Wild Weekend in Seattle and History at the Northwest Nationals

August 2 as I approached the Space Needle in Seattle for the Northwest Nationals press conference. The Blue Angels jet planes roar over my head in a way of welcoming me to Seattle. Lots happening on this weekend in Seattle, Seafair, Hydro plane races and the exciting once a year Northwest Nationals. Saturday as I approached Pacific Raceways police were directing traffic to a back up parking lot area, every parking lot was packed. Blistering heat didn't stop fans from packing the stands to see all the big names in Drag racing. The Northwest Nationals also was the setting of a piece of history. Two female driv-ers won in two pro categories at the same race for the first time, Courtney Force in Funny Car and Erica Enders in Pro Stock. Thanks to Funny Car driver Ron Capps for his awesome insight into the world of being a funny Car driver. Also chatted with two nice guys from the O'Reilly Auto Parts team Curtis and Jerry, thank you for all the drag racing stories past and present.Special thanks to Media Marketing nice guy at Pacific Raceways John Ramsey for all of his help during my stay in Seattle.

Ban Pit Bulls?DEAR PAW’SCORNER: I’ve been reading re-centreportsthatsomecommunitiesintheUnitedStates are trying to ban certain breeds of dogs,likepitbulls.Ithinkthisisagreatidea,becausepitbullsaresounpredictableandviolent.Doyouagree?--CarolinTacoma,Wash.

DEARCAROL:Nope, I don’t agree. That’s be-cause completely banning specific dog breedswon’t solve the problem of dog bites and attacks. Evendogsofbreedsconsideredbenigncanattackhumans or other dogs -- poodles being the firstthatcometomind.But,youargue,poodlesaren’tviolent!Well--unfortunately,I’vemetafew.Thefactis,allbreedsofdoghavethepotentialtobitehumans.Ownersmustbeawareofandacceptthispossibility.I try to educatepetowners aboutbetterways tocarefortheirpets.Inthecaseofdogattacks,Ifeelthat education of the owner is the strongest deter-rent. That education should start before a person evenbecomesadogowner, sothatheorshecanmake the best choice of dog for the household. A pit bull or other type of guard or attack dog may not be ideal for a number of reasons beyond possi-bletemperament:They’rebigdogs;they’repow-erful; theyneedlotsofattentionandtraining, nomatter how nice they appear to be.Dogownersofallbreeds--notjustthoseconsid-ered“dangerous”--needtoknowthespecificbe-havioral issues of their breed. They need to train their dog, and socialize the dogwith both otherhumans and other dogs. The best way to learn how to do this is to enroll in group training classes with acertifiedtrainer, aninvestmentthatpaysoffallthe way down the road.

Probably the most widely known jet car of all time would have to be the Green Mam-ba. Designed, built, driven, owned and just about anything else you can think of by Doug Rose. The Green Mamba has been running all over the USA since the mid sixtys. Today, Doug takes the Green Mamba out to the circle tracks and does his shows and car burns. Currently based out of Florida, The Green Mamba and Doug are definately worth the trip to see in action.
