Attached to this newsletter is the 2020 request form. The forms are due to the office by Monday Sep 9th. Due to the complexity of the grade selection process, no late requests can be accepted. Parents will be advised of the 2020 classes in early December. Please note that the school will put the needs of students first at all times and that whilst we endeavour to meet all requests, on occasion, some requests may not be possible. NAPLAN The 2019 NAPLAN results are on their way and I would remind all families of children who are receiving their results, to consider the positives of your child’s achievements first and foremost. NAPLAN is Australia’s only standardised testing, but given it only happens every two years for each child from Years 3 – 9, it is a snapshot in time. It has been well publicised that this year’s online tests did not go according to plan, but nevertheless, as a school, we use the individual results to see if there are any gaps in student learning, to identify how our classes are travelling and consider where we may need to tweak our practice. In some cases, students do exceedingly well, in others, they underperform on the day. That’s life. As much as I’d prefer my Hawks to win every game, I know that the reality is different. As a school, whilst our NAPLAN results are traditionally strong, that is not what drives us. A far better measure is built over time spent with your children, getting to know them and understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Yes, we triangulate the NAPLAN data with teacher judgments and other assessments, so as a result, the information you receive in reports if a far better indicator of your child’s progress and their individual point of need. As I have said many times before, we aim to achieve 18 months growth in any calendar year, with a minimum of 12 months growth. Whilst this is the aim, we also recognise that if we can achieve the minimum every time, with a few years of the loftier goal along the way, then every child leaves MPS ready for secondary school with a strong academic and social base. In the end, it is the collective efforts of parents, teachers and the school as a whole that will get results. Having said that, I look forward to the results, as I’m confident our students will have put their best foot forward. Principals Message Continued:

Construction Update If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! We unfortunately had a delay due to needing a decision

on the access point to the new building site. Hopefully this will be resolved this week and construction

will commence next Monday. What we do know is that the sensory playground will commence

construction on Monday. We expect to have this playground up and running by early Term 4. The

area from the end of the prep building, Ms. Ly’s corner, through the NT area of our map and back to

the north east corner of Mr. Stokes’ room will be securely fenced off whilst construction is underway.

Unfortunately, given the proposed location for the new big playground, we will have to hold off on

construction until the summer months. We are seeking to locate the playground just south of the new

stadium, however to do this, we must wait until some services are run to the site from the south, directly

through the playground footprint. Both can operate exclusively of each other, but we need to allow

the builders time to turn off water to the school during the long break in order to cause the least

amount of disruption to students. Given this, Mr. Hattwell is instructing the playground provider to order

the equipment and we hope to arrange a date for installation early in the new year.

Happy Father’s Day To all the dads, have a great day on Sunday. I hope the kids bring you breakfast in bed, mow the

lawn, take out the bins and generally spoil you all day. Remember, our Father’s day breakfast is

tomorrow morning (Friday), so come along a little early to enjoy some breakfast and perhaps have a

chat with the other dads.

The (newly) annual Market Day is around the corner! The Year 5/6 students are very excited and proud to host the event, which is held to raise funds for their graduation. The Market Day will be held during school hours on Wednesday 4th September with students (and teachers) invited to attend Market Day during allocated session times in their year level groups. There will be a wide variety of games and activities for students to participate in, from throwing water balloons at Year 6 students, to digging in the sandpit to find prizes! Advertising and posters will be printed and collated outside the hall for students from Foundation – Year 6 to plan the Market Stalls they would like to attend on the day! Year 5/6 students will also be making visits to classrooms across the school to present the various goods, services and games available on the Market Day. As there is no money handling at the stalls, tokens will be used to redeem all available goods and services. Tokens will be able to be purchased before the Market Day, to allow for students to get straight into games and activities.

Tokens can be purchased in the Courtyard on the following dates and times: Monday 2

nd September: 8.45-9am and 3.30-3.45pm

Tuesday 3rd

September: 8.45-9am and 3.30-3.45pm

Wednesday 4th

September (day of): 8.45-9am

And during your student’s class allocated time!

Tokens are worth $1 each and there is no limit to the amount purchased e.g. If you purchased $10 worth of tokens you will receive 10 tokens. Prices range from $1 (1 token) to $5 (5 tokens) depending on the item, but many stalls are offering value for money packages as well!

All tokens purchased are considered a donation to the school and Year 5/6 community and therefore, all tokens that are left unused by your student will be non-refundable. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Year 6 Level Leader Steph Koble at [email protected]
