Neatest TIDBITS® TAKES A DIP IN SOME BODIES OF WATER by Kathy Wolfe Water, water everywhere! About 71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. This week, Tidbits dips its toe in just a few of the world’s bodies of water. • Situated on the border between the United States and Canada and covering a total surface of 80,545 square miles (208,610 square km), the group of five Great Lakes holds more than 20 percent of the world’s surface fresh water. That’s enough water to cover the U.S. 48-state mainland to a depth of 9.5 feet (2.9 m). If you can’t remember their names, you can use the acronym HOMES, which puts the lakes in no particular order — Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. If you want to name them from west to east, use the phrase: She Made Harry Eat Onions. • The largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area is Lake Superior, stretching 350 miles (563 km) long by 160 miles (257 km) wide. In some places, it reaches a depth of 1,333 feet (406 m). The Ojibwe tribe has lived around Lake Superior for over 500 years and calls it “Gitche Gumee,” translating to “big water.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote of the lake in his 1855 poem “The Song of Hiawatha.” turn the page for more! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

Merchants of GlenrockWyoming Serving Their Customers

Many of us take for granted the ease with which we can find a card at the local gift shop, have our hair coiffed at the corner salon, grab a bite at a familiar eatery or get copies made while having a friendly conversation with the proprietor. But what if it were all gone? Poof! Not if the members of the New RAMS of Glenrock can help it. In fact, many merchants are going out of their way to accommodate customers, thinking up new and innovative ways to keep the doors open and business bustling. That’s good news for consumers. Sometimes, it’s not just the price of an item or ser-vice that is the bottom line for customers, but it’s the total value of the experience. RAMS dedicated to the community and busi-nesses of Glenrock/Converse County...bringing exciting weekend events, annual celebrations and the upholding of the organiza-tion’s values to preserve and protect offers countless patrons to the district the kind hospitality, and the sense of community that is truly Glenrock. High-Tech Thieves Target Your Credit

Cards

When you walk through a store or the mall, you might pass a hundred or more people, and that's on a day it's not crowded. It used to be that you needed to beware of the pickpockets who might lift your wallet from your back pocket or purse. Nowadays it's possible that a thief could steal your credit-card information just by walking by.Recently, a television station demonstrated just how this works. New credit cards have RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification chips in them, which can be read by a

scanner. (Technology and computer magazines and websites have been talking about this for years.) Major chain stores have been using RFID to scan inventory, and new passports carry

a chip that includes all your information, including photo. In the case of your wallet, a thief carries a netbook computer with a small credit-card reader (available on the Internet). As he passes near you in a crowd, the scanner picks up your credit-card numbers and expiration dates. Then, with the press of a few buttons, those numbers can be sent elsewhere. Purchases could be made on your account before you even get home -- with your wallet intact and you none the wiser. Think how many cards could be scanned with one pass through a mall, subway or fair. Not all cards have RFID --

yet. If yours is the new type of credit or debit card that can pay for a transaction just by being waved near the reader at a register, you might not be safe from a portable reader in the hands of a thief walking near you.At this point, there hasn't been a lot of theft reported, likely because people never know what happened. In a worst-case scenario, you live in a state that has the RFID chip in your driver's license, which will provide your address. Add in a few credit-card numbers, and you could be well on your way to having your identity stolen. For protection, there are special metal-lined wallets that block the signals from being read. These wallets are made of fancy leathers and are expensive. Still, many people will purchase one for the security it offers. On the other hand, to block the signal, there is always aluminum foil.

The body of water that is an area of a sea or ocean that is partially enclosed by land can be known by three different names. The largest of this type is a gulf and the smallest is a cove. The body of water that is in between these two in size is known as a bay.

Five minutes after a father put his son to bed, the boy screamed, “Dad! Can you get me a glass of water?” Dad replied, “Nope, you had your chance.” One minute later came, “Dad! Can you get me a glass of water?” and the reply: “No. You had your chance. Next time you ask, I’ll come up there and spank you.” This was followed up with, “Dad! When you come up to spank me, can you bring me a glass of water?”

The Mediterranean Sea takes its name from the Latin word mediterraneus, which translates “in the middle of earth” or “between lands.” This is due to its location between the continents of Africa and Europe. The Bible’s Book of Exodus refers to it as the “Sea of the Philistines.”
