HISTORY OF THOMAS JOHN BATA

He was born in Prague and educated in Czechoslovakia England and Switzerland.

His father Tomas was the founder of the shoe organization in 1894.

He joined the Regiment during the second world war and served as a captain in a Canadian reserve army and honorary colonel from 1899 to 1907.

FAMILY BACKGROUND Mr. Bata is survived by his family which comprises of his

wife Sonja and son Thomas . He has 3 daughters Christine, Monica, Rosemarie their

spouses and grandchildren. His father was killed in Plane crash when Thomas was 17.

HISTORY OF ORGANIZATION Bata Ltd. is a privately owned global shoe manufacturer and

retailer headquartered in Ontario. Bata Canada, based in Toronto, serves the Canadian market

with 250 stores. Based in Paris, Bata Europe serves the European market with 500 stores. With supervision located in Singapore, Bata International boasts 3,000 stores to serve markets in Africa, the Pacific, and Asia. Finally, Bata Latin America, operating out of Mexico City, sells footwear throughout Latin America.

CHRONOLOGY

1939: The company relocates to Canada after the movement of German military forces into Eastern Europe.

1945: Czechoslovakia business operations are nationalized by the new communist government following World War II.

1991: Bata returns to the Czech Republic following fall of the

communist regime. 1994: Thomas J. Bata, the son of the company's founder,

retires.

2001: Thomas J. Bata, Jr., becomes chairman and CEO.

EXPANSION STRATEGY

In the 1970s and 1980s, the manufacture of shoes began to shift increasingly to Pacific Rim countries.

1900, Bata moved the operation to a new building located close to Zlin's railway station and took the first major step in industrialization, installing steam-driven machines.

Mr. Bata wanted to be remembered as a servant .

So his Business card stated “ Senior shoe Salesman”

Customer satisfaction was his main objective.

Not only profit , but social as well as economic welfare of people was his aim.

His company was not only a source of private wealth, but a Public trust as well.

He was the chairman of Bata shoe organization. He was a former Director of Canadian Pacific Airlines and IBM

Canada. In 2007 he received The Lifetime Achievement award in U.K.

BATA TODAY In today's world, Bata continues to serve its customer

throughout the world. Bata today serves 1 million customers per day. It operates 5,000 retail stores. Employees more than 40,000 people. Runs 40 production facilities across 25 countries.

BATA IN INDIA Bata Industrials in India was created to offer globally

renowned industrial footwear to its customers.

Bata Industries sell around 45 million pairs of footwear and serves 1,20,000 customers everyday through 1200 retail stores.
