Oregon charms Dutch coupleWhen Jeanne van den Meiracker gets out of bed

at home these days, she can go outside and see the snow-capped Cascade Mountains. It’s like nothing she ever saw when she lived in the Netherlands – and she loves it.

Since November of last year, Meiracker and her husband, Huub Bertens, have lived in Bend OR, in high desert part of the state. She is working part-time as a tournament director for the ACBL. He is busy

playing bridge for pay. Before they left for America, Meiracker and

Bertens lived in Tilburg, about 50 miles from Rotterdam. She worked for many years as a medical analyst – commuting three hours a day to and from Rotterdam – before joining the staff of the Dutch Bridge Federation about three years ago.

Because Bertens was traveling to the U.S. frequently to play, they decided it made sense to consider moving across the Atlantic.

A friend offered the use of her house in Bend, and they quickly accepted.

Meiracker says she liked America from the first time she visited. That was in 2006, when Bertens and his regular partner, Ton Bakkeren, won the prestigious Cavendish Invitational Pairs in Las Vegas.

Bend, she says, is perfect for a person with athsma, which she has. Bend is about one-third the size of Tilburg and the dry desert air has helped immensely with her breathing problems.

New Life MastersJoanne Kunz of Daytona Beach FL became

a Life Master playing in the three-session KO on Monday. Kunz played with teammates Alice Rumana, Shari Hildebrandt and Carolyn Calloway of Palm Coast FL.

Partners Jim Felch of Bristol NH and Rick Weinstein of Manchester NH each became Life Masters playing in Wednesday’s Compact KO. Felch (who celebrated his birthday on the same day) needed 4.6 gold points, while Weinstein needed 1.1. They earned more than five gold points in the event, enough to make them LMs and Bronze LMs at the same time.

Linda Harris of Macon GA, playing with partner Sheila Paul, won Wednesday’s Gold Rush Pairs, earning almost 18 gold points and making Harris a Life Master.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSHave you discussed?

By Brent Manley

Crazy scores during midnight games – where the beer often flows – are not unusual. One late night, the director thought one particular score was worth notice. After the TD announced that one of the competitors had managed minus 3400, someone from the back of the room yelled, “Could you have made it on a different line of play?”

The hapless declarer in this case might well have started with one of the undisciplined weak two-bids that have gained traction with some players. Granted, they can wreak havoc, but the partnership willing to open 2♦ on six to the jack and a weak hand must have a high tolerance for four-digit minuses.

So, have you and your partner decided on a “style” for your weak two-bids? There are pluses and minuses to both styles. If your approach is too conservative, you will miss out on opportunities to make life difficult for the opponents. If you are too aggressive, you will often find yourself in a top-or-bottom situation, and if your style is really out there, it can be tough on the partnership.

For partnerships committed to weak two-bids that can vary widely in strength and suit quality, there is the convention invented by Harold Ogust.

When partner opens a weak two-bid, 2NT by responder asks for more information. Opener’s responses:

3♣ = minimum strength, poor suit3♦ = minimum strength, good suit3♥ = maximum strength, poor suit3♠ = maximum strength, good suit3NT = solid suit (six to the A-K-Q)In the original version of this convention, the

3♦ and 3♥ bids were reversed. You and your partner should decide what

constitutes a “good” suit – perhaps two of the top three honors or three of the top five. Other items for discussion:

Can any five-card suit can be defined as “good?”

Is it okay to have a four-card major suit on the side? How about a side void?

Is it okay to have a seven-card suit?

Is a new suit by responder forcing? If you play it as non-forcing by an unpassed hand (Alertable, by the way), what does responder do with a strong hand and a strong suit? In such a case, responder would start with 2NT.

When the opponents start with a weak two-bid, do you and partner have agreements about how you compete? Takeout doubles, of course, will necessarily be somewhat aggressive. You can’t sit back and wait for the ideal hand to come along. If you do, you will be recording lots of bad scores.

As for bidding instead of doubling, a handy tool is the Rule of 7 or 8. When you are considering whether to bid directly over an opening two-bid, proceed with the expectation that your partner will have 7 to 8 high-card points. If your hand is worth a bid on that basis, get in there and fight. If partner has the expected high-card strength, he must be careful about raising without good reason – e.g., extra trump support and perhaps a singleton or void. A raise usually shows a bit more than 7-8 HCP.

When you have a hand good enough to be in game if partner has the expected strength, you must make a jump bid over the weak two: e.g., 2♥ – 3♠. This tells partner that if he has the expected HCP and any kind of trump support, he should raise to game.

Opening lead: ♣K.Bidding commentary: Strong eight-card suits

with less than opening-bid strength (fewer than 10

HCP) should open four, not three! North checks for aces and bids the slam. South must have a play for slam with the North hand as dummy.

Defensive commentary: When holding the K-Q-J of a suit along with a side-suit ace, the K-Q-J suit is the preferred lead. Also, when dummy tables, East knows that West has an ace.

Play commentary: South has two chances to make this contract, not one! He crosses to the closed hand with a trump and leads a spade, not a diamond! If West has the ♠A, the diamond finesse is not necessary. After West takes the ♠A, the ♠K furnishes a diamond discard. If East has the ♠A, a diamond finesse is still available. In effect, declarer is taking two finesses. If the diamond finesse is taken first and it loses, declarer is down even though West may have the ♠A. Two chances are better than one.

When declarer has a singleton facing a king plus another finesse available in a long suit and declarer can afford to lose one trick, lead the singleton suit first. If the ace is well placed, it may mean no finesse will be necessary in the longer suit.

It’s hard to find two players who enjoy bridge more than Sandi Jones and Lois Mann, who live on Long Island in New York. They have been playing at Summer NABCs – and having a few adventures away from the table – since 2008. They may not know how to execute a backwash squeeze, but they are grand masters at fun.

On their way to the titleThe team captained by Dee Adams of Memphis

started the second day of the Truscott/U.S. Playing Card Senior Swiss Teams in 14th place.

They had moved up in the standings by the halfway point of the final, and kept the momentum going in the second half. This deal helped them to a near blitz in round five.

The lineup for the Adams team was Mark Itabashi – Fred Hamilton and John Sutherlin – Dan Morse.

Dlr: South ♠ Q 6 Vul: None ♥ A K 10 4 ♦ 10 8 2 ♣ J 7 6 2 ♠ A 8 4 3 ♠ J 10 5 2 ♥ Q J 8 3 ♥ 7 5 2 ♦ K Q 4 ♦ 9 6 5 3 ♣ K 10 ♣ Q 8 ♠ K 9 7 ♥ 9 6 ♦ A J 7 ♣ A 9 5 4 3

West North East South Hamilton Itabashi 1♣ 1NT Dbl Pass Pass Redbl Pass 2♦ Dbl All Pass

Itabashi got off to the good lead of the ♥9, covered by the queen and king. Hamilton shifted to the ♠Q, taken by declarer in dummy with the ace. Declarer had no quick way to get to his hand, so he played the ♦K. Itabashi took the trump ace and continued with his other heart. Hamilton won the ♥10 and fired back a spade. Itabashi won the ♠K and gave Hamilton a ruff. Hamilton then cashed the ♥A and continued the suit. Itabashi ruffed and cashed the ♣A for three down and plus 500. It was a 9-IMP gain because North-South at the other table were plus 110 in 3♣.

Adams won the match easily and scored just as well in the following match, thanks to good judgment by Hamilton in a competitive auction.

Dlr: East ♠ — Vul: Both ♥ J 7 3 2 ♦ K Q J 10 9 8 7 4 ♣ 8 ♠ A J 8 6 5 4 ♠ Q 7 3 2 ♥ 5 ♥ A 9 6 ♦ 6 3 ♦ 5 ♣ K 10 6 2 ♣ A J 7 5 4 ♠ K 10 9 ♥ K Q 10 8 4 ♦ A 2 ♣ Q 9 3

West North East South Hamilton Itabashi 1♣ 1♥ 1♠ 5♦ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

If East could see all the cards, he would have led the ♥A and given his partner two heart ruffs, getting back in with a club to the ace. Even if East had made the unlikely lead of the ♥A, it would have been tough for him to envision a singleton heart with his partner considering how the bidding went.

It’s worth noting that with South as declarer in 5♥, West has to lead a diamond to set up a ruff, which can be taken by East only if he underleads the ♣A on coming in with the ♥A. That’s strictly double-dummy stuff.

In any case, East led a low spade against 5♦ doubled. Hamilton ruffed, pulled trumps and knocked out the ♥A for plus 750 and a 14-IMP gain. At the other table, East-West bid on to 5♠, which makes (on the bidding, West will almost certainly guess clubs). North then bid on to 6♦, doubled and one down for minus 200. That was 14 IMPs to the eventual winners.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

Master teachers namedThe American Bridge Teachers’ Association

annually considers candidates for the association’s highest designation – master teacher. This year, four teachers were awarded the designation. They are:

Sam Marks – Atlanta GAHank Meyer – Greenbelt MDJeff Schuett – Riverwoods ILLinda Tuff – Halifax NS

To become a master teacher, a candidate must demonstrate to a panel of peers that they possess outstanding teaching skills and knowledge of solving bridge problems.

Nine Ever Ten Never

by Murat Molva

In the second round of the Junior Swiss Teams, this was Board 15:

Dlr: South ♠ A Q 8 2 Vul: N-S ♥ J 10 ♦ A 9 8 7 ♣ 9 3 2 ♠ 9 6 5 3 ♠ J 10 7 ♥ 7 ♥ K Q 9 8 ♦ Q 6 5 2 ♦ K 4 ♣ K 10 7 4 ♣ Q 8 6 5 ♠ K 4 ♥ A 6 5 4 3 2 ♦ J 10 3 ♣ A J

West North East South Seshimo Kaplan Oyama Agica 1♥ Pass 1♠ Pass 2♥ Pass 3♥ All Pass

Put yourself into South player Marius Agica’s (USA) shoes. You have a nice six-card suit and useful looking side values in the other suits, and your partner invites you to game. You are vulnerable, so a nice game bonus is waving to you. It is teams, so you are not worried about any pairs strategies or the rest of the field. You only have to think about your teammates at the other table. Would you not be tempted to bid four hearts? I am sure many of us would. Well Agica did not. And he was dead on target. Although dummy appeared with excellent values too, nine tricks were the limit. Well judged.

At the other table, the Japanese pair Hashimoto–Kikuchi had exactly the same auction, but at the point where Agica passed, Kikuchi bid four hearts. He just needed trumps to split 3-2. Not today. Down one and 6 IMPs to the team War of Roses.

Slam? What Slam?

by Murat Molva

It has happened to all of us. After the session, teammates ask if we could find the slam on a particular, and we reply “Slam? What slam?”

This was Board 6 of the fourth round of the Swiss.

Dlr: East ♠ 6 3 Vul: E-W ♥ K Q 10 8 7 6 2 ♦ Q 8 3 ♣ Q ♠ A 9 8 ♠ J 10 7 5 4 ♥ A 9 ♥ 5 4 3 ♦ 5 4 2 ♦ – ♣ A 9 4 3 2 ♣ K 10 7 6 5 ♠ K Q 2 ♥ J ♦ A K J 10 9 7 6 ♣ J 8

As you can see, six clubs is on for East-West with a total combined high-card-point total of only sixteen.

Aside from the spade king-queen being onside, the key point of the deal is that even if a heart is led against the slam, South, when he gets in with his spade trick, will not be able to cash a heart trick, and declarer will discard West’s heart loser on the established spade winners.

The frequency charts show two six diamonds doubled contracts, so we could assume that Australia and Argentina were able to bid the slam. Well done.

This board created some tension at the table I was watching:

West North East South Linz Hashimoto Wernis Kikuchi Pass 1♦ Pass 1♥ Dble 3♦ Pass 4♣ Pass 4♠ Pass 5♦ All Pass

Probably, the three-diamond bid combined with the adverse vulnerability prevented West, Marianna Linz (USA), from overcalling on the first round, but she could have come closer to bidding something at her second turn after her partner, Rebecca Wernis, indicated length in both black suits. (And, yes, perhaps East should have intervened with one notrump to show at least 5-5 in the unbid suits.) But anyway, the Japanese pair reached a normal five-diamond contract.

West first led her spade ace and then her club ace. Correctly deciding that if the heart ace was cashing there was no rush to take it, she continued with the spade nine.

Tadahiro Kikuchi took this with his king and, without ruffing his second club, played three rounds of trumps ending in dummy. Since there were only hearts remaining in dummy, he led a heart to West’s ace. West continued with a spade, which declarer ruffed! South then played a few more trumps and claimed the remainder conceding a club. But the spade queen was clearly visible in his hand. The girls were quick to call the TD, who started investigations during which I was consulted as a witness. Declarer was given a two-trick penalty and the final result was down four.

Rather than ruffing a trick that already belonged to him, Kikuchi would have been better advised to ruff one of the aces that West cashed. That –- in theory – would have allowed him to make the contract. J

A Jolly Good Slam

by Murat Molva

Any slam that makes can be classified as belonging to the jolly good category. At least for the declaring side anyway. This was Board 9 in the fourth round of the Swiss:

Dlr: North ♠ J 4 3 Vul: E-W ♥ 9 8 ♦ 10 6 3 ♣ A 9 8 7 5 ♠ 2 ♠ A K Q 10 8 6 5 ♥ J 10 7 3 ♥ A ♦ A Q 8 2 ♦ 7 5 4 ♣ K Q 3 2 ♣ J 10 ♠ 9 7 ♥ K Q 6 5 4 2 ♦ K J 9 ♣ 6 4

This good slam was reached by only two pairs in the Juniors, and none of the Youngsters could bid it. (Yes, all right, it is better played by West, but how would one manage that when using a natural system? That East hand is too strong for Namyats.)

West North East South Koclar Aydogdu Pass 1♠ 2♥ Dble Pass 3♥ Pass 3NT Pass 4♠ Pass 5♠ Pass 6♠ All Pass

Erkmen Aydogdu (Turkey) showed a good hand with his three-heart cue-bid. But how good? When he heard his partner remove three notrump to four spades, Akin Koclar reasoned that if they did not have two quick heart losers, and if the trump quality was good, there should be a good play for slam. So he came up with a five-spade raise to convey his thoughts. East had all that was required, so he just bid the slam.

West North East South Jolly Cavalier Pass 1♠ 3♥ 3NT Pass 4♣ Pass 5♣ Pass 6♠ All Pass

Here, the bid of three notrump by Christian Jolly (USA) gave East, Andrew Cavalier, more hopes to reach a slam. But what to bid? Andrew found a four-club rebid that the NASA engineers are still trying to analyze. Is it a fake control-bid (cue-bid) to inhibit a club lead? Or is it a high-tech conventional bid that says “Partner I have no controls in clubs and diamonds, but I just love the rest of my hand”? West, meanwhile, was quite satisfied with the way things were going. He showed his club support by raising to five clubs. Now Cavalier probably thought that things could get out of hand if he found another technical bid. So he just blasted the slam, and all was well.

East’s bidding was cavalier, but in the end he and his partner were jolly happy with the result!

Back to the Pas in the Pairs

by Phillip Alder

There were several other interesting boards in the three pair events.

Let’s start with surely the biggest plus score we will see at this tournament -- if not this year. It occurred on Board 10 of the first final session in the junior event.

First, though, let’s set the scene. On the previous deal, against the normal contract of four hearts by North, East had made the abnormal lead of a low spade from ace-fourth. This had conceded an overtrick, partner having queen-jack-fourth and declarer king-third. A second overtrick had been surrender with inaccurate discarding. Minus 480 was a bottom for East-West. Sylvia Shi admitted that she was “on tilt,” determined to get the matchpoints back.

Dlr: East ♠ 9 6 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ Q 2 ♦ 6 ♣ K 10 9 4 3 2 ♠ J 5 ♠ 10 8 ♥ A 9 5 ♥ K J 10 8 7 6 4 ♦ A J 9 8 4 3 2 ♦ K Q 10 7 ♣ A ♣ – ♠ A K Q 7 2 ♥ 3 ♦ 5 ♣ Q J 8 7 6 5

West North East South Shi Prairie 4♥ 4♠ 6♥ 6♠ Pass Pass 7♥! Dble Pass Pass Redble! Pass Pass Pass

West had a tough choice over four spades because she did not have a bid that invited a slam and asked partner for a spade control. But, as a four-heart opening bid often includes short spades, West decided to jump to slam.

Then North, trusting his opponent, sacrificed in six spades.

After two passes, Shi was up at the plate again. She knew that she could double six spades and probably get 500 or 800, but that would not compensate for 1430 in six hearts.

Still “on tilt,” Shi bid seven hearts.North, with no defensive tricks, surprisingly

doubled this. After two more passes, Shi decided that seven

hearts doubled and down one was probably going to be a zero. So she raised the ante by redoubling. She also wondered if this might persuade her opponents to bid seven spades. But no. And now South was on lead.

Reasonably assuming that West had to be void in spades, and perhaps wondering if his partner’s double was a Lightner, South led a club.

Seven hearts redoubled plus two vulnerable is 3740, but the overtricks were not permitted. Still, plus 2940 was a nice top and resulted in an exactly average two-board round!

In the Girls Final, the winners, Giorgia Botta and Margherita Chavarria from Italy, began the last day in third place. But they started perfectly on the first board of the penultimate session.

Dlr: East ♠ 8 5 Vul: Both ♥ Q 5 ♦ A J 7 6 5 2 ♣ A 4 3 ♠ J 10 9 6 2 ♠ A K Q 4 3 ♥ 9 3 2 ♥ A J 7 6 ♦ 9 4 ♦ K 3 ♣ 8 5 2 ♣ 10 7 ♠ 7 ♥ K 10 8 4 ♦ Q 10 8 ♣ K Q J 9 6

West North East South Chavarria Jin Botta Yuan 1♠ 2♣ 3♠ Dble Pass 4♥ Pass 5♣ Dble All Pass

South should have made a takeout double over one spade. But when she overcalled two clubs, Chavarria produced a very brave pre-emptive three-spade raise. When one makes that bid with so few high-card points, one usually has a singleton or a void somewhere. But it worked well. North doubled to show some points, South hoped her partner had four or five hearts, and Botta happily doubled North’s five-club rescue.

South lost one spade, one heart and one diamond, East cashing her heart ace when in with the diamond king.

Plus 200 was 6 out of 6 for East-West.The next two boards were flat. In the second

set, the first board was also average. But then the Italians got a top when one of their opponents passed a forcing bid. The auction went one diamond-(one heart)- two clubs-all pass. Plus 130 did not trouble the scorers when the other three pairs were bidding and making game. What was even more strange was that the opener had 15 high-card points, three aces and one king. So she would have been worth a move toward game opposite a nonforcing two-club response (what is known as a negative free bid).

Boards 19 and 20 helped the cause of the American bronze medalists. First, Isha Thapa got a favorable lead that let her take twelve tricks in three clubs, for 5 matchpoints out of 6. Then North made a textbook error.

Dlr: West ♠ J 5 3 Vul: Both ♥ 9 8 2 ♦ A Q J 9 8 7 ♣ 3 ♠ K 9 7 6 2 ♠ Q 10 ♥ 10 6 5 3 ♥ A K Q ♦ 3 ♦ K 10 5 ♣ Q 8 5 ♣ K J 10 9 2 ♠ A 8 4 ♥ J 7 4 ♦ 6 4 2 ♣ A 7 6 4

West North East South Thapa Arbit Pass 2♦ Dble 3♦ 3♠ Pass 3NT All Pass

South led the diamond four. North, who knew declarer had the king, should have played her jack. And if she were allowed to take the trick, she should have continued with a low diamond (or the queen). When declarer has one stopper in the suit you are trying to establish, work to make her use it up as quickly as possible.

However, North won the first trick with her ace and returned the jack. When she took that trick too, she shifted to the heart nine. Julie Arbit won and drove out the club ace. South took the third round and returned a heart. East finished the clubs, then led the spade queen to establish her ninth trick.

Plus 600 was a cold top.The final board of the girls event helped the

silver medalists.

Dlr: East ♠ 4 2 Vul: None ♥ Q 9 8 6 ♦ K Q J 6 5 ♣ 9 5 ♠ A K J 10 8 7 ♠ Q 9 6 ♥ 10 7 3 ♥ A ♦ 8 7 ♦ 10 9 4 3 2 ♣ A 4 ♣ K 8 6 2 ♠ 5 3 ♥ K J 5 4 2 ♦ A ♣ Q J 10 7 3

West North East South Jin Suarez Yuan de Jesus Pass 1♥ 1♠ 4♥ All Pass

This contract went the obvious down two, but minus 100 was worth 5 matchpoints out of 6 to North-South.

North did well to drive straight to game, but East should have risked a card-showing double. Then West, who knewsher partner was very short in hearts, would probably have converted to four spades, which you will have noticed could have been made with an overtrick even after a trump lead.

Stern at the Five-Levelby David Stern

This is an expression my partner has for my passion for bidding over the opponents at the five-level – usually incorrectly, I might add. The following caught my attention for some good five-level action in Round 3 of the Teams.

Dlr: West ♠ K J 9 8 7 6 4 2 Vul: None ♥ – ♦ 10 7 ♣ A 7 3 ♠ 10 5 3 ♠ Q ♥ A K Q 4 2 ♥ J 10 9 8 6 5 3 ♦ K 5 ♦ 9 6 2 ♣ 6 5 2 ♣ K 10 ♠ A ♥ 7 ♦ A Q J 8 4 3 ♣ Q J 9 8 4

Frequencies: +510x3, +450x1, +300x1, +100x3, +50x3, -420x1

The auctions that I watched varied, but the

following was common.

West North East South 1♥ 4♠ 5♥ Dble Pass Pass Pass

This was the sequence at another table:

West North East South 1♥ 1♠ 4♥ 5♣ 5♥ Pass Pass Dble Pass Pass Pass

Clearly North hadn’t eaten his power food for breakfast, electing to bid just one spade with his eight-card suit.

A popular treatment over the four-heart response in this auction is four notrump showing two places to play, rather than the “guessing” five-club bid chosen by South holding five clubs and six diamonds.

West North East South 1♥ 3♠ 4♥ 4♠ Pass Pass 5♥ Pass Pass 5♠ All Pass

South created a “winning” score when she didn’t double five hearts, perhaps discouraged from doing so by partner’s three-spade rather than four-spade bid.

They do say that pre-emptors should not bid twice, but having undercooked the hand with the initial three-spade bid, I don’t think we can blame North for bidding five spades after his partner supported spades and failed to double five hearts.

Journalists tend to shy away from Deep Finesse and rely on their own analytical skills,1 but I like to use DF as a backup for my less-than-perfect analytical skills. DF says you can make six spades only by South -- can you see why?

A diamond lead from East will excommunicate your dummy and prevent you from being able to throw your club losers away on diamonds provided West wins with the diamond king and continues with a diamond.

Swingy Setby David Stern

Round 5 of the Swiss (KO) Teams proved to be a wild affair with an average swing of just over 5 IMPs per board at each of the six tables in the Junior Teams. The first board was right on target as pairs guessed what the best spot was and what should be trumps.

Dlr: North ♠ K J 8 7 2 Vul: None ♥ K 8 ♦ 9 8 6 5 2 ♣ 3 ♠ 10 9 5 4 3 ♠ A Q ♥ A J 9 ♥ Q 6 4 3 ♦ K 4 ♦ 10 ♣ A K J ♣ 10 8 6 5 4 2 ♠ 6 ♥ 10 7 5 2 ♦ A Q J 7 3 ♣ Q 9 7

At the Open Room table where California Aces played Turkiye:

West North East South Koclar Lee Aydogdu Wessels Pass Pass Pass 1NT 2♦ Dble 4♦ 4♠ Pass 5♣ All Pass

East won the spade lead and took dummy’s two top clubs. Now he had to go down one.

In the Closed Room they stopped in four clubs after:

West North East South Rosenberg Osgur Lin Uslupehlivan Pass Pass 1♦ 1NT 3♦ 4♣ All Pass

Declarer took the same ten tricks.

Board four was a lost opportunity for the California Aces:

Dlr: West ♠ 7 6 2 Vul: Both ♥ A 6 ♦ 9 8 7 3 ♣ K 9 8 3 ♠ T 9 5 ♠ J 4 3 ♥ K Q 8 3 2 ♥ J 9 7 4 ♦ 4 ♦ K Q J 6 5 ♣ Q T 7 2 ♣ J ♠ A K Q 8 ♥ T 5 ♦ A T 2 ♣ A 6 5 4

Something strange happened on this board. The Open Room auction seemed simple and normal and perhaps likely to lead to a pickup when North-South avoided a three-notrump game with their combined 24-count, taking eight tricks in one notrump for plus 120.

West North East South Koclar Lee Aydogdu Wessels Pass Pass 1♦ 1NT Pass Pass Pass

In the Closed Room, however:

West North East South Rosenberg Osgur Lin Uslupehlivan

Pass Pass Pass 1♣ 1♥ 2♣ 3♥ Dble Pass 3NT All Pass

East chose to lead the diamond king. This was not immediately fatal, but when North ducked, East continued with the diamond queen. The declarer won and played a third diamond to establish the diamond nine as his ninth trick after spades broke. I have some sympathy for East persisting with diamonds, but as my sage mother says, “You never have to apologise for leading partner’s suit.”

Board 9 featured a big swing in three of the six matches. Murat Molva describes the action at the two tables where the slam made in his article titled A Jolly Good Slam. Please excuse the small amount of repetition here.

Dlr: North ♠ J 4 3 Vul: E-W ♥ 9 8 ♦ 10 6 3 ♣ A 9 8 7 5 ♠ 2 ♠ A K Q 10 8 6 5 ♥ J 10 7 3 ♥ A ♦ A Q 8 2 ♦ 7 5 4 ♣ K Q 3 2 ♣ J 10 ♠ 9 7 ♥ K Q 6 5 4 2 ♦ K J 9 ♣ 6 4

West North East South Koclar Lee Aydogdu Wessels Pass 1♠ 2♥ Dble Pass 3♥ Pass 3NT Pass 4♠ Pass 5♠ Pass 6♠ All Pass

The three-heart inquiry for a stopper followed by the bid of four spades without support from partner showed mild slam interest, which West eagerly accepted with limited heart values. This made the obvious 12 tricks after the heart-king lead.

In the Closed Room, Rosenberg’s more unilateral action substantially reduced the chances of reaching slam.

West North East South Rosenberg Osgur Lin Uslupehlivan Pass 1♠ 2♥ 3NT Pass Pass Pass

I’m not sure I could think of an auction that would result in a final contract of three spades, but we’ll leave that for another time.

After the trading of IMPs in this match, California Aces beat Turkiye 39-33 to put them in second place.

works at big tournaments organized by the World Bridge Federation and the European Bridge League, and at the Cavendish, which will take place this year in Monaco.

She is in Atlanta working as a TD at the Summer NABC. Bertens is playing in the Spingold Knockout Teams on the Mary Ann Berg squad.

Thanks to help from American bridge players, Meiracker and Bertens possess the coveted “green cards” that allow them to work in the U.S., and she recently received a promotion from the ACBL.

One of Meiracker’s most memorable moments as a TD occurred during the Bermuda Bowl in Monte Carlo in 2003. The Nick Nickell team, trailing Italy by 22 IMPs with two boards to play in the event, had scored 11 IMPs on the penultimate board and were in a position to win as they defended 5♦ doubled (Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell were plus 400 against 4♥ in the other room). Two down for plus 300 meant 12 IMPs and a win for Nickell. One down and the match would have been tied, forcing an eight-board playoff.

In the room where Meiracker was working, Lorenzo Lauria was playing the dummy himself after his partner, Alfredo Versace, had left the room.

Near the end of the deal, Paul Soloway was on lead to declarer’s left and could have assured two down by cashing a heart, Lauria having to follow. Instead, Soloway shocked the vugraph audience by playing a spade to dummy, which held the good ♠Q and four low spades. Lauria had no spades, so

his losing heart could have gone on the queen, but because he and everyone else was expecting a heart from Soloway, Lauria pulled the ♠7 from dummy and was surprised when Hamman covered with the 10. The Americans were back to down two and a victory in the Bermuda Bowl.

A TD was called, and it was Meiracker. She ruled that because Lauria had touched the ♠7, he could not change his play to the queen. The ruling was appealed and upheld, and the Nickell team had another world championship, 304-303.

Meiracker says the ruling was initially difficult because Soloway and Hamman were silent about what happened, and there was no video of the play or other witnesses.

As Meiracker was walking back to her hotel after the awards ceremony, a big car pulled up beside her in the street. Giorgio Duboin, a member of the Italian team, got out. He hugged Meiracker and told her, “You made the right ruling.”

At home in Oregon, Meiracker is playing a bit of bridge and working at tournaments in the West. She is also on the TD list for the ACBL’s three big tournaments each year and has been working with other directors answering rulings questions from members.

Bertens has his eye on next year’s United States Bridge Championship, which will select teams to represent the U.S. in the 2014 World Bridge Series Championships. He has been playing in NABC’s and other ACBL tournaments for nearly a decade.

Their new life in America has them excited about the future. Says Bertens, “We should have done this 10 years ago.”

Thursday InsiderThe Insider’s columns have been hit or miss,

shorter than usual, and they have fallen below the normal low bar for journalistic adequacy he has previously established for himself. The easy reason for this is that Daily Bulletin space is somewhat restricted due to coverage of the WBF event. The printer has limited the Bulletin Boys to a maximum of 24 pages. The WBF has been promised four pages for coverage of their event. With many, many events to report, as well as results from thousands of tables of play and the usual important information to share (a box everyday on page one telling you to go to page two for details, another box with the table count through Monday, the ads for Monaco, Bermuda, Cuba and Panama Canal and, of course, the mostly complete bridge play schedules), there just hasn’t been room for the Insider’s random thoughts and observations. The Insider will be back at full power come Phoenix.

For now, the Insider has been limited to 325 words per column. And these words have to be ones that the average NABC attendee can recognize – the Insider has had to refrain from his usual practice of making up words to fit the storyline. So with that in mind, AMG will have a flip chart at her station today: Stop by and share your favorite word that describes bridge, the NABCs or life on the tournament trail. Write down a regular word in a different context, some arcane word that describes life in the bridge world or just make up a word for the entertainment of all of us. She’ll want the word and your definition of it. Keep it (relatively) clean and have fun. She’ll keep the flip chart up through Friday to give everyone a chance to contribute. The Insider will contribute several of his own words to seed the pot. The best words will be “borrowed” for inclusion in Saturday’s Insider. (325 words exactly!)

Thanks, Play BridgeThe Atlanta NABC Planning Committee would

like to recognize and thank Ina Parry and the many volunteers from the Play Bridge club in Atlanta who have worked not only on their designated day (August 5), but have given generously of their time throughout the tournament. The club recruited more

volunteers than any other club. It really does make a difference!

Today’s Bridge Events

Today’s game honoreesEdgar Gay (1923-1981) Edgar loved bridge. He played, directed and

taught whenever and wherever there was a need. From community centers to senior centers to venues opened specifically for bridge, he was there. As a player, he became a Life Master in 1966, an accomplishment of which he was extraordinarily proud. In addition to playing and teaching bridge, he began directing tournaments and actively participated on the board of Unit 114, including one term as president in the late 1960s. Edgar changed the course of tournament bridge in Atlanta when he became tournament chairman and dramatically increased attendance and player enjoyment.

Edgar was born in Berlin. In 1938 his family decided to leave Germany. They were scheduled to sail to Cuba on the SS St. Louis, but they arrived at the dock early and left on another ship, the Iberia,

which took them safely to Cuba. As it turned out, the St. Louis was not allowed to dock anywhere and was returned to Germany.

Edgar owned a clothing store in Atlanta. As a father, he coached both boys’ baseball and girls’ softball, and when Druid Hills High School first organized a soccer team, he attended practices as a coach/consultant and assisted the school’s first team coming in third in the State.

Edgar Gay was inducted into the Georgia Bridge Hall of Fame in 1984, earning a spot because of his extraordinary contributions and service to Georgia bridge, more so than for his accomplishments as a player. Nonetheless, Edgar was proud of every one of his lifetime total of 890.12 master points.

Nancy Hetsko (1954-2012)Nancy was a true ambassador of bridge. She

served as a board member of the Duplicate Bridge Association of Atlanta, Unit 114 Secretary and President, and served on the board of District 7 and the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference. She started playing duplicate in the late 1980s and was a Diamond Life Master.

Nancy was a CPA. She also assisted her long-time partner, Larry Rich, in the operation of the Alpharetta Duplicate Bridge Club. Besides directing, she taught lessons to new players and advancing players. She was very proud of the newcomers she mentored.

Although very competitive, Nancy was a true lady at and away from the table. She was a wonderful partner and teammate, never criticizing any results, a rare find in the bridge world!
