HORSES, DONKEYS & MULES (contin-ued):• Have you heard the term “longears?” It is an endearing term used for donkeys and mules. Horses have small ears, donkeys and mules have long ones. Mules’ ears are not quite as long as donkeys. A hinny’s ears are shorter and much wider than donkey ears. • The tails of mules, donkeys and horses are dif-ferent. Donkey tails are similar to cow tails with a tuft of hair on the end. They are not as long as the tails of horses and mules. Tails of horses and mules have long thin hair that goes all the way to the end of their tails. • When a horse is scared or “spooked,” it will run but a donkey will either stand and defend its ground (fight) or just simply “freeze.” So, what does a mule do? It can choose either one since it is part horse and part donkey! • Donkeys and mules are considered more intel-ligent than horses. When they “freeze” it is part of their “well-developed instinct for self-pres-ervation.” Considered stubborn, most experts think they are just thinking over the situation at hand and are not likely to put themselves in danger. Horses allow themselves to be worked until they are exhausted; mules won’t. Accord-ing to ruralheritage.com, “a mule will trust its own judgement before it trusts yours.” • Mules, as with most hybrids, were bred to join the desirable qualities of donkeys and horses. They get their strength and stamina from horses and their patience, sure-footed gate and intelli-gence from donkeys. • Even when working regularly mules and don-keys live longer than horses. A farm mule can work hard for 18 years, where a horse is only good for about 15. Mules that are well cared for and do lighter work have been known to live for 30-40 years.

HORSES, DONKEYS & MULES (contin-ued):• Most donkeys and mules are used for work on farms and trail rides, either packing humans or cargo. They are considered “beasts of burden.” The term, defined as “animals used for transport-ing loads or doing other heavy work,” is also used for elephants and oxen.• Mules are used by the U.S. Army to carry sup-plies in Afghanistan and other places where the terrain is difficult.• There are 185 breeds of donkeys, with about 41 million in the world today. Used in many places around the world, China has the most with about 11 million. • George Washington is considered to be the “Father of the American Mule.” In 1785 he was gifted a large Spanish jack from King Carlos III of Spain. The next year, 1786, he received a Maltese jack and two jennets from French Gen-eral Lafayette. He had his prize mares (horses) bred to his new jacks and became the first mule breeder in America.• Other famous Americans who “connected” with mules were: Buffalo Bill Cody, Mark Twain, Harry Truman, Ken Curtis and Ronald Reagan. Ken Curtis played Festus on the long-running television western, Gunsmoke. • Not only were mules used in western ranch set-tings, they were used to help populate the west-ern United States. Mules could pull loaded wag-ons 30 miles (48.3 km) per day as compared to wagons pulled by horses or oxen that could only average about five miles (8 km) per day.

HORSES, DONKEYS & MULES (contin-ued):• Borax is a “naturally occurring substance pro-duced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes.” It looks like cotton balls! Nothing is add-ed to borax for household cleaning and laundry use. The product is washed, dried and boxed. Borax is also used in other ways, such as in the glass industry. • The removal and hauling of borax from Death Valley was not an easy chore. The nearest rail-road junction for getting the product out of the valley to consumers was in Mojave, California, 165 miles (266 km) away. Mules were an im-portant part of the solution for bringing borax to market.• The idea of using 20-mule teams started with William Tell Coleman’s borax company. (By the way, the 20-mle teams were actually 18 mules and 2 horses!) Two teams were hitched together to form a 20-mule team that was 100 feet (30.5 m) long. The teams pulled two 16-foot (4.9 m) long wagons loaded with borax and a 1,200 gal-lon (4542.5 l) water tank. The total weight pulled by each 20-mule team was over 36 tons (32659 kg). • Between 1883 and 1889, more than 20 million pounds (9,071,846 kg) of borax was hauled out of Death Valley by the 20-mule teams. The mule teams were eventually replaced by a rail spur. • The “20-Mule Team” symbol, still seen on box-es of detergent and other places, was first used in 1891 and registered as a trademark in 1894. • The Twenty Mule Team Museum in Boron, California, has been opened since 1984. The museum offers interesting information about the borax industry and the famous mule teams.

You might be surprised to learn that the ham-burger didn’t originate in the United States. In fact, it was early Turkic people called the Tatars who first came up with the idea. When they had low-quality beef, they discovered that shredding it and patting it back together improved the fla-vor and texture.

If for some reason you have a hankering to see the world’s biggest tire, you’ll need to head to Detroit (fittingly, I suppose). Located near the Detroit Metro Airport, the 80-foot Uniroyal tire weighs in at a whopping 12 tons. This attraction was created for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, where it served not only as an advertise-ment for the Uniroyal brand, but also as a Fer-ris wheel for the entertainment of attendees. In 1998, the company created the world’s largest nail -- measuring 11 feet long and weighing 250 pounds -- and used it to pierce the giant tire. It was another advertising stunt, of course; this time to promote Uniroyal’s puncture-resistant tire.

If you’re like the average American, you will eat between 25 and 30 pounds of apples this year.

Some researchers believe that those who drink large quantities of coffee on a daily basis are self-medicating for depression.

There is a species of frog found in Australia with an odd method of reproduction. It lays eggs like other frogs, but this particular frog keeps the eggs in its stomach, hatching them internally. When the baby frogs are fully developed, they emerge into the world via the adult frog’s mouth.

YOUR ADRENALS AND HEALTH

NEW! CLASSIFIED ADS ONLY $ 6.50 A WEEK. SEE PG 23!

The adrenal gland is an important player in a symphony with other endocrine glands, responsible for the direction of many hormonal activities in the body. Mostly known for its role in the “fight or flight” mechanism, the adrenals (2 glands that sit atop each kidney) play an integral role in stress, energy, sugar metabolism, weight, sex hormone regulation and more. When discussing adrenal health, several terms need to be clarified: Adrenal Insufficiency is a term reserved for the medical disease which constitutes a measureable lack of production of adrenal hor-mones, especially cortisol and aldosterone. Addison’s Disease is the official medical term applied to this medical condition. It is a serious condition that may result in severe abdominal pains, significant muscle weakness, fatigue, depression, kidney failure and others. It is usually precipitated by an ac-cident, severe stressful event, surgery, serious injury, or bad infection.Cushing’s Syndrome is a medical disease that results from significant overproduction of cortisol which can also result in fatigue, and weak muscles, but also ulcers, significant weight gain, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar to name just a few of the symptoms.Adrenal Fatigue is a common term applied when the adrenals are not diseased, as above, but not well either. It is not considered a medical condition, and not even recognized by conventional medi-cal doctors. It is, however, a more common term that natural health practitioners use to identify a syndrome that is in the “grey area” between good function and disease. The adrenal glands play a pivotal role in the production of energy, especially sustained energy throughout the day. They are part of the “ricochet romance” that occurs between other endocrine (hormone-producing) glands in the body. These include: the pancreas, thyroid, sex hormones, pitu-itary, hypothalamus, liver and others. Without good adrenal health, success in managing conditions of any of those glands is difficult at best. One of the hormones produced by the adrenals, cortisol, is critical for many functions. It is a “good” hormone when released in small amounts, a “bad” hormone when it surges. In proper excretion it converts to “cortisone”, our body’s natural anti-inflammatory hormone. It is also the hormone that maintains resistance to stress, regulates glucose, maintains mood and emotional stability, maintains minerals, and mobilizes fatty acids needed for fuel for energy production. The bad part of cortisol is when it surges. Then it tells the body to store more fat, especially around the waist, increases blood pressure, increases muscle breakdown, demineralizes bone, interferes with the healing process, especially of the skin, suppresses the immune system, increases inflamma-tion and blood sugar, messes with estrogen, and results in poor memory. Stress and eating sugar are the two elements that cause cortisol to surge.Weak or “tired” adrenals are mostly caused by sugar, caffeine, and alcohol intake, stress, and inad-equate sleep. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to improve adrenal health. Why Advertising WorksDo this two-step process:1.Think of a distant acquain-tance.2. Now, think of a friend you see often. If two of them were in a room full of other people, who do you gravitate toward? For a

ridiculous majority of us, we'll approach our friend. It's the famil-iarity principle. That is, the more you see something provided it's under a positive light, the more you like it. In other words, the more that people see your company (whether that's a newspaper ad, web-site visit, TV exposure, etc.) -- subconsciously, the more they'll like it. And -- if deciding between your brand and a more obscure one, guess who wins?

Does Advertising Work For Every Company? For most part, yes -- if you do it right. Placing a Super Bowl ad for your new product, and hope that'll convert a billion dollars? Not a chance. That's how internet companies earlier this decade im-ploded: They threw all their marketing eggs into one basket, hop-ing the masses would latch on. They never did. Instead, advertising takes a continuous "test-see-act" approach for your company.

Magnesium Glycinate Chelate by Designs for HealthDo you suffer from Headaches or Migraines? Leg cramps or arrhythmia? Do you have trouble fall-ing asleep or relaxing for bed at night? You may be like up to 80% of Americans---> Magnesium deficient! Magnesium is involved in over 300 metabolic reactions, and thus low magnesium could be what ails you.Magnesium is said to be ‘natures calcium channel blocker’, and deficiency has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Studies have even show magnesium improved insulin sensitivity in Pre-Diabetic individuals. It’s not a wonder we are deficient as a nation, with the number 1 food source of magnesium being leafy green vegetables. And what about the kind of magnesium? I can buy magnesium citrate from Walgreens for $2, won’t that help my magnesium levels? And the answer is..... nope. It will give you an immediate bowel movement, though! Chelated minerals are best absorbed by the body, and Magnesium Glycinate Chelate is the one I recommend.

Some people get bladder infections, or UTI's (urinary tract infections) very easily, and always are taking antibiotics. There is another way to treat UTIs, and that's with a sugar called D-mannose.

D-mannose is a naturally occurring sugar that is present on the surfaces of the cells that line the bladder and urinary tract. E Coli, the most common bacteria that causes UTIs, loves D-mannose. Take one tsp of D-mannose every 3-4 hrs while awake. Your body will dump most of this into the urine, which then flows into the bladder. The E Coli will absolutely love it and attach itself to the D-mannose, detaching themselves from the wall of the bladder.

Then, when it's time to urinate, out flow the E Coli!

Continue treating yourself for 24 hrs after the symptoms are resolved. This treatment is successful 90% of the time. You can find D-mannose at your healthfood store.

Here are two tips straight from my local butcher about cooking meat: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly, and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill or out of the oven, give it time to rest before serving. This al-lows the juiced to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite. -- JoAnn

“Depending on how you scoop it, you can end up with too much or too little flour. Here is a tip about getting the best amount every time. Give the flour a stir with a spoon and then lightly spoon it into a measuring cup. When it is heaped over, use a knife to level out the measure with-out tamping down.” -- Y.E. in Arkansas

“Baking is a science as well as an art. It’s about interaction of ingredients and what happens when they mix in certain ways. So this is not so much a tip as a caution. Make sure of your sub-stitutions, and use the right amounts of things. Then your cakes will be light and fluffy, and your pastry will be flaky and moist.” -- B.G. in Pennsylvania

Berries are in season, and there’s no greater time to stock up. But don’t feel like you have to make jam out of all the berries. Freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Later they can be popped into muffins and quick breads, as well as eaten straight out of the bag for a delicious treat.

When searing meat on a stovetop, be sure your pan is oiled (if called for) and up to temperature. Otherwise, the meat will stick.Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Deported Veterans Can Re-turn in CoffinHundreds, perhaps thousands of foreign-born U.S. military veterans who have been convicted of crimes and served their time in prison have been deported, despite living legally in the U.S. since childhood. They are dumped in the coun-try of their birth -- a country they may have no memory of, where a language they may not un-derstand is spoken. What kept those service members from filing for American citizenship when they could have, five years after getting a green card? One theme stands out: Many were told by recruiters and at boot camp that U.S. citizenship was automatic when they were honorably discharged from the military. Others came back from service over-seas in no shape, physically or mentally, to deal with bureaucracy. Where do we draw the line with deporting vet-erans? Immigrant lawbreakers who are not vet-erans are routinely deported for serious crimes. Does being a veteran and putting your life on the line for this country count for anything after you pay your debt to society? For a U.S. citizen, you do your time and you go free. And what of the crimes these deportee veterans commit? Should a line be drawn to distinguish between nonviolent and violent crimes? Felo-nies can include any number of crimes, some more serious than others. Some misdemeanors can be interpreted as aggravated felonies when it comes to immigration and deportation. Here’s the kicker: Deported veterans can’t come back -- until they’re dead. If they were discharged under honorable conditions, they qualify for burial in a veterans cemetery and the government will kick in $300 to have the body returned. Additionally, veterans still qualify for benefits, but they can’t get here to claim them.To learn more, go online and research “veter-ans deported.” Look up immigration-law expert Margaret Stock, a retired military police lieu-tenant colonel, and read some of the stories she tells.

Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to [email protected].

Creative Kids Helping Ani-malsDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column on volunteering at pet shelters and for other or-ganizations. All great, but many shelters don’t let anyone under 16, and sometimes 18, volun-teer to work with the pets. However, for kids who want to help pets in some way, there are still some great ways to do so! They can organize or join fundraisers at their school or church, and donate the funds to local shelters or pet-welfare organizations. There are many different ways to raise money, and that’s what most animal-care groups need: cash! -- Cheering Volunteer Mom in Virginia

DEAR MOM: Great idea! Raising funds can be as easy as participating in a walk for animal wel-fare (like the Wiggle Waggle Walk in Pasadena, Calif.). Or kids can think of things to make and sell for a fundraising drive, like the two grade-schoolers in Kingston, N.Y., who raised money for the Ulster County SPCA through a church project.“They were given $10 and asked to use it to make more money for a charity. Tyler made labor in-tensive bracelets and donated $75, and Caelin made dog biscuits and donated $450,” Marie Shultis of the Ulster County SPCA said. The shelter is looking at starting a youth entre-preneurial group to help other kids learn about fundraising, and plans to develop workshops for teen volunteers to teach young people about car-ing for animals. So, even if a local shelter doesn’t have a lot of accessible events or volunteer opportunities, kids can come up with great ideas to help them anyway. Parents, educators, church-group lead-ers and other youth leaders can help foster the spirit of volunteering and provide guidance.

Famous CanadiansRICK MORANISFrederick Alan Moranis was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 18, 1953. Known as Rick, he is mostly known for the nerdy charac-ters he has played, usually wearing large glasses, and his short (5 ft. 4 in. or 1.625 m) stature. • Moranis started his career as a high school stu-dent in Toronto with a part-time job as a radio engineer, eventually becoming a popular dee-jay. • His big break came when he landed a hit part on the popular Second City TV (SCTV) show in 1980. A requirement for actors on the show was that they had to include “identifiable Canadian content” in each episode. Moranis and his co-hort, Dave Thomas, created two silly dimwitted brothers, Bob and Doug MacKenzie, who were a pair of “beer-guzzling, back-bacon-chewing hosers.” • Thomas and Moranis played the brothers on the weekly show called The Great White North and have been credited with instilling the Cana-dian “eh” at the end of sentences, getting many extra laughs from their fellow Canadians and the North American fans to the south. The series spawned a feature film, Strange Brew, in 1983.• After leaving Second City TV, Moranis was in two Ghostbusters movies, Little Shop of Horrors, and his very memorable role as the eccentric in-ventor, Wayne Szalinski, in Honey I Shrunk the Kids in 1989, and Honey I Blew Up the Kid in 1992. Later, in 1997, he played Szalinski again in the direct-to-video movie, Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. • Some other films that Moranis has been a part of are: Little Giants, in 1994: Big Bully, in 1995; and he played Barney Rubble in The Flintstones, in 1994.

RICK MORANIS (continued):• Moranis lost his wife, Ann, after a battle with liver cancer in 1991. He moved from his trans-planted home in Hollywood back to Canada in 1997 to raise his two children. Moranis intended for his “retirement” to only last a few years, but realized that he didn’t miss the pressure of life in Hollywood. • Moranis still does occasional voice work on movies, such as Brother Bear. On acting, he has said, “I’m really not an actor. I’m a guy who comes out of comedy, and my impetus was al-ways to rewrite the line to make it funnier, not to try to make somebody’s precious words work.” He liked the ability to change lines like he did in his earlier movies. • A few extra notes about Moranis: He was fea-tured on the cover of the first issue of Disney Adventures magazine in 1990; he was the only cast member on SCTV who didn’t come from the Second City theatre; he had a letter published in Mad Magazine, Issue #120, July 1968, titled, “Don Martin Looks at Frogs;” and, he released a comedy/country album in September 2005, titled The Agoraphobic Cowboy. • In 2013, eight years after The Agoraphobic Cowboy, Moranis released another musical comedy album. My Mother’s Brisket & Other Love Songs, brings music and laughter derived from his Jewish upbringing. Included songs are “Oy, The Mistakes I Made” and “I Can’t Help It, I Just Like Christmas.”• This funny man loves to talk about his fel-low Canadians: “We stand on guard at red lights, even when there is no traffic. We wait for clear, green governing lights to signal our turn and lead us on. Then we tuck our heads down, un-der wooly toques and worn-out scarves, one eye barely open, squinting headlong into the harsh prairie wind, cautiously, quietly, demurely Ca-nadian.”

Tin-Can Stacked Caprese Sal-ad

When it’s time to prep a dinner meal this week, get your kids stacking the green, white and red layers of fresh basil, mozzarella and tomato. If they say their culinary creation reminds them of winter’s Christmas colors, guide them to a photo of the tricolor green, white and red Italian flag. This fun-to-make version using a surprise ingre-dient, couscous, is a tasty spring and summertime twist on Italy’s traditional caprese salad. I’ve always believed in using the right tools for the right job. In this recipe, it’s four recycled alu-minum cans. Once you’ve removed labels and both ends of four 7-8 ounce clean cans (I used 7-ounce diced green chilies cans and made sure there were no sharp edges), gather the following ingredients to create a fancy-looking presenta-tion. STACKED CAPRESE SALAD WITH COUS-COUSFour aluminum 7-8 ounce cans with both ends removed Nonstick cooking spray or olive oil 2 medium and ripe tomatoes, 1/4-inch-thick slic-es1 cup cooked couscous mixed with 2 tablespoons Italian dressing or prepared pesto8 slices fresh mozzarella cheeseFresh basil leavesParsley for garnish (optional)Balsamic vinegar1. Spray with nonstick spray or lightly wipe oil in the interior of the four cans. Set each can on end on a salad plate. 2. Trim the tomato and cheese slices to fit the in-terior of a can, then stack the individual portions in layers inside the can as follows: a tomato slice, 2 tablespoons of couscous mixture and a cheese slice. Repeat. 3. Cover with plastic wrap and press down on the stack gently with a jar or can slightly smaller than the opening of the can.4. Remove wrap and slowly lift the can to reveal the layered salad. To serve, garnish with a fresh basil leaf or sprig of parsley. Drizzle balsamic vinegar to taste. ***Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. A Naturally Clean HomeQ: I’m making a move away from using unnec-essary chemicals in my home, including clean-ing products -- not just for my family’s health but for the environment. Are there alternatives to these products that I can use? -- Janelle W., Fort Worth, TexasA: I think it’s great that you’re looking at ways to limit your family’s exposure to certain clean-ing chemicals. While you might not be able to replace every cleaning product in your home, there are alternatives to commercial products ... and they’re probably in your cupboard right now. Here are five you should have on hand at all times:¥ Lemon: A natural disinfectant that also imparts a pleasant scent. It’s no coincidence that many commercial products are lemon-scented.¥ Vinegar: More than just a good disinfectant, vinegar is effective against mold. It breaks up grease, and can be effective against some stains. ¥ Baking soda: In addition to being a good de-odorant for the fridge, baking soda can be used to gently scour surfaces without scratching.¥ Cornstarch: A gentle cleaning product that can be used to polish some furniture, clean windows, and even shampoo carpets.¥ Salt: When you need more scrubbing power than soda or starch, and surface scratches aren’t a concern, salt is an excellent substitute for scouring powders. In addition to these fairly benign cleaners, there are a few products that you should have that boost cleaning options while having a limited impact on the environment. These should be stored out of the reach of children and pets, and you should follow package instructions:¥ Soap: Look for unscented soap that doesn’t contain petroleum distillates. Soap also demol-ishes grease, and creates a slick surface that makes it easier to wash food particles and bacte-ria from dishes.¥ Borax: The commercial name for sodium bo-rate, this chemical cleans and disinfects surfaces, including wallpaper and painted walls. It’s even used to attract and poison pests like roaches. ¥ Washing soda: Also known as SAL soda, this is a mineral called sodium carbonate. It’s used for household cleaning and is often an ingredi-ent in laundry detergents and coffee pot descal-ing formulas.¥ Citrus solvent: A more powerful cleaning solu-tion, it can clean paintbrushes and help dissolve oil and grease. ¥ Isopropyl alcohol: Another common and af-fordable disinfectant straight out of your first-aid kit.How do you safely use these ingredients? There are more ways than I have room to describe. The back of the packages for many of these products -- like Borax, washing soda, citrus solvent and baking soda -- contain tips and instructions on safe use. Additionally, you can find a trove of information on the Web. Eartheasy has a page dedicated to nontoxic cleaning along with ways to use the above ingredients. Real Simple’s web-site has a page with 66 different cleaning tips.Send your questions or home tips to [email protected]. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

HUMMINGBIRDSThe tiniest birds in the world, hummingbirds, have brains that are 4.2% of their body weight, the largest proportionally to all creatures in the bird kingdom. Another amazing fact: their breast muscles are actually 30% of their body weight!• Hummingbirds, frequently called “hummers” from the sound their wings make, belong to the avian, or bird, family named Trochilidae. Swifts, another fascinating bird species, are their closest relatives. • Hummers are only found in North, South and Central America (the “new” world). They are found from Alaska and Canada in the north to Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America. They reside in deserts below sea lev-el and the Andes Mountains at elevations up to 16,000 feet (4877 m)! • There are more than 340 species of humming-birds. Most are in South America. Seventeen spe-cies occur in the United States with only three known to be in Canada. Most hummers in the U.S. are near the Mexican border. • Ecuador claims the most hummingbirds. There are 132 species found in the small country that is about the size of Colorado. • The Ruby-throated hummingbird is the most common species of hummingbird that breeds in the eastern half of North America. The most widely-distributed hummingbird in all of North America is actually the Rufous. The Rufous has been observed in every province and state except Quebec, Prince Edward Island and Hawaii. • While the Rufous winters in Mexico and Pan-ama, Ruby-throated birds winter in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean Islands, with some remaining in the Gulf states and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

HUMMINGBIRDS (continued):

• Hummingbirds are capable of going into tor-por, an unusual, very deep sleep-like state where metabolic functions slow to a minimum and an extremely low body temperature is maintained. When torpor happens for longer periods of time, it is called hibernation. Hummingbirds can go into a state of torpor any time when food condi-tions and temperature spur the need.• Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any animal on earth, excluding insects. With heart rates of hummingbirds as high as 1,260 beats per minute, they have a need to consume lots of nectar. In fact, they consume more than their weight in nectar daily! Now hummingbirds only weigh .07-.7 ounces (2-20 grams). Most animals, including humans, would be extremely obese if this kind of eating occurred! • When observing hummingbirds, most people think they use their long beaks to drink in the nectar from flowers. Actually, they lap it up with their tongues! They also eat small insects. • Swifts and hummingbirds are sometimes called “avian helicopters.” They are capable of making power strokes on up and down movements of their wings. They can beat their tiny wings from 60-200 times per second. • Hummingbirds have tremendous agility in flight. They are the only vertebrates with the ca-pability of sustained hovering, and can even fly upside down and backwards! • Migration is a phenomenal feat that many birds accomplish. Some hummingbirds travel as far as 2,000 miles (3,200 km), including a remark-able 500 mile (800 km) nonstop over the Gulf of Mexico – and they don’t have jet engines!

Will Social Security be Your Only Income? Many seniors have only Social Security for in-come when they retire: 22 percent of married couples and 47 percent of unmarried people have no additional income. Maybe it's a matter of not having saved over the years, or maybe it's having lost everything in recent years due to layoffs and unemployment. But if you have five more years until retirement, there are steps you can take now to make living on only Social Security a bit easier. ¥ Clear off your debts, especially your credit cards and vehicle. If possible, pay off your home or at least get the balance down. Keep your cred-it score high in case you need a loan for a large purchase -- the interest rate will be lower.¥ If you own your home, look at long-term maintenance. If you'll need a new roof in the next five years, do it before you retire. The same goes for big-ticket items like appliances, central air conditioning and furnace.¥ If you're willing to move, investigate states that don't tax Social Security income and/or have a lower cost of living.Assume that retirement won't mean actual retir-ing. Be prepared to take a part-time job some-where. You'll be able to earn a bit before it cuts into your Social Security benefit at the rate of one dollar for every two you make. The Social Security Administration no longer sends out the annual statement of earnings, but you can get a ballpark estimate online of what your future income will be. You can open a My-Account, or you can use one of the calculators to estimate. Before you make the jump and quit work, do a test experiment for at least six months. Spend only the amount you would receive under Social Security. Create a strict budget and stay with it. Can you do it? It will be better to know sooner rather than later.Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader ques-tions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Please send your questions or comments to [email protected].

I shall be frank and honest with my response and provide resources

where appropriate.

I have a neighbor who is a very kind little lady. She is not the prob-lem - it's her daughter. Darlene is over to help mom several times a week which should be a blessing but I'm find-ing it more of a curse. Darlene is what I call a 'whiner' - nothing is ever right or good enough for Darlene. She spends more time visiting the neighbors com-plaining about her mother than she does helping her mother. Darlene always needs something - food, money, gas, a boyfriend who doesn't cheat on her, etc., and is always in pain. I’ve noticed that she takes food and things from the house. I've taken mom to Dr.'s appointment because Darleen has her car. Mom's always running out of her pain meds because Darlene’s taken them. 'Mom' says it's easier to just give her what she wants cause she has a terrible temper. Things are getting worse all the time and I don't know what to do. I've talked with a couple of the neighbors and they are concerned too. Does 'mom' need help or is this none of my busi-ness? Troubled in Twin Lakes

Dear Troubled,What you are describing reeks of senior abuse and needs to be addressed before it gets even worse. Are there signs of physical abuse in ad-dition to the financial and I'm betting emotional and verbal abuse? Unfortunately mom has al-lowed this to develop to it's current state. That does not mean it should be condoned or allowed to continue. Call Area Agency on Aging. Their number is (208) 667-3179. Please share your concerns with them. It sounds like 'mom' needs protection from her daughter. Taking ad-vantage of a person in any manner - especially their medications and money, is a crime. No one should suffer abuse or live in fear, especially our elderly. Thanks for caring.
