Here are the cold hard facts about cold hard ice! •About 10% of the Earth’s land massand7%ofitsoceansarecoveredbyice.Closeto98%ofAntarctica,locatedattheEarth’sSouthPole,iscoveredbyiceaveragingatleastamile(1.6km)in thickness.Its icesheetholdsabout90%oftheplanet’sfreshwater. •Anicesheetformswhensnowthat falls inwinter does notmelt entirely overthesummermonths.Afterthousandsofyearsofthisprocess,thelayerspileupandcompressintothick, dense sheets of ice. In order to be clas-sifiedasanicesheet,itmustextendmorethan20,000 sq.miles (50,000 sq. km).Antarctica’sicesheetcoversalmost5.4millionsq.miles(14millionsq.km),which isabout the sizeof theU.S.andMexicocombined.Atonespottheiceis 2.96 miles (4.76 km) thick. Greenland, theworld’s largest island,hasan ice sheetextend-ing656,000sq.miles(1.7millionsq.km),aboutthreetimesthesizeofTexas. •Thesizeofanicebergvariesbetween3.3 ft. and 246 ft. (1 to 75m) above the sea,weighing between 100,000 and 200,000 tons.Aboutone-ninthofaniceberg’svolumeisabovewater. It’s very challenging to determine theshapeofthatportionthatliesunderwater.

ICY INFO (continued): • Icebergs are composed of freshwatericethathasbrokenoffaglacieroraniceshelf,causing them tofloat freely in the openwater.Duringthewarmerweatherofspringandsum-mer,theformationoficebergsincreasesastheyseparatefromtheGreenlandandAntarcticaicesheets and fromother outlying glaciers.About15,000icebergsseparatefromGreenlandeveryyear,butmostmeltlongbeforeenteringtheAt-lanticOcean.Less than400willflowsouthofNewfoundlandintotheNorthAtlantic. • Iceberg Alley is the area about 250miles (402 km) southeast of Newfoundland,Canada.ThisiswheretheTitanicstruckanice-bergandsankinAprilof1912.Priortothatdi-saster,whichcaused1,500deaths,therewasnosystemtotrackicebergsandprotectshipsfromcollision.Immediately,theU.S.Navybeganpa-trollingthewaters,andthefollowingyearaper-manent international system was created. •About93%oftheworld’sicebergsarefoundintheAntarctic,andtheyaremuchlargerthantheirnortherncounterparts.Thelargestice-bergonrecordwassightedinthePacificOceanin1956andmeasured60x208miles(97x335km),withover12,000sq.miles(31,000sq.km)of area, larger than thecountryofBelgium.
