The scammers who want to separate us from our money never sleep. And they've gotten more creative than ever.

Scammers are targeting those who make purchases on Amazon.com and are raking in millions of dollars. They send out a mass e-mail, complete with a duplicate of the Amazon logo, with a thanks for the most recent purchase. A variation is to send an e-mail saying that the Amazon.com account has been compromised. The pur-chaser is asked to click a link, which either downloads a virus or brings up a webpage that asks for login and credit-card information. Since so many people buy from Amazon.com, the scammers actually are hitting large numbers of purchasers. With personal information in hand, they go on a spending spree.

Hotels are notorious for lack of security in their computers, and scammers are having a field day with it.

Scammers Add to Bag of Tricks

It's thought that hotel computers are the No. 1 location for credit-card scammers to attack. And it's not just the mom-and-pop motels -- the major chains are getting hit too. There's not much that can be done, except to check your credit-card statements the minute you get them. There's a movement afoot to have credit-card holders check their purchases and balances on a daily basis to stop the frauds faster. However, there is danger in that as well, especially if you use WiFi and check your account from an unprotected location.

There must be money in online auto sales, because scammers have targeted that area, too. To accomplish the fraud, scammers create a website or e-mail address that is only one letter off from a legitimate site. All it would take is a small typo to put purchasers in contact with the scammers instead of the actual dealership. Purchasers would inquire about buying a vehicle, and the scammers would tell them how and where to wire the money ... and of course, the vehicle is never delivered.

Anytime there's a disaster or storm, beware of phony solicitations. With the BP oil spill, it's said that some creative scammers were even taking money to get clean-up jobs for people who applied. Hurricanes, deep snow, floods -- they're all perfect for the scammers who prey on our generous spirits.

PuzzleAn swers

There’s defi nitely a nip in the air at my house. Chances are your weather has turned cooler, too. It’s time to brace ourselves for winter, no matter where we live.

If you haven’t had a fl u and pneumonia shot, and if your doctors thinks you need one, do it now.

Check your winter clothing. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Go for layers instead of one heavy parka. A shirt, sweater, scarf and coat are better at keeping you warm. Don’t forget to wear a hat! Do you have non-slip footwear? Stay warm inside the house, too. A lightweight vest is perfect for that.

Stock up on antiseptic wipes and use them fre-quently, especially on grocery-cart handles.

Is your area subject to power outages? A selec-tion of fl ashlights placed around the house will al-low you to grab one quickly if the lights go out.

Do you have drafty windows? Have someone help you install those clear plastic sheets on the inside of windows. Once they’re stretched with a hair dryer, you can’t even see them.

If you have a space heater, be careful with it. They need to be placed well away from curtains and furniture.

Add a few canned goods and frozen food items to your shopping list. Don’t forget extra food for your pet, if you have one, as well as bathroom tissue. That way when the weather is extremely cold, you won’t have to go out.

Put new batteries in your smoke detector before you turn on the furnace for the year.

Plan some regular outings with friends or sign up for a class, especially one involving indoor walking. There’s no need for us to stay huddled inside all winter!

October 7 - 13, 2010

The King is far from dead. The King lives.

With apologies to Richard Petty, Jim-mie Johnson has been king of the Sprint Cup Series for four years and seems unlikely

to abdicate the throne. Maybe Petty's King with a capital K, and Johnson's just king with a little one.

The latest victory, his 53rd, was at Dover In-ternational Speedway, where Johnson has won three of the last four Cup races.

"The tire that Goodyear brought back -- it's the same as it was in the spring -- blackened up the track in a hurry, but really made it challenging after 30 or 40 laps. ... I had to fall back on my dirt-racing background."

For the record, Johnson's "dirt-racing back-ground" wasn't at Eldora or Knoxville. It was through deserts. Johnson first made his reputa-tion in off-road racing.

At 35 years of age, Johnson, a native of El Cajon, Calif., has already won four Cup cham-pionships. Only two drivers, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, have ever won more. Neither ever won four in a row, an unprecedented achievement. Now Johnson seems on track to make it five.

Johnson isn't boastful by nature, even though he has every right to be. He laughs easily but sel-dom jokes. Some find him boring off the track.

But not on it. He opened the Chase with a 25th-place finish. Guess what? He opened it with a 39th in 2006 and went on to win the champion-

Champ Jimmie Lurksship. His quick recovery at Dover was typical of past performances. He and crew chief Chad Knaus have forged a relationship that serves as a model for every other such combination in the sport.continued on page 15

Four-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has won 19 of the 62 races during the seven-year history of NASCAR's playoff season.

(John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

For much of the AAA 400, A.J. Allmend-inger dominated. Johnson bided his time and ended up rising to the front and staying there for the final stages.

"We played it smart," he said. "He (All-mendinger) wasn't 'a Chase guy,' so I didn't feel good about letting him go, but when he got to me and put pressure on me, I let him by.

"Come the end of the race, he wasn't there to have to fight with."

• On Oct. 24, 1775, a British naval fleet of six ships sails up the James River to destroy the town of Norfolk, Va. Expecting the Patriots and local militia to come charging and to engage in open combat, the British were surprised to come under fire from expert riflemen, who began striking down British troops at a distance.

• On Oct. 18, 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for less than 2 cents an acre, a purchase championed by Secretary of State William Seward. The American public believed the land to be barren and worthless, and dubbed the purchase "Seward's Folly."

• On Oct. 23, 1921, in France, U.S. Army Sgt. Edward Younger selects from four caskets the body of the first "Unknown Soldier" to be honored among the approximately 77,000 United States servicemen killed during World War I. He marked the casket with a spray of white roses.

• On Oct. 20, 1947, the notorious Red Scare kicks into high gear as a Congressional committee begins investigating Communist influence in Hollywood. Q: I recently purchased a “Gentle Ben” lunchbox at a yard sale in Phoenix for $6. I think that it’s worth much more than that, but can’t seem to find it referenced in any of the price guides I have. Can you help me? -- Louise, Sun City, Ariz.

A: Your lunchbox was manufactured by Aladdin in 1968. According to Warman’s Lunch Boxes Field Guide by Joe Soucy (Krause, $12.99), it is worth about $225.

• • •Q: I recently inherited three small tables that have been in my family

since the early 1930s. The original owner was in the import/export business in New York. I would like to determine their value. -- Norma, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: You need to contact a certified appraiser, and you should be pre-pared to pay a fee for his or her services. You should be able to find an appraiser in your city by looking under “Appraisers” in the business pages of the Albuquerque telephone directory. Ask for references, and don’t be shy about asking about the appraiser’s training and expertise. If you can’t find one in the telephone book, there are two websites that might be helpful: www.appraisersassoc.org and www.appraisers.org.

nor was I able to locate it on eBay or other Internet auction site. The picture you sent suggests that it was probably made in either the 1970s or ‘80s. I have seen similar items from this period sell in the $10 to $20 range.

• • •Q: I have a bottle that was issued to commemorate the inaugura-

tion of Dwight Eisenhower in 1953. Is it worth anything? -- John, Salem, Ill.

A: I assume your bottle is a liquor bottle. I found one listed in Warman’s Political Collectibles by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen (Krause, $24.99). If so, it is valued in the $35 to $50 range.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I moved into a home in rural Vermont this summer and was rather terrified one morning when I walked out into my backyard and found myself face to face with a bear. I ran back in the house, and it trundled off into the woods. Later, my neighbors told me the bear is well-known in the area and that some residents, including my home's former owner, used to feed it. What can I do to keep it out of my yard? -- Jessica, via e-mail

There's a BearBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR JESSICA: Bears can be a real nuisance -- although in many places it's human encroach-ment that exacerbates the problem -- and when well-meaning humans feed them, they become more than a nuisance: They're then a danger.

Let the Vermont Fish & Wildlife office (http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/) near you know about the bear. Unlike some states and urban areas, the office may not be able to come out and capture or kill the bear, but they will give you advice on how to reduce the risk of another surprise visit.

Meantime, follow these steps as well:• Don't leave garbage cans outdoors; store in a

shed or garage and have a well-latched cover.• Don't place garbage on the curb the night

before trash pickup.• Feed your pets indoors.• After a barbecue, clean the grill well. Store

inside if possible.• If you have a bird feeder, empty it or take it

inside for at least four weeks.Keep in contact with your neighbors about the

bear. If you or they continue to have problems, stay in contact with Vermont Fish & Wildlife. The USDA Animal Damage Control Unit is another resource (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/).

liver should have no fat. Fat infiltrates it for a couple of reasons. One is excessive alcohol. An-other is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a common occurrence. It doesn't always cause damage, but it can progress to something called NASH, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis -- a condition that can further progress to cirrhosis. This stage is best discovered through a liver biopsy. The first treatment for liver fat, including NASH, is weight loss. For many, it's the only treatment needed to correct the situation.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hear that taking 10,000 steps a day is all that a person needs to stay healthy. Is this so? How much time does that take? Do you count all the steps you take in a day, or are these 10,000 steps in addition to what you normally take? -- G.D.

ANSWER: The 10,000-steps-a-day program originated in the Surgeon General's office some years back. It's been shown, more than once, that people who increase their total daily steps to 10,000 (counting the ones they normally take) have less body fat, lower blood sugar and lower blood pressure. There is more to staying fit than taking 10,000 leisurely steps. Strength building is also important.

Ten thousand steps are approximately 5 miles (3.6 to 4.9 miles; 6 to 8 kilometers). How much time does this take? The walking should be brisk. That's defined as taking 90 to 100 steps a minute. For the entire time involved, you can do the math. However, these steps don't all have to be taken in one session. You can amass them throughout the day. A hundred steps a minute is a quick pace. You might not be up to it. It's OK to start more slowly and gradually work your way to the 100-steps-a-minute goal, and not all the 10,000 steps have to be such fast ones. The goal of 10,000 steps is another thing that can take you a while to reach. Don't try to do all this on the first day. Start out by taking an extra 200 steps a day, and gradually work your way to 10,000 over a couple of months.

You can't count these steps without driving yourself crazy. You need a pedometer, a gadget that records your steps. Pedometers range in cost from $17 to $80. They can be worn on a belt, put in a pocket or worn around the leg. They register steps by the movement of the hips or the impact of the foot against the ground.

If you want to be really healthy, you have to add some resistance exercise to your program. Resistance exercise is lifting weights.

The booklet on fitness explains the benefits of walking and other aerobic exercise in clear language. Freeze Pruf is a water-based, eco-safe spray that enhances the plant’s natural mechanisms to resist freeze damage, shielding it from ice crystal damage.

Lighting The WayBy Doris A. Black

Adding low-voltage landscape lighting to your home is a great way to enhance some of your yard’s best features while improving safety and security. This easy project will add class and style to your home after sunset and no prior electrical experience is required.

Consider installing landscape lighting along walkways, drive-ways, pools, patios and fences or highlight certain plants or trees by placing lights at the base and pointing them up. Typically outdoor lighting systems have three components: the fi xtures themselves, which are available in a wide range of styles; an electrical cable; and a transformer. You will, of course, need one additional item—an outdoor outlet.

Choosing the fi xture is probably the most diffi cult part of the whole project. Most home improvement stores carry a variety of styles, sizes and colors. There are fi xtures that sit low to the ground, creating a lone spot, and others which spread the illumination. There are plain or ornate, contemporary or traditional, economically priced or high-end fi xtures. The variations can be overwhelming. But fi rst, consider how you would like the illumination to function. As a guide along a walkway, you may want to choose an inconspicuous fi xture that is low to the ground. On the other hand, if you want the fi xture itself to make a statement, you may choose among the tall ornate styles to match your home’s architectural style, such as a Mission-style lantern or a stained glass fi xture to correspond with a 1900s Victorian home. Finish is the next consideration. Lanterns come in wide variety of fi nishes, such as bronze, copper and pew-ter. Choose the one that best complements your home.

Purchase a low-voltage cable to correspond with the lighting system you’ve chosen. You’ll need a 14-guage cable for systems that carry 200 watts of electricity or less or a 12-guage cable for systems that use over 200 watts. You’ll also need a transformer to convert the 120-volt house current to the 12 volts used by landscape lighting systems. Purchase a transformer that has enough capacity to support the entire wattage of the lighting system you’ve chosen.

The installation process starts with laying out the com-ponents:

1. Place the fi xtures six to eight feet apart where you think they will be installed. For walkways, place the fi xtures six to 10 inches

from the edge of the walkway.2. Lay the cable along the same path, starting from the outlet.

The cable will be buried in a shallow trench between fi xtures.3. Using a shovel, slice the top layer of grass where each

fi xture will be placed. Fold this piece of sod back and make a three-inch trench in the dirt with the shovel. Lay the cable along this trench, leaving slack at each fi xture position. Cover the rest of the cable with dirt.

4. Make a hole in the sod where the fi xture will be inserted. Push the sod back in place while pulling the slack portion of the cable through the hole.

5. Using wire strippers at the end of the cable, strip off half an inch of the rubber insulation, exposing the wires. Place the wires under the two terminal screws on the bottom of the transformer and tighten. The transformer can then be mounted either to the side of the house or to a wooden stake near the outlet. Plug the transformer into the outlet.

6. Using a stake or screwdriver, puncture the sod and insert the fi xture. Don’t hammer it in place or you will damage the fi xture.

7. Connect the light fi xture to the cable by clipping the two connector halves around the cable and pinch. When you hear a click, you’ll know the connection is secure. The fi xture should light up immediately since the transformer is plugged in. Push the cable and connector into the sod. Proceed with each fi xture in the same manner. If one does not light up, try reattaching the connector again or check the bulb.

8. Check each fi xture to make sure it is vertical. Using your foot, fi rmly press the sod around each fi xture to secure it. Water the sod for quick recovery.

When installing landscape lighting in planting beds, the process is the same but easier since you’ll probably be working with mulch or topsoil instead of sod.

Costs for a system like this are relatively small. Depending on the style of fi xture you choose, prices range from $20 to $150. The cable typically runs around $25 and the transformer from $50 to $100.

Almost anyone can install their own landscape lighting. To get ideas on how you can enhance your home and garden with lighting, drive around some evening and notice what type of lighting your neighbors have, how it is used and what effect it projects. You might even want to stop and ask questions. They’ll be fl attered. This small fi nancial investment can make a big impact on your home.
