Neatest TIDBITS® GETS IT TO-GO- by Kathy Wolfe No, it’s not anything to do with take-out Chinese in those little white boxes. This week, Tidbits features a variety of items that start with to- and go-. • Tobacco contributes to more than 400,000 deaths in the United States every year. That’s almost 20 percent of all U.S. deaths! About 23 percent of adult Americans smoke, and 30 percent of adolescents. A person who hasn’t used tobacco by the time he is 21 is quite likely to remain a non-smoker. Around the globe, about 10 million cigarettes are purchased each minute of every day. • Halfway between Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts, stood an old house, built in 1709 as a toll-collecting station, stable and inn for weary travelers. In 1930, along came Ken and Ruth Wakefield, who purchased the house and opened a lodge, naming it the Toll House Inn. Ruth provided many delicious meals for her guests, as well as tempting baked goods. While mixing up a batch of her favorite cookie recipe, as an experiment, she added a chopped chocolate bar. It was so well- liked, she continued the practice, and the treat became quite popular throughout the area. So popular, it soon became known as the Toll House cookie, a name that endures today. turn the page for more! Q. What happens when frogs park illegally? A. They get toad. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On July 16, 1863, the draft riots enter their fourth day in New York City in response to the Enrollment Act. Although avoiding military service became much more difficult, wealthier citizens could still pay a commutation fee of $300 to remain at home.

• On July 11, 1899, E.B. White, the author of the popular children's novels "Charlotte's Web," "Stuart Little" and "The Trumpet of the Swan," is born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. White also updated

and expanded "The Elements of Style," an English usage guide that remains a standard text for many students.

• On July 15, 1903, the newly formed Ford Motor Company takes its first order, from Chicago dentist Ernst Pfenning. The $850 two-cylinder Model A automobile with a tonneau (or backseat) was produced at Ford's plant on Mack Street (now Mack Avenue) in Detroit, and delivered to Dr. Pfenning just over a week later.

• On July 12, 1957, Dwight Eisenhower becomes the first president to ride in a helicopter, a Bell UH-13-J Sioux. Eisenhower suggested the idea to the Secret Service, which saw it as safer and more efficient than the traditional limousine motorcade.

• On July 14, 1968, Atlanta Braves slugger Henry "Hank" Aaron hits the 500th home run of his career in a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Aaron hit a three-run shot in the third inning off Giants' pitcher Mike McCormick to become the seventh player in baseball history to hit 500 homers.

• On July 17, 1975, as part of a mission aimed at developing space rescue capability, the U.S. spacecraft Apollo 18 and the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 19 rendezvous and dock in space. During the 44-hour Apollo-Soyuz embrace, the astronauts and cosmonauts conducted experiments, shared meals and held a joint news conference.

• On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. The 16-hour "superconcert" was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations.

Don’t get these two “good guys” mixed up. B.F. Goodrich began his career in the rubber industry in 1870 in Akron, Ohio, manufacturing fire hoses and billiard cushions. It was Charles Goodyear who perfected the vulcanization process, which made the rubber strong and resistant to cold and heat.

STRANGE BUT TRUEBy Samantha Weaver

• It was prolific British author G.K. Chesterton who made the following sage observation: "An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered."

• According to the Guinness Book of Records, the world's longest place name belongs to a hill in New Zealand, which is known as Taumatawhakatangihangak o a u a u o t a m a t e a t u r i p u k a k a pikimaungahoronukupokaiwhe nua kitanatahu. When translated from Maori, the language of the native people, the name reads "place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as land-eater, played his flute to his loved one."

• If you're planning a vacation to the Four Corners area of the American West, you might want to consider staying at a bed-and-breakfast just north of Farmington, N.M. One of the most unusual lodgings in the country, Kokopelli's Cave Bed and Breakfast is, as the name suggests, in a cave. Described as a "luxury cliff dwelling," the cave is reached via a footpath from the top of a mesa.

• The poison produced by the golden poison dart frog, found in the rainforests of Colombia, is so toxic that one-third of an ounce is enough to kill 100,000 people.

• In a traditional Hungarian wedding, the bride is supposed to ensure the health of her future children by smashing an egg. How the smashing of an egg is supposed to accomplish this feat is unclear.

• You might be surprised to learn that when you snap, the sound isn't produced when the tip of your finger hits the tip of your thumb. The sound actually occurs when the tip of your finger makes contact with the base of your thumb.***Thought for the Day: "Lying to ourselves is more deeply ingrained than lying to others." -- Fyodor Dostoevsky

However, if the body’s cells, tissues and organs are protected from harmful pollutants and replenished with crucial nutrients, the skin will reflect this level of health by appearing vibrant, glowing and youthful.

3. NO HARSH CHEMICALS OR IRRITANTSThe anti-aging products in the Rejuvity and IsaDermix® lines do not use any harsh, irritating chemicals or compounds, including phthalates or parabens. Other common products that include harsh compounds often require downtime and may damage the skin further.

4. PROMOTE SKIN’S NATURAL PROCESSESAgeless Renewal Serum and other anti-aging skin products help minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles, support collagen production, improve elasticity and tone, and increase firmness by helping the skin remember what it has forgotten as we age.

5. BOOST ENERGY, VITALITY, AND OVERALL HEALTHIn addition to the superior skin care, Rejuvity and other Isagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing products slow biological aging of the entire body, leading to enhanced energy and a new level of vitality and improved overall wellness.6. SUPPORTED BY SCIENCEAll of the ingredients in Rejuvity and the other Isagenix anti-aging and replenishing products are supported by scientific research. In addition, many of the company’s own products - including Ageless Renewal Serum - have been specifically investigated in scientific trials with extremely positive results. A recent trial on Ageless Renewal Serum showed a 92% increase in the overall improvement of the skin, and the CoQ10 used in Ageless Actives has been shown to be 800% more absorbable than standard powder forms used in other products.

7. SUPERIOR QUALITYIsagenix prides itself in using only the highest quality ingredients. With Rejuvity and other anti-aging product lines, this commitment to quality continues.8. UNMATCHED INGREDIENT FORMULATIONSAll of the Isagenix product lines boast unmatched ingredient profiles you can’t find in any other product. These include the growth factors, polypeptides and actives in Ageless Renewal Serum, the lipid-based CoQ10 in Ageless Actives, and many more.

9. ISAGENIX IS AHEAD OF THE CURVEThe Isagenix Quality, Regulatory, Technology, Science (QRTS) teams use the latest scientific research to create life-changing products, thus solidifying its position as an industry leader.

Buying Your First Computer

Even in this high-tech world, there are still many people who are just now buying their first computer. The process doesn't have to be intimidating. Your first step is to decide what you want the computer for, and how much you have to spend. Here are some tips to get you started:Make your first purchase from a store, not a private individual, for two reasons: You'll get a warranty, and if something should go wrong, a call to the store often will get you a fast and easy answer.Your best bet is to shop at various computer stores and take notes. Tell the store techs what you'll be using the computer for: email, games, a small business, photograph storage, writing

and correspondence, Internet. They'll be able to guide you to a computer that will handle what you want it to do.After you buy, before you leave the store, take the boxed-up computer to the

store's repair area and have virus protection installed. Either have the techs start up any pre-installed software and pay for the next year, or have them install a different type. You'll want to make sure your new computer is fully covered before you even get it home.If you have children or teens in the house, or anyone who is likely to change settings or install unwanted software on your new computer, have the store techs set up a BIOS password. That way no one but you will be able to start the machine. If finances make for a difficult decision -- whether to buy a better computer and no printer, or a lesser computer along with a printer -- hold off on the printer, as well as any other peripherals. Buy

the best computer you can afford. Printers, scanners, oversize monitors, upgraded speakers and lots of software can be purchased one at a time later, as you learn more about what you need and find it on sale. If the store has in-store credit, beware being talked into buying more computer than you'd planned on. Look carefully at the fine print on the agreement, especially the interest rate.If you haven't done it already, take a computer class. You don't want to discover in two years that your computer has capabilities you never knew about.

Is it really better to use plastic bags instead of paper at grocery stores? Not really. The monetary cost may be less, but the environment suffers when so many plastic bags get loose. Most of us have seen plastic bags flying in the wind, ending up on fences or in trees, littering otherwise attractive natural surroundings. One alternative is to use cloth bags.

There are many claims touting the benefits of the region’s solar radiation and climatic conditions, oxygen-enriched atmosphere, mineral-rich salty water, thermo-mineral springs and a therapeutic black mud. A Chilean flamingo named “Pink Floyd” wintered at the Great Salt Lake in Utah after escaping from Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City in 1987. He (gen-der uncertain) continued to live in the wild, surviving on brine shrimp. Floyd was last seen in 2005 in Idaho.
