012 and its 97th year with the Cubs.

• Wrigley Field is the second oldest major league ballpark in the United States, following behind Boston’s Fenway Park built in 1912.

• Wrigley Field seats 41,160 people.

• Originally named Weeghman Park in honor of the original owner Charlie Weeghman, it was designed by architect Zachary Taylor Davis and cost $250,000 to construct. It originally sat 14,000.

• On April 23, 1914, the first major league game took place at the ballpark, where the Federals defeated Kansas City 9-1.

• In 1915, the Federal League folded for financial reasons, making way for the Cubs to leave Cincinnati for Chicago.

Wrigley Field (Continued):• The bleachers and scoreboard were

implemented in 1937; the original scoreboard remains intact today and is manually operating. It has never been struck with a batted ball.

• A longtime tradition is the flying of a “W” or “L” flag atop the scoreboard at the conclusion of every game signifying either a win or loss.

• Wrigley Field has seen many firsts: the first permanent concession stand and the beginning of the traditions of allowing fans to keep foul balls and throwing back home runs hit by the opposing team.

• Wrigley Field has also seen many classic moments in baseball history, including the famous pitching duel in 1917 between Jim “Hippo” Vaughn and the Cincinnati Reds’ Fred Toney.

• The most famous incident to take place at Wrigley Field is Babe Ruth’s alleged “call shot” in the 1932 World Series, where Ruth pointed toward the outfield just before nailing a home run into the bleachers.

• Wrigley Field is more affected by harsh wind conditions than any other Major League ballpark because of nearby Lake Michigan.

• The park’s nickname is the Friendly Confines, and it is the last standing Federal League ballpark.

• The Cubs, often referred to as “The Lovable Losers,” are famous for never winning a World Series at Wrigley Field, yet they are still one of the most successful franchises in baseball history.

• The famous “Da Curse of the Bill Goat” dates back to 1945 at the fourth game of the World Series between the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. William “Billy Goat” Sianis and his goat Murphy were removed from the game because of the goat’s odor, and an angered Sianis placed a curse on the Cubs that said they would never win a championship. The Cubs lost game four, the World Series and have not won a World Series since.

A WORLD OF ADVENTURENorth America obviously doesn’t corner the market on men and woman of courage and adventurous spirit. Here are a few of the more interesting recent examples of our fellow explorers across the globe.• Alastair Humphreys of the United Kingdom has

ridden his bicycle over 46,000 miles in various locales around the world. Humphreys did this before he was 35 years old. He has also crossed Iceland’s glacial highlands entirely on foot and is planning what will be the longest journey to the South Pole ever attempted without support.

• After travelling nearly everywhere on the globe, Humphreys decided to see more of the country of his birth. He spent all of 2011 in Great Britain. He completed an ambitious group of “microadventures,” beginning and ending these trips at the front door of his home outside London.

It was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who made the following sage observation: “No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens.”

If you are a stay-at-home mom, you probably won’t be surprised by a recent study that found lower lev-els of stress in mothers who work outside the home than in those who stay with their kids all day.

George Reeves is best known for playing the title role in the 1950s TV show “Adventures of Super-man.” The role was a risky one, though -- not in front of the camera, but during his numerous public appearances. It seems that fans wanted to test the strength of the Man of Steel, so they often kicked and punched him. At a 1953 appearance in Detroit, one boy pulled out his father’s loaded .45 Army Colt and aimed it at Reeves’ chest. By telling the boy that the bullets would bounce off his own chest and ricochet into the crowd, harming others, Reeves managed to get the boy to put the gun down.

Though unenforced (and likely unenforceable), there is a law on the books in Tennessee that bars atheists, preachers and duelists from holding elect-ed office.

Are you lissotrichous? If you don’t have curls in your hair, you are. Of course, you may not be able to tell if you are atrichous (bald), a condition that may be caused by trichotillomania, the compulsion to pull out your own hair.

If you’ve been married for 40 years or more, you can be pretty confident that the union will last. Only 1 in every 1,000 marriages of such duration end in divorce.

Q: I can barely stand the wait -- when will “Pretty Little Liars” be back? -- Sissy R., via e-mailA: The third season of the hit ABC Family series “Pretty Little Liars” will be back and raring to go on Tuesday,

June 5, at 8 p.m. The series picks up with Aria, Emily, Spencer and Hanna dealing with the fact that Mona is the mysterious “A” who’s been blackmailing them. While the character died in the book series on which the TV series is based, actress Janel Parrish, who plays Mona, has been upgraded to a series regular and will play a bigger role in the upcoming season. However, just because Mona’s been outed as “A,” it doesn’t mean she murdered Allison -- that culprit is still on the loose.***Q: My family has been waiting anxiously for the season-three episodes of the “Downton Abbey” series to be aired. Our rela-tives in Europe have already seen the latest continuing episodes of the popular British series. Can you tell us when we can expect season-three episodes to start here in the U.S.? -- Tom S., Hart-ford County, Conn.A: Your European relatives might be confusing season two with season three, as season three is still in production. While Europe will get to see the third season before us -- it’s scheduled to air on ITV in England in September, and here in America on PBS in January 2013 -- I can guarantee you that, as of now, they haven’t seen any more than you have. ***Q: I’m a big fan of Scott Aukerman, and I especially love his podcast, “Comedy Bang! Bang!” I heard that it is going to become a TV series. Is that true? -- Jonathan V., via e-mailA: You heard right! Writer/comedian Scott Aukerman -- who is best known for his work with “Mr. Show with Bob and David” and for co-creating “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis” -- will indeed be bringing his hilarious podcast to the small screen. IFC has picked up “Comedy Bang! Bang!” which premieres Friday, June 8, at 10 p.m.To gear up for the show -- which will feature such big-name stars as Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks -- go to ifc.com/fix/2012/05/reggie-watts-makes-music to see Jon Hamm show off his freestyle skills on an improvised jam about the classic TV show “Taxi.” And check the website often, as new webisodes will air throughout the season.***Q: In my opinion, the fourth season of “Southland” was the best yet. Please tell me it’s been renewed for another season! -- Matt F., Sacramento, Calif.A: It would seem that the powers that be at TNT agree with your assessment of “Southland,” as they have renewed the hit cop series for a 10-episode fifth season, which is scheduled to begin airing in February 2013. As the date gets closer, I’ll be sure to fill my readers in on all the details.

PHOTO: Tilda Swinton in “We Need To Talk About Kevin”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Man on a Ledge” (PG-13) -- A man stands on the ledge of the 21st floor of a hotel, but his goal isn’t to jump. No, it’s a far more convoluted plot in which disgraced ex-cop Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) says he’s out on a ledge to prove he’s not the diamond thief everyone thinks he is. Already we have the key ingredients to a luke-warm thriller: a story built around a suspense-building gimmick and gem thievery. While Worthington stands out there talking to the police negotiator (Elizabeth Banks), a young couple (Jamie Bell and Genesis Rodriguez) are pulling a high-tech heist. The movie fails to build much suspense, as the audience knows that Worthington is going to be on a ledge until the other plots advance far enough to give us the twist.

“Coriolanus” (R) -- Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in this bold adaptation of one of Shake-speare’s plays. The lines are the same, but the setting has been updated to a modern landscape of urban warfare. Caius Martius (Fiennes) is a Roman war hero who comes home with a thou-sand-yard stare. His mother, Volumnia (Vanes-sa Redgrave), pushes him into politics, but the people of Rome reject Caius as a warmonger. Caius then teams up with his nemesis, Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler), to take revenge on Rome.Fiennes just radiates that he “gets” Shakespeare and wants others to see it the way he does. He also understands that a war movie needs heart-pounding action. The characters speak in iam-bic pentameter about the state of Rome, but the adaptation plunges the material into our world -- where war, politics, human nature and public opinion collide just like they always have.

“We Need to Talk About Kevin” (R) -- Imag-ine if your first child just plain hated you since the day he was born. Tilda Swinton plays a woman who puts her dreams aside to start a family, then gives birth to a son, Kevin, who is just impossibly cruel and creepy. Kevin’s fa-ther (John C. Reilly) is an affable sort who just doesn’t see it. This movie is unsettling. Rather unsettling. You might remain unsettled after the credits.

“Goon” (R) -- Seann William Scott plays Doug, a bouncer who wishes he had some-thing to be proud of. In a chance encounter at a minor-league hockey game, Doug leverages his only skill -- punching people -- into a career as a professional on-ice bruiser. This lowbrow sports comedy is genuinely funny for those who can handle the violence. You can’t help but love Scott’s true-blue underdog, misguidedly trying to impress his family one fistfight at a time.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might have to turn your Arian charm up a few degrees if you hope to persuade that persistent pessimist to see the possi-bilities in your project. Whatever you do, don’t give up.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A “tip” about a co-worker’s “betrayal” might well raise the Bovine’s rage levels. But before charging into a confrontation, let an unbiased colleague do some fact checking.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a relation-ship still seems to be moving too slowly to suit your expectations, it’s best not to push it. Let it develop at its own pace. You’ll soon get news about a work-place change.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A continually chang-ing personal situation makes you feel as if you’re riding an emotional roller coaster. But hold on tight; stability starts to set in early next week.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Believe it or not, some-one might dare to say “No!” to the Regal One’s sug-gestion. But instead of being miffed, use this rebuff to recheck the proposition and, perhaps, make some changes.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might find it difficult to make a decision about a family matter. But delay can only lead to more problems. Seek out trusted counsel and then make that important deci-sion.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Concentrate your focus on what needs to be done, and avoid frit-tering away your energies on less-important pur-suits. There’ll be time later for fun and games.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although the conflicts seem to be letting up, you still need to be wary of being drawn into workplace intrigues. Plan a special weekend event for family and/or friends.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your quick wit helps you work through an already difficult situation without creating more problems. Creative aspects begin to dominate by the week’s end.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be pa-tient. You’ll soon receive news about a project that means so much to you. Meanwhile, you might want to reconsider a suggestion you previously turned down.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There are still some aspects about that new job offer you need to resolve. In the meantime, another possibility seems promising. Be sure to check that out as well.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Opening up your emotional floodgates could leave you vulnerable to being hurt later on. Watch what you say, in order to avoid having your words come back to haunt you.

BORN THIS WEEK: You’re usually the life of the party, which gets you on everyone’s invitation list. You also have a flair for politics.

A World of Adventure (Continued):• Among his explorations in 2011 was a hike up the

M25, the well-known roadway that is notorious for having the worst traffic in the country. He also swam the Thames River, familiarized himself with the UK’s public transportation and spent several days living entirely off the land.

• Humphreys used social media to encourage his fellow adventurers to record video diaries of their own “microadventures.” Through Twitter, he received a surprising number of responses, some from as far away as Japan.

• Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner recently became the only woman to summit all 14 of the peaks worldwide that measure over 26,000 feet (8,000 m). She completed the staggering feat in 2011, besting the K2 near the border of China and Pakistan.

Want to pump up a dying charcoal fire? Never use lighter fluid. Even if the coals look really gray, they could be hot on the inside. The stream of fluid CAN catch fire. It’s too dangerous. Put new briquettes in with the old, and start those using a long stick match.

“When grilling with charcoal, keep a clean spray bottle filled with plain water handy, and use it to keep flare-ups from blackening your food. When the coals have died and you’re ready to clean up the ashes, mist the ashes first. It will keep them from making a dust cloud.” -- U.L. in Georgia

From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here’s a great tip to use when grilling chicken: “When ap-plying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it’s often hard to keep the rub affixed, and it’s even more difficult to keep the chicken’s original, golden color. Try ’paint-ing’ chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to ap-plying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- with-out any trace of mustard flavor.”

When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. This way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won’t af-fect the taste of the food.

To cover a picnic table in windy conditions, choose a fitted bed sheet. A kid-friendly alternative is to cover a table entirely with white butcher paper, taped at the seams and secured underneath with strong tape, such as duct tape. The kids can busy themselves drawing placemats and decorations for everyone in crayon while the adults do the grilling.

A World of Adventure (Continued):• Kaltenbrunner had nearly gotten the record in

2010 on the very same mountain. She was only 400 meters from the summit when tragedy struck. Her partner, mountaineer Fredrik Ericsson, slipped while climbing above her and tumbled below. Kaltenbrunner immediately abandoned her mission in an attempt to rescue her partner. Unfortunately, Ericsson’s injuries from the fall proved fatal.

• The tragic 2010 trip to K2 was Kaltenbrunner’s fifth attempt to scale the most dangerous peak on Earth. An infamous section of the K2 known as the “Bottleneck” claimed 11 lives in 2008 alone.

• Scottish bicyclist Danny MacAskill quit his job as a mechanic in 2009 so he could pursue riding full-time. Before, he would ride after work but felt he was falling short of his cycling dreams.

• In March of 2009, MacAskill had his roommate Dave Sowerby tag along and film as he performed a series of outrageous tricks around and across Edingburgh’s most famous landmarks.

• The video became a viral sensation, being viewed more than 27 million times!

• The feats that MacAskill performed on the video were so astounding that some viewers accused him of using special effects. MacAskill was inspired by the idea of creating physical puzzles using the landscape. His goal was to show how his bicycle could overcome seemingly impossible obstacles.

THE PATH OF A STARAmong the countless actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are an untold number of fascinating stories about how those men and women got there in the first place. Here are a few of the most interesting ones. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an actor (though

he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher certainly encouraged acting over his eventual day job. She told him that he had no “aptitude for singing.” Fortunately, he politely disagreed with her appraisal and became the best-selling recording artist of all time.

• Emmy-nominated actress Jane Lynch of the hit Fox show “Glee” got her first break from doing commercials for Frosted Flakes. She struck up

a friendship with the commercials’ director, Christopher Guest. Later he would cast her for big spotlight roles in his films “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind.”

• People strongly associate John Travolta with his starring role as Danny Zuko in the smash movie version of “Grease.” Yet five years earlier another future star played the same role in a theater production of “Grease.” He was a then little-known actor named Richard Gere.

• Before he became the blockbuster superstar we know from such movies as “Rain Man” and “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise considered a far different calling: priesthood. In fact, he told Parade magazine: “I looked at the priesthood and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’” Fortunately for Hollywood, he ultimately decided not to become “Father Cruise.”

• Before becoming the world-famous director of the two highest-grossing movies of all time, “Titanic” and “Avatar,” James Cameron drove a bus for a living.

• Long before winning an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in “Jerry Maguire,” Cuba Gooding worked as a back-up dancer for

On May 31, 1859, the massive clock-tower bell known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high St. Stephen’s Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time. Just two months later, however, the heavy striker cracked the bell.

On May 30, 1911, the inaugural Indianapolis 500 is run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. With the exception of a break in 1917 and 1918 for World War I and from 1942 to 1945 for World War II, the 200-lap, 2 1/2-mile race has been run every year.

On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson -- who will become known as the glamorous ac-tress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe -- is born in Los Angeles. During World War II, a photog-rapher “discovered” the naturally photogenic Norma Jeane while she was working in a Cali-fornia munitions factory.

On May 29, 1932, the so-called Bonus Expe-ditionary Force, a group of 1,000 World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their vet-erans’ bonus certificates, arrive in Washington, D.C. One month later, that number had swelled to nearly 20,000 strong.

On June 3, 1956, Santa Cruz, Calif., authorities announced a total ban on rock and roll music at public gatherings. Just two weeks later, Time magazine reported on similar bans enacted in Asbury Park, N.J., and San Antonio, Texas.

On June 2, 1967, Capt. Howard Levy, 30, a dermatologist from Brooklyn, is convicted by a general court-martial of willfully disobeying orders. Levy had refused to provide basic in-struction in skin disease to Green Beret medics, saying it would be used as a “tool of political persuasion” in Vietnam. He did 26 months hard labor and was dismissed from the service.

On May 28, 1987, Matthias Rust, a 19-year-old amateur pilot from West Germany, takes off from Helsinki, Finland, and travels undetected through more than 400 miles of Soviet airspace. After Rust landed his small Cessna aircraft in Red Square by the Kremlin, an American dip-lomat in the Soviet Union joked, “Maybe we should build a bunch of Cessnas.”

Dog’s Hair Isn’t Growing Back

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read your column on pet allergies. I have an English Setter that has had fleas and a skin problem. “Ladybird” has lost a lot of hair, and it doesn’t seem to be growing back. Can you give me some tips on getting her hair to grow back? Is medicine available for this? -- Edward S. Ow-ensville, Mo.

DEAR EDWARD: Hair loss can be symptom-atic of many conditions, not just in English Set-ters but many breeds. So if you haven’t taken Ladybird to the veterinarian yet, schedule an appointment. The vet should rule out any un-derlying illness, including thyroidism, and can give you advice on looking for a skin or food allergy. The frequent scratching that occurs with a flea infestation can result in scratched and broken skin, sometimes leading to an infection. And, many dogs are allergic to the “flea dust” left behind by fleas -- literally, their droppings -- and can continue having a reaction, including hair loss and frequent scratching, after the fleas are gone. A skin infection can be treated with antibiot-ics. An allergic reaction can be treated, in the short term, with a steroid, which will reduce irritation and swelling. Be sure to dust, vacu-um and thoroughly clean your home, including bedding and furniture, to reduce the allergens -- including flea dust that was left behind -- in Ladybird’s environment.Keep in contact with your vet about any im-provement or lack of improvement in her con-dition. Her hair could take several weeks to grow back fully, but you want to make sure the source of the skin problem is dealt with.

PATH OF A STAR (continued): Lionel Richie. When Richie played the Olympics

in 1984, Gooding was with him. • Mick Jagger once considered a more stable

calling than “internationally famous rock star.” He originally studied to be an accountant at the London School of Economics.

• Legendary actor Christopher Lee — who has appeared in over 275 movies and shows in his long, illustrious career — was once a heroic figure in another life, too. He was a Special Operations Executive during World War II, serving as part of an elite unit commissioned directly by Winston Churchill.

• Also serving in the unit with Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Many of Bond’s adventures were actually modeled after Fleming’s own experiences with the elite commando unit.

• Kurt Russell has been on our TVs and movie screens since the 1970s, but did you know he was also a champion athlete? Before injury, Russell played minor league baseball. His batting average when he retired was .586! He was a pretty good race car driver also, winning six national championships before he was 21.
