Catholic Identity Last Thursday the 19th of March we celebrated St Joseph’s Day.

In Joseph’s life as husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus and

as a tradesman in his local community, Joseph exemplified the

virtues of trust, faith and love. Although the Scriptures give us

little detail about St Joseph, references to his listening,

protective, patient nature and his strength and courage portray a

devoted and compassionate man. He is Patron of the Catholic

church, fathers and workers. Joseph was Mary MacKillop’s

special patron, to whom she prayed often and fervently.

Unfortunately due to the current circumstances we did not have

our St Joseph’s Day Liturgy, however during morning prayer each

class had their own St Joseph’s Day Liturgy in their classrooms.

Annunciation of the Lord- Wednesday 25th March The Feast of the Annunciation is the reason why we celebrate

Christmas on December 25. Christmas comes exactly nine

months after the Archangel Gabriel invited the Virgin Mary to be

the Mother of God, an event we commemorate on March 25.

It is fruitful to reflect upon the incarnation of Jesus Christ in the

womb of the Virgin Mary as the antecedent to the explosion of

joy, caroling, gift giving, eating, drinking, love and family unity

that surrounds the birth of the Savior. Classes reflected on this

special day through prayer within their classes, short films and

activities.

Lent- Project Compassion A reminder that we are continuing to raise money for Project

Compassion during this time of Lent. This Friday the 27th of

March we will have a casual clothes day raising money for

Project Compassion. Gold coin donation please.

‘Shake & Take’ As our St Joseph’s Day Liturgy was cancelled, we had a very small

and revised version of our cherished ‘Shake & Take’ welcoming

ceremony. In this worrying and strange time, we thought it was

important to try and keep alive this beloved tradition. The

ceremony was held outside where we could abide by the social

distancing and correct hygiene practices. Please view photos on

our Facebook page.

Key Capabilities 2 As mentioned in the last Newsletter, the Key Capabilities continua

are being highlighted across all curriculum areas this year.

Teachers are assisting students in their classes with reflecting on,

planning for and showing evidence of the 7 Capabilities.

An obvious link between the Capability: Spiritually Aware and

Inspired by Faith is in the area of Religious Education. Year 7

classes have been learning more about Catholic Social Teaching

principles in recent weeks and students have identified that their

tasks are about ‘contributing with others to a more just and

loving world’.

In the current state of uncertainty, this has also been evident in

our school community when we are being kind to others and

making loving choices in our support and care for each other.

Tomorrow, with our Casual Clothes Day raising money for Project

Compassion, our donations will help in empowering others to

prioritise action for justice and nonviolence.

As parents of Middle School students will see in their children’s

Learning Journey reflections, students are learning to identify

how their class tasks are connected to the chosen Capability and

how development of this attribute might benefit them outside of

school. This is a process which will evolve throughout the year as

we all become familiar with and adept at referring to the

Continua.

Lower Eyre Peninsula SAPSASA Tennis

The SAPSASA State Tennis Championships were held from Monday 16th to Thursday 19th March in Adelaide. Lower Eyre Peninsula played at Seaside Courts at Henley Beach and Division 4 comprised of five country districts and three city districts. The Lower Eyre Peninsula SAPSASA Tennis Team consisted of five students from St Joseph’s School, four students from Cummins Area School, two from Tumby Bay Area School and one student from Navigator College.

The team performed very well during the week, with the top four districts being very similar in ability and having tight matches. Monday morning saw the LEP team start with a very close match against the undefeated carnival winners, Central Eyre Peninsula. The match was very close, with six sets being tie breakers and CEP winning 10-8 sets. The match against Gawler saw many one sided sets but the final score was tight with LEP winning the match 10-8 sets.

On Tuesday morning a one sided match against the city district, Port, resulted in a 16-2 sets win to LEP. The last match on Tuesday saw a very tight contest with many tie breakers and close matches. Port eventually ran out winners by one game, 9 sets all, 80-79 games.

The remaining matches were all easy wins to Lower Eyre Peninsula, including 15-3 sets against Southern Valley, 11-7 sets against North Eastern and the final match against Murraylands on Thursday morning 16-2 sets.

The winner of the Division 4 competition for the week was Central Eyre Peninsula on 21 points, Barker was second with 19, Lower Eyre Peninsula third on 17 points, followed by Gawler on 15 points. The students played very well, improved during the four day competition and showed excellent sportsmanship.

The week concluded with a Fast 4 mixed doubles program, which enabled fast, interesting results to matches. It gave players a chance to play with a different doubles partner and was a fun end to the four days of competition.

In the current world situation, we were extremely lucky to have played the SAPSASA Tennis event. A huge thank you to the parents and grandparents who travelled to Adelaide and supported the players during the week. The students had a fantastic week and were able to pursue their goals, compete against different players, develop team building skills and co-operation, improve their tennis skills and make new friends.

Congratulations to St Joseph’s School Tennis Participants (left to right): Edward Kutny, Sibeal Hopkins, Hunter Gray, Holly Bates and Sachi Vidov

Japanese Hosting

We are requesting hosts for our Japanese assistant teacher homestay program commencing on April the 24th. Without you we will not be able to make the most of the opportunity to have an assistant teacher in our school to support our students and their study of Japanese. Our assistant’s name is Maho and she is 20 years old. Maho is being hosted by families from Navigator College this term and will be joining our school in term 2. Maho has been in Australia since late January assisting at Navigator College.

This is a great opportunity to get to know our Japanese visitor and have the chance to learn as much from her as she will learn from you. Each person in your family over 18 will require a police check.

If you would like further information please email Sally Izzo [email protected] or phone the school on 8683 2400.

How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment;

we can start now, start slowly changing the world! Anne Frank

Recently, young student leaders gathered from around Australia

and New Zealand to share together what it means to be a

leader in a Josephite school. They were overwhelmed by the

impact of the bushfires and drought within our country, and the

devastation they had caused. Collectively, they decided they

wanted to help heal the land, the creatures and the people.

“The youth of our society are forever told that the future is up

to us, yet we forget that we don’t have to wait for the future”

explained Jarrod Stolz and Wilson McShane, student leaders at

St Joseph’s School, Port Lincoln. “We believe we can make a

difference now.”

From this resolution, the group of student leaders from the 27

Josephite schools united together to kickstart Stormbirds 2020,

an initiative born out of the leadership experience they had at

St Joseph’s Spirituality Centre in Kincumber. In an active

response to the devastation caused by the bushfires across

Australia, they have made a pledge, as Josephite leaders, to

support Good Grief’s Stormbirds program.

Marli Ryan and Marni Clark, student leaders at St Joseph’s

School, Port Lincoln, additionally said that “there’s no need to

wait until we’re old enough”. “Making a difference in our

society isn’t reserved for professionals and authority figures.

Leaving a meaningful mark is up to each and every one of us

right now.”

The Stormbirds program was developed by the Josephite Good

Grief National Office in 2009, following the Black Saturday

bushfires. It aims to help primary and secondary students

understand and respond to the loss and devastation they have

experienced, and develop skills for adapting and recovering

from the disaster. Since January, there have been overwhelming

requests from across Australia for teachers and other

professionals to be trained to offer the Stormbirds program to

their students. Josephite student leaders have united to support

the program in two really practical ways.

“Collectively with the other Josephite schools, we are hoping to

raise about $20,000,” said Dana Hurrell, St Joseph’s School

Captain. “This will assist the Stormbird’s program in helping

Josephite Student Leaders Unite (to support young people suffering the effects of bushfires and drought)

areas of real need.” Cambell Waller, St Joseph’s School Captain,

added that “Many of the schools are also planning to twin with

primary schools across the country. Many of these having

originally been started by the Josephite Sisters, and by twinning

with them, we can offer practical support through letter writing,

sending messages and offering help in other ways.”

Natural disasters can impact in ways and at times we least expect,

sometimes leaving individuals and families feeling vulnerable.

Student leaders hope to assist in making these burdens easier to

bear.

“JJAMM was an incredible opportunity for us to acquire new skills

and knowledge,” agreed the St Joseph’s school leaders. “Through

Stormbirds 2020, we hope to use our voices and do something

practical, following the example of Mary Mackillop and Julian

Woods. It is one clear way we can play our role in making a

difference to the wider community at this time, living out in our

lives, the Josephite charism and our commitment to justice for

all.”
