A Grain Of Sea Saltbetzi abramby

And the bride's father woresneakers! Ah, but this was no hippiewedding, even though the bride andseveral of the wedding guests were intheir stocking feet. It was all in theinterest of saving the decks of the PapaNeui,-the huge catamaran on which thewedding took place.

The bride herself was a dark-eyedlovely whose long silky brown hair, crowned with daisies, streamed over her •cream-colored gown, and whose mistylook confirmed her traditional approachto bridehood - sea-wedding notwithstand-ing - including being late.

The groom, with red-gold . mus-tachios of imposing ferocity, lookedsturdy and unruffled, also in the best oftradition. It was in all a most attractivewedding party, including the ministerwhose red bible even matched theelegant red stitching on his suit pockets— a superb touch of color co-ordinationwhich he laughingly denied any creditfor.

The stately and dignified Papa Nuilent Herself whole-heartedly, as only thetruly elegant can, to the relaxedcelebration of the joyful event. Blue_streamers flew from her stays, a jauntywhite crepe-paper bell hung from thetopping lift over the fore-deck, and Fid, *the resident dog, wore a blue ribbonround his n jck.

Braced against the mast (notbecause of any weakness of resolve, butrather because of the thoughtless wakesof passing boats), the young couple stoodbefore the minister taking their vows inclear, soft voices that echoed gently overthe water to carry them through a lifetimeof love and mutual growth.

The Caloosahatchie sparkled andshimmered in the beneficent sunlightwhile a little angel of a breeze playfullyfanned the ends of the brides's hair andcooled the groom's forehead. Farforward, sitting crosslegged on the deckand clinging to a stanchion, sat thegroom's mother with a broad smile andtears running down her cheeks equal tothose ofthe bride's aunt.

Afterwards, drying her eyes, happily, Auntie said to me, "When Iused to hold-her as a baby, she wouldsmile up at me just like that! Isn't sheBeautiful?" Of course, she was, but Ithought Auntie was too,

After the ceremony, tfue to thePapa Nui's Hawaiian heritage, theCaptain played the Hawaiian WeddingSong on his tape player followed by somelively, foot-tapping Scott Joplin melodies.

The bride even had-a train - but

not the usual kind. It was a train of littleboats, following the Papa Nui out of theYacht Basin with happy waving of thearms and shouted felicitations. One of thebride's co-workers and her husband, bothinvited guests, had elected to follow intheir own power boat and anchored toport for the ceremonies, causing myimagination to take off on a short flight.

This was a small group of 20, butwhat if one wanted to have 200 guests? Inmy mind's eye I saw the Papa Nuianchored like some giant swan surround-ed by hundreds of little power-boats allbobbing on the waves and carryhingguests dressed in bright bathing suitsand colorful shorts. (Hey, Cap'n John, would you like to get married all overagain?) Think of the fun we could havefloating the refreshments around amongthe boats in waterproof containers restingon life preservers. (As you can see, beingpractical is not my strong suit.) Ah, well.

But a wedding on the water ISpractical (if one should even mentionthese two words in the same breath) andif it's on the Papa Nui under the smoothseasmanship of Captains Peri and Al,surrounded by one's loved ones, cheeredon by the faithful Fid and blessed by theAlmighty who made it all possible, therejust isn't a better way that I can think ofto provide an auspicious beginning.

Reel Eel Tips

There has been quite a bit offishing going on around the islands in thepast week. And from what I understand,a lot of fish to feast upon too.

Seems that our visiting friendsare having a good time catching our localsheepshead. This fish is easily identifiedby its chunky body with contrastinglight and dark vertical bars. Sheepsheadare caught year-round usually, bypilings, and bridges. For instance theSanibel-Captiva fishing pier, the SanibelCauseway, Blind Pass bridge and any ofthe smaller bridges located within thesaltwater canals. The best method forcatching these fish is still fishing with"educated" shrimp. In case you do catcha sheepshead and are wondering what todo with it I suggest steaming it. Firstfillet and skin your catch. Gather up (2)green onions with tops and all, choppedfine, 'A pound of fresh mushrooms, sliced and (1) tablespoon of soy sauce.Mix those three ingredients together.Place (1) pound of fish fillets in a basin, cover with the vegetables and (2)tablespoons of peanut oil. Place in asteamer, cover tightly and steam for 15

minutes. Season with (4) drops of pepperand salt to taste. This will serve a familyof four.

Now for some information onother fishing news. I hear there aretrout being taken in the surf off ofBowmen's Beach using mirror lures, small trout and live "educated" shrimp.Snook are being caught in the lateevening off the center span of theSanibel Causeway, casting out along thepilings, using mirror lures, spoons withyellow feathers and jumbo shrimp on thesurface. I have come upon several snookrecipes and would like to share one ofthem with you. It's called "Johns PassSnook". Place (2) pounds of snook filletsinto a buttered baking dish, mixtogether (IV2) cups sour cream, (V2) cupmayonnaise, (2) tablespoons choppedchives, (1/8) cup lemon juice, ('/»)teaspoon salt and (1/8) teaspoon pepper.Spread mixture over fish and bake at 375degrees F. for 30 minutes and serve tofour people.

I hope I've helped you catch somefish and how to cook them too.

Happy New Year.

...ABOUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY

The Medicare hospital insurancedeductible will be $92., starting January1, 1975, according to Tom Camps, socialsecurity district manager in Fort Myers.

"A Medicare patient who goes into ahospital and starts a benefit period afterDecember 31 will be responsible for thefirst $92. of the hospital bill," Campssaid.

The 1974 deductible was $84. Underthe Medicare law, the amount willincrease to keep it in line with theaverage cost of one day's stay in ahospital.

The increase to $92. for 1975 is aresult of a review of hospital costs during1973. However, the present $84.deductible remains in effect throughoutany benefit period started in 1974, even ifthe period of hospitalization goes into1975.

Under the law, the increase in thedeductible means there also will beincreases starting January 1 in threeother amounts Medicare patients pay forcovered care.

For a hospital stay of over 60 days, the patient will pay $23. a day (up from$21.) for covered services furnished onthe 61st through the 90th day.

For a post-hospital stay of over 20days in a skilled nursing facility, thepatient will pay $11.50 a day (up from$10.50) for the 21st through, the 100thday. .

For reserve days used - after 90 daysof hospital care in a benefit period - thepatient will pay $46. a day (up from $42.).

Medicare hospital insurance helpspay for hospital stays and certainpost-hospital care of people 65 and over, disabled people under 65 who have beenentitled to social security disabilitybenefits for 24 consecutive months ormore, and many people who have chronickidney disease and need dialysis or atransplant.

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUNGSTERSON BIKES

Children riding their newChristmas toys on residential roadwaysincreases driving danger warned theFlorida Highway Patrol today.

Last year in Florida there were172 children under the age of 10 yearskilled in traffic accidents. Of thatnumber, 81 were pedestrians and 17were riding bicycles and tricycles.

Colonel Eldrige Beach, director ofthe Patrol said, "Parents should teachchildren to ride their new Christmasbicycle or tricycle away from streets orhighways which will reduce the chanceof an accident while they learn."

Young riders should understandthe dangers of riding bicycles alongroadways in today's traffic and should betaught to ride on the right side of theroad as near the edge as possible. Earlytraining may form habits that will helpyoungsters to respect the need for rulesand regulations that will carry into lateryears as automobile drivers.

Colonel Beach concluded bysaying, "Responsibility for the safety ofa child in the street must be shared byhis parents as well as the motorist. Apublic street should never be used as aplayground,"

WHAT COLOR IS AN OYSTER?

What color is an oyster? Well, thatdepends on the specie, the watertemperature and alinity, the location, thefood available to the oyster and whetherthe oyster was feeding heavily whenharvested. And, that is just nature'sdoing. In the orient and in some parts ofEurope oysters are brightly colored withfood dyes for festive use.

Generally in The SoutheasternUnited States bur oysters run from a kindof pearly white through shades of grayand beige.

Oysters feed by pumping waterthrough their gills and filtering outminute algae. If the oyster was feedingheavily when harvested, it will be fat andtasty and may have a green color in itsgills. The green is just a little harmlessgreen algae in the gills which someconnoisseurs consider to be a sign of afine oyster.

Of course, the green should beconfined to the gills. On the other hand, the oyster may be light pink in color - allover. The coloring agent in this case is aharmless bacteria that is sometimes moreconcentrated in the water than usual.

Harmon Shields, executive direct-or of the Florida ©ept., of NaturalResources, advises that oysters may onlybe taken from waters approved by theFlorida Division of Health. Shields saysoysters purchase from reputable seafooddealers have come from clean waters, have been processed under closeregulation and are safe as well asdelectable.

If you want to harvest your ownoysters, do so only in waters approved forshell fish harvesting. If you are not sureabout your bay, call the local office of theDept. of Natural Resources MarinePatrol.
