Thought for the Day Welcome to School Year 2013!Welcome to School Year 2013! Teacher Spotlight“Don’t waste this golden 1me with your child by worrying and feeling anxious. How do you feel when you worry about le<ng go? Does it make you happy? It is not a wise ins1nct to follow because it makes the child weak. This one-‐off opportunity in your life should be joyful.’’Venerable Ajahn Jayasaro speaking at Panyaden School, May 2013
Student Spotlight Alex (Alexander Lidster) is one of our new K3 friends who comes from England and Thailand. We caught up with him at lunch 1me when he was busy running around with friends. Alex loves learning at Panyaden school with his teachers Kru Sean and Kru Noon. He told us he likes every class from Maths to Art, but that swimming in PE was his favourite 1me of day.
In his free 1me Alex loves playing Spiderman. He told us he likes Spiderman because he is good and he makes webs to catch the people who do bad things. He also said, “Spiderman swings on a web, and I like swinging a lot.”
He enjoys the food in Thailand and England, but he would rather eat apples than anything else. He said he would like to be a soldier when he grows up because they help people. But now, he had to get back to playing with a whole group of new friends who were wai1ng to play with him. Spiderman is in demand!
We wish a very warm welcome to new and returning parents! Returning parents will no1ce a few changes this year. We have improved the way we organise Thai and English language classes so that students are with their own age group but separated by ability, with extra teachers coming in for support. We have lengthened study periods in Prathomsuksa to give more 1me for in-‐depth study and shortened periods for kindergarten to keep learning dynamic. We are looking forward to an exci1ng term. I hope your children enjoy it!

‘A ship is safest in its harbour, but that’s not what a ship is made for’ is one of Kru Timber’s favourite sayings. “I love teaching because every day is a challenge, for yourself and your students. Children are different and they learn in different ways. This pushes me to find different ways to teach.’’ Kru Timber, a teacher for 19 years, joined Panyaden in April. ‘’I like the family atmosphere here and the mix of children from all over the world. It teaches us that we have to cooperate, compromise and adapt to get along together.’’ A US na1onal who loves to cycle, Kru Timber’s ambi1on for his P5-‐6 students is for them to be able to set aside distrac1ons and give full focus to a task, to make the best use of their studying 1me possible. ‘’It’s not about finishing first, but about using 1me wisely.’’
12 Wise HabitsThe Kung Fu Chef has grown old! He has handed over his teaching du1es to 12 wise habit masters.

Mindfulness“The best inven1on in the world is the mind of a child.” -‐ Thomas EdisonTo keep our children’s minds working to their fullest poten1al, at Panyaden we prac1ce medita1on and mindfulness. Throughout the year we will be running ac1vi1es that help students develop those wisest of wise habits, samadhi (being calm and focused) and sa1 (being mindful and alert).
P1-‐3 classes worked in teams in silence using blocks to match shapes, then to remember a series of 12 animals in the correct order.
P4-‐6 took a 1-‐minute maths test while our maths teachers con1nually interrupted them! They then retook the same test without interrup1ons and were able to see for themselves how they can concentrate beder without distrac1on. They also observed their own taste sensa1ons by slowly…. silently…. ea1ng dried bananas!

Our sessions end with a short silent medita1on, eyes closed, observing the breath. It can be a struggle for some at the start, but adding just 30 seconds without the mind wandering is quite an achievement!
