It’s time to learn more about these whatchamacallits and thingamajigs. • Those who love cats are ailurophilists, while those who love dogs are cynophilists. People who love all animals are referred to as philotherialists. • Misogamists and misopedists often go hand in hand. They hate marriage and children, respectively. Gamophobists don’t hate marriage; they’re just afraid of it. • Stop, thief! Look at the wide variety of terms used to describe these crooks — brigand, snaffler, kirkbuzzer, efter, ladrone or footpad. The snaffler is mainly a horse thief, while the kirkbuzzer robs only churches. The efter steals from theater customers while the performance is on, and ladrones and footpads are muggers who thieve while on foot. A specialized pickpocket who targets only churchgoers is referred to as an autem diver. • The Latin suffix “-aster” refers to anything with a lesser status, for example, a musicaster is a mediocre musician, while a militaster is a soldier without skills or abilities. The theologaster is a shallow theologian who has no deep spiritual thinking. turn the page for more! Hurry Up and WaitToo many veterans have waited far too long for

mental-health care. The Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veterans Affairs was asked

to look at whether the Veterans Health Administration is accurately recording the

wait times for mental-health services for both existing and new patients.

Policy states that if a veteran calls in and asks for help, he or she is to be seen within 24 hours. If after the initial evaluation the veteran is not immediately given services (hospitalization or outpatient care), a more-comprehensive

evaluation must take place within 14 days. This would include a diagnostic and treatment plan.VHA is to calculate wait times by figuring the days from the desired date of care to the date of the actual appointment. This assumes, of course, that the right date is entered into the

system.The VAOIG determined that: 1) VHA doesn’t

have a reliable way to determine whether it’s giving services on time; 2) VHA doesn’t provide initial appointments within that 24-

hour window; 3) Veterans are waiting far past that 14-day window for their treatment plan

appointments. As always, the devil is in the details.

The VA’s own 2011 performance report claimed that 95 percent had their evaluation with

14 days. Not so, said the VAOIG. The VA’s inaccurate calculations were based on the time between the actual appointment date and the time the evaluation was complete ... often on

the same day, which looked like a wait of zero days. It wasn’t calculating how long it took to get the appointment, which might have been

weeks. The VAOIG looked at selected records and

determined that only 49 percent of veterans had their evaluation within 14 days. The average

wait was 50 days to get a full evaluation.Fifty days is a long time for a veteran who is

seeking help.To read the whole report, go online to www.va.gov/oig/pubs/VAOIG-12-00900-168.pdf.

Tidbits® of Ft. Collins & Loveland Page 4

Grab the Brass RingMany of us have retired and then discovered

that retirement isn’t all it was cracked up to be. Maybe we got pushed out by downsizing.

Maybe we felt the time had come to stop working because we’d reached a certain age.

Now many of us miss having a purpose, structure and a reason to get up every day.

Certainly we miss the people we worked with and feeling valuable. Often we’re simply bored.

If you go online and Google the words “seniors retired bored” you’ll get more than 7 million hits. But here is a truth: We don’t have

to stay retired. If your retirement isn’t what you’d expected,

consider alternate paths you’d like to take for the rest of your life.

Think back: What did you truly want to do with your life? Many women were pushed into mother and wife roles. If you’re a man, perhaps

a college education wasn’t possible, so you created the best life you could.

But now you have time -- and opportunities. If you’re lucky enough to live near a college

or university, inquire about auditing (no credit) classes on topics that interest you. Maybe you’ll

even go on to get a degree. Make a list of everything you know how

to do, and offer to teach a class. Reading, swimming safety, woodworking, sewing,

bookkeeping, photography, art, home repair and other skills are all valuable to someone else.

Explore volunteer positions in your area and put your skills to use. Look at an AARP site

[www.createthegood.org] and either sign up for a volunteer slot or get on the list to be notified

of future opportunities. You might be astounded at the number of volunteer requests in your ZIP

code.Decide how you’d like to spend your time.

Then do it.

Kahne, Hendrick Back in GearCould it be that Kasey Kahne has nally turned the corner?Kahne, 32, won his third Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day weekend, meaning that four of his 13 career victories at the Sprint Cup level have occurred at the 1.5-mile track., where he also won the Sprint All-Star Race in 2008.But Kahne, who is from Enumclaw, Wash., has never nished better than eighth (2006) in the point standings. is year, Kahne’s rst at Hen-drick Motorsports, began slowly, but now he has reeled o consecutive nishes of seventh, eighth, h, fourth, eighth and rst, advancing from 31st to 15th in the standings. e latest CMS victory was important in terms of one of two wild-card slots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but, with 14 races remaining in the regu-lar season, Kahne is only 42 points behind 10th place Carl Edwards. e top 10 automatically advance into the Chase.“ e win’s really important for us to make the Chase and keep moving up in the points,” Kahne said. “You’ve got to win to make the Chase.“We just need to stay a er it and keep doing the things we’ve been doing.”Kahne and teammate Jimmie Johnson are the hottest drivers in the sport. Although Roush Fenway drivers Greg Bi e and Matt Kenseth are atop the point standings, it would be pre-mature at this point to suggest Hendrick isn’t still NASCAR’s best team.“Our team is solid,” Kahne said. “Our car is solid. Mr. Hendrick gives us everything we need to win races and run up front. Finally we were able to put it all together.“But next week (Dover) will be a new show. We have to gure it out again next week in prac-tice. It’s just tough. e competition is stout. It’s hard to just move through the eld and pass cars because everybody is so fast. e cars are so competitive right now, it makes it di cult.”***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for e Gaston (N.C.) THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Don’t Wait Until Fall to Get Chimney Cleaned

Q: I told my neighbor I was thinking of hiring a fireplace cleaner -- a chimney sweep, I guess -- this month, and he said I was crazy to schedule one at this time of year because they’ll charge me an arm and a leg. He said I should wait until fall when they’re busier. What do you think? -- Janice C., Syracuse,

N.Y.

A: I think you should go ahead and schedule the fireplace cleaning. Worrying about the possibility that the cleaning company will charge you more than usual is silly when you can get a written estimate before they start the work, and compare it to other services in

town.Plus, June is a slower season for chimney and fireplace cleaners, compared to fall when homeowners are in a hurry to get their fireplaces ready for the cold weather. The benefit to you is that you can have greater choice of the day and time you want them to come in and service the chimney. They also should be able to spend more time checking your fireplace, chimney and flue for potential dangers, rather than rushing off to the next

service call. Some chimney and fireplace service technicians offer discounts at this time of year. Check their website or call the company

to ask about any specials they’re running. Again, you have control over how much you’re willing to pay for chimney cleaning service. Ask for a written estimate up front, before allowing any work to be performed. If the chimney cleaner detects a problem, ask for a revised estimate, and don’t let the additional work done until you have agreed

on the work and the price.

HOME TIP: Help prevent a dangerous buildup of creosote in your chimney by burning hotter, cleaner fires. Use well-aged hardwood and crack a window in the room to

draw in more oxygen.

• To clean out your coffee grinder in order to use it for spices, add about a half-cup of white rice, then pulverize it. Repeat until scent is gone and rice powder comes out clean.

• It’s food-smart to separate utensils and cutting boards used for veggies, meats, poultry, etc. Here’s a handy chef’s trick: Color code. Paint a different color stripe down the edge of cutting boards and around the handle of utensils for each variety: green for veggies, yellow for poultry and red for beef.

• Line the bottom of your dog’s food dish (underside) with silicone caulk. Use a crisscross pattern in the center. This will keep the dish from sliding around when your pet eats.

Pets in DistressDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, my cat “Clark Gable” got very ill -- vomiting frequently and lethargic. I had no idea what was wrong, so I called my veterinarian. The vet’s assistant talked me through some important steps that I didn’t know and wouldn’t have been able to accomplish in my panicked state, such as looking at what C.G. was vomiting up and looking for possible sources of poisoning in my apartment. She advised me to bring him in immediately along with a sample of the vomit (gross, right?) and a couple of possible items he could have eaten. The vet was able to quickly treat C.G., who has made a complete recovery. But I’ve become much more aware that I need to

learn when my cat is in distress and how to prevent him getting into dangerous things -- like the houseplant leaves he ingested. I hope you’ll remind readers to educate themselves as well. -- Clarence in Cincinnati

DEAR CLARENCE: Your story is more common than you’d think. Thanks for sharing it.If you have a pet, it’s very important to know that many household items can be dangerous if your pet ingests them. For example, many cats love to chew on the leaves of houseplants -- but many houseplants are extremely poisonous to cats, especially plants from the lily family. Other seemingly benign things, like chocolate and onions, can be harmful to pets, especially dogs.Even armed with the

knowledge of what can harm your pet, accidents can happen. For example, a dog can break into the pantry and eat a giant bag of dog food. Make sure to display the phone number of your pet’s veterinarian and the nearest emergency pet hospital near the telephone or on the refrigerator where you can access it should your pet ever be injured, ill or in distress.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.
